This helicopter was originally designed by Howard Hughes (300 + 500) he spent a lot of thought on crash survivability. Collapsible landing gear is a big one and notice the pilot position to the rotor hub. When there is a hard landing, like there is here, the blades don't flex down and chop into the crew. (Bell, Robinson, Sikorsky, et al.)

@@bigal3940 Dennis hurt nobody. He had one crash in four decades of flying aerobatics, because he didn't allow for the changes in air density on that high-altitude airfield. One crash and that's enough for people to come on here and talk utter rubbish about him. He walked away from this and died aged 88 from natural causes, and yet people have spent the last 14 years saying he was an incompetent idiot. The worst offenders in my view are pilots - I suppose we should expect armchair arseholes who don't know the first thing about aviation to write stupid comments, like the bold pilot quote (I wish I had a pound for every time someone has quoted that here) but when pilots accuse him of incompetence it does make me cross. I knew Dennis. He was a kind, unassuming man who had more talent as a heli pilot in his little finger than most have in their whole body. Being disrespectful to him simply because you couldn't be bothered to find out who he is, what he achieved in his life and exactly why it went wrong on this specific occasion is plain lazy. I work at that airport, the pilot who was performing was a British pilot and crashed because he wasn't used to the lack of performance in the engine of this heli when flying at a much higher elevation. that is why he crashed. +Peter Schmidt If Dieter was using a petrol engined (instead of electric) heli, his performance would have suffered since the air is considerably thinner (less oxygen and less bite from the rotor) at this elevation, just as +james bridge stated above.
@peterschmidt65718 жыл бұрын
Racer Dieter Schlüter was always using methanol/gas powered helis.
@racer7748 жыл бұрын
Peter Schmidt - With all due respect, unless Dieter used Nitromethane in place of any of his 'regular' fuels while at the elevation of the airpark in this video, he would have had to perform his aerobatics at a higher than normal altitude as well. I agree with you as far as having a safety net in-as-far as plenty of altitude. Bottom line, the air is much thinner so the rotor blades bite less and normally aspirated, fuel burning engines produce less power. Using Nitromethane would help circumvent the power loss since it contains it's own oxygen. Dieter has likely used this fuel many times but for everyday use, it is impractical unless you have unlimited funds and parts. IF you are a bit unfamiliar with it, kindly refer to these links. www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/hrdp-1304-what-is-nitromethane-anyway/ AND as you can see by comparison, costs roughly twice what methanol does. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00655PVAI?*Version*=1&*entries*=0 Good day and I hope you and Dieter have many more good days of flying. So much wrong here. Blade stall, over-pitching, loop close to the deck, and pressure altitude. But mainly, what was he thinking? " I'm going to see if I can trash this helicopter". Mission accomplished.

Yeah the loop was a little low, but that's what he does. The real problem here was his failure to account for the density altitude.

i have never ever liked helicopters. as i heard on a program once: "planes seem to glide and cooperate with the laws of physics, whereas helicopters beat them into submission" Helicopters have always been too unstable for my liking.
@DarronMoe4 жыл бұрын
Nothing I see violates nor beats ANY single law of physics into “submit” as gravity, the law, just brutally smashed and grabbed his soul directly into the larger body (EARTH)
@GediSpock4 жыл бұрын
Inherently unstable.
@TheBeingReal4 жыл бұрын
GediSpock So is any high performance plane. In fact, it too stable they are not flyable.
@TheBeingReal4 жыл бұрын
GenXCypher I’ve heard that before. Just BS from uninformed people. Just what makes them “too unstable”? Rotor blades are wings. Provide lift. Helicopters can glide as well: autorotation.
@darioinfini4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBeingReal You let go of the controls of any properly designed and balanced airplane and it will find its stable flying posture. You let go of the controls of one of these things and it will destroy itself and you. An airplane is like a car -- you steer it where you want it to go. A helicopter is like an unruly child that constantly needs to be corrected. You ever watch a helicopter pilot's hand when he's hovering? That's all you need to know right there.

To those who say we should lighten up with the dumb pilot remarks I can only say this. This man is a highly skilled flyer with A1 safety record.
