How would I go about improving my wrist strength so I am able to push the ball out farther, because I normally use my elbows for power.
@DennisJacksonvts4 жыл бұрын
Practice setting a heavy ball to a wall. Or do rapid fire setting drills to a wall. Set for 30 seconds. Rest for 30 and repeat the sequence for 5 or 10 minutes.

Seems like fingertip push-ups would be really good for that too. My basketball coach in high school always made us do those to increase our ball control.

I know that this video was a while ago, but thanks for the info.. my daughter is the best setter in her middle school conference but many on other teams are complaining that she carries (she's played beach vball too) and we're trying to increase her wrist strength so she can't be accused anymore as she does use elbows
@bunchofoxes3 ай бұрын
While stronger wrists are always a plus- you're not getting rid of elbows completely- you just extend them as you approach the ball instead of after contact- so power doesn't change just timing. (If you don't believe consider how a Barbie doll would get her hands up-no elbows- but you get your hands up by bending then extending your elbows)

Great video. I wanted to ask you if you can show me any drills for bending only the wrists while setting because I have the bad habit of pushing the ball with elbows and I can’t seem to change it.
@DennisJacksonvts5 жыл бұрын
Set to a wall. Start by standing at the wall with the hands really high. Practice dribbling the ball on the wall. There isn't much elbow bend. If there's any bend, the elbow bend is basically like an overhead throw in soccer. This is the setting technique for setting high level indoor 6 on 6 volleyball. Beach doubles is where the elbows bend and the ball comes down in front of the face. For indoor sixes, the elbow bend is more like an overhead soccer throw (the ball stays up high). To prevent the elbows from bending, focus on taking the ball in when the elbows are extended. Keep the elbows extended the best you can as you use the hands and fingers to fire the ball fast. Practice dribble the ball against a wall in this way. Also, have a partner toss a ball high to you and use this technique to set the ball back to them. Also, you can practice wall dribbling a weighted ball to help strengthen the wrists.

@@DennisJacksonvts Will we lose more setting power if we didn't bend the elbow? Like the setting distance is decreased, thanks!
@DennisJacksonvts4 жыл бұрын
@@Josh-ep8qdIf setting distance decreases, I would focus on speeding up the hands. To speed up the hands, focus on the hands and not the elbows. When thinking about training to get the hands faster, I think about the concept of neural adaptations for strength training. This is basically training in a way that focuses on improving motor neuron pathways that enhance an athlete's brain-body coordination during functional movements. The “neural adaptations” athletes undergo in training refers to the brain's ability to recruit muscles to contract and produce a particular movement. I think wall setting drills where you focus on getting the ball in and out of the hands as fast as you can is a great way to train this.

EDIT: The song is: Universal - Vibe Tracks Also, my tip is: if you do close-range or mid-range sets, you don't really need the rest of your body to generate power. For long-range sets, however, I suggest using especially your legs as well.

do you have any tips on how to release the ball faster? and with less spin.
@DennisJacksonvts3 жыл бұрын
Rapid fire wall setting drills. You basically dribble the ball against the wall really fast using the setting motion. Also, use a weighted ball. Take the ball high and keep it high the entire time during the drill. This will force you to use your hands and wrists and not bending at the elbows. Also, focus on pre and post contact position to be the shape of the ball. This is the secret to the wall setting drills being so effect. This drill forces you to maintain the "shape of the ball" position.

I'm interested in any advice on how to change my deep dish beach hands into quicker ones for indoor. I notice that setters from the same country have vastly different speeds (Micha Christenson v Kawika Shoji/Luciano De Cecco v Nicolás Uriarte), is there a way for me to learn to set the ball with the speed and power of De Cecco? I imagine that strengthening up the wrists is a good place to start and have been setting a 3kg medicine ball after training a few times a week, and while I seem to improve, im still a long way from being able to backset a ball across the court. Is there anymore detailed instructions besides try to make the hands faster? Tia

Hi quick question, i looked at your online courses on your website and im not sure where im getting the power to set the ball to the hitters. You say elbows should not be bent so I can’t generate power from there and then you say my hands should shape the ball at all times so I can’t get energy from there either because im not moving my wrist? Im just really confused, do you mind helping me out ? Im trying to change my setting technique because I can’t seem to get good contact on the ball with the setting technique I learned from coach donny. Thank you!
@DennisJacksonvts2 жыл бұрын
To set the ball faster, I would focus on not bending the elbows. Find a wall and do continuous setting to the wall. These are rapid fire drills where you are just using your fingers, hands, and bending at the wrists. Basically, dribble the ball on the wall as fast as you can. Be positioned about 6 inches from the wall. Maintain this position for 30 seconds. Do 30 seconds then rest for 15. You can increase the weight of the ball to make in more challenging. Just 5 minutes a day will go a long way. Also, be sure to get all fingers on the ball. And heavier ball will force you to use good technique when setting to a wall.

Focus on the starting hand position (the position before making the contact). Set to yourself or to a wall and focus on what fingers are contacting the ball. If one hand is contacting the ball more than the other, then your start position is incorrect.

In indoor volleyball, does it matter if the ball is spinning out of a set?

Generally for indoor volleyball, ball handling isn't called as tight as beach volleyball. It also depends on the organization, age level, etc. For indoor, the referee may call a double contact or caught/thrown ball.

Practice setting the ball fast. If you have a wall available, do rapid fire setting drills to the wall. Keep the hands high and focus on making contact with all fingers. @DennisJacksonvts4 жыл бұрын
William Pusta Maybe set the ball higher so it doesn't get there so fast? Really though, if the hitter knows what set is coming then it's their responsibility to prepare for it. Now, if your sets are inconsistent, then it can be tough to hit. So, consistency is something you would need to work on. But if your sets are consistent and this is how your coach wants you to set, then the focus needs to be more on the hitter improving.
