"Mom, make Carl sing" - Brian. Good thing mom did because Carl was an incredible singer as well as guitar player. Also sweet, kind, handsome - and the balancing force who tried to keep harmony within the group. The band combined the vocal harmonies of the Four Freshman with the guitar stylings of Chuck Berry and those early recordings reflected that merger of influences to create their own sound. He was the most stable of the Wilson brothers, but it's all relative. Carl was not always stable. He battled addictions to heroin, cocaine, alcohol and tobacco (which eventually killed him at the age of 51). He also experimented with LSD and was a regular pot smoker. Like Brian, Carl had weight issues, and (at least according to Mike Love) he suffered from depression and occasionally experienced hallucinations, similar to Brian's although not as severe. Most of this occurred during the 1960s and 1970s, and not during the 1980s, when things were going well for Carl and he seemed to have everything together. Unfortunately, he relapsed in some ways in the 1990s when he was faced with wresting Brian from the grip of Dr. Landy, and during his final illness.

@@mrsmacca126 what does that have to do with anything. I was being a little dismissive Carl Wilson was a fantastic singer and had a handful of moments of brilliance as a composer that do set him aside from the vast majority of people who attempt the songwriting form, but compared to Brian Wilson he's hardly a person of note. Yes Carl's singing ability was greater than Brian's by a significant margin. His voice wasn't always more pleasing to listen to however. I mean just compare Brian's lead vocal on Surf's up from 1967 to Carl's from '71. I think everyone is aligned on this unless you have some predisposed bias towards Carl. Aside from that Brian stands out, to this day, as one of the most original and inventive pop composer/arranger/producers of all time. Carl doesn't come close at all. not sure what's controversial about this, or what my age has to do with any of it. Nor do I understand how you assume you know what generation I belong to. Frankly I perceive it as a kind of doxing threat.

You can see Brian's pain when talking about Carl being gone. Fitting that Brian let Carl sing their most beautiful song. Carl saved Brian's life.

Interesting interview. It's incredible how much Carl gets out of such shallow questions.

What a kind, humble, beautiful person inside and out, Carl was. Amazing voice and musician too! Discovering The Beach Boys and their music all over again has been a source of great comfort to me during this difficult time, thank goodness there is so much archive material saved!

He said that the integrity of Brian's work was complete. Carl had equal integrity. He never projected himself as a guitarist; he only focused on making his brother's songs sparkle.

I think all the Wilson's boys and Al had integrity and humbling, they all believed in Brian..

My fave Beach Boy. Carl had such a beautiful disposition. Didn’t go all in on Murray and his abuse, instead letting us decide for ourselves because even though we think we knew the extent, we will never. His voice is so beautiful and his love for his family is immense. I love his sweet face and he’ll be forever missed.
