It's strange, I've heard the opposite. I've always heard that Denon is brighter, clearer and as such a bit more fatiguing compared to Marantz's more warm and musical sound signature, as close to tubes with getting tubes.

I went through many AV receivers in the past few months from: Denon, pioneer back to Denon to the Marantz 6013, which I took back for one problem but they stopped selling it so I went with the Denon 6500h. It's just driving my wife crazy! Although I really like the Denon avr x-6500h; I think this too will be going back; just doesn't have the music sound quality that I seen the Marantz had. Although I'm more or a movie buff, I really loved the music quality of the Marantz and feel the SR8012 will give me the best of both worlds since they are extremely similar on all fronts, I strongly feel it will also give me that music quality that I'm looking for while not sacrificing my movie sound that my Denon AVR -X6500H is currently giving me.

Absolutely true! ... Once you are able to compare music using Denon and Marantz, you will suddenly realize the differences. Denon is tilted toward movies and does a decent job with music, but Marantz is tuned for accurate warm music reproduction (by way of hardware differences, ie. HDAMs, and other components) but also does equally well with movies. (Even better once you begin to appreciate accuracy). Be careful with reviews. People who don't hear the differences either don't have revealing enough speakers, don't use quality sources, don't know how to set it up properly, or simply haven't learned to 'hear' yet.

Same parent company so it's no surprise that the hardware is so similar. I bought marantz because I liked the sound slightly more and the slimline unit fit my room better. Denon had more power but mmm I loved the music on marantz.

I chose a Marantz SR4300 over Denon over a decade ago because the Marantz better suited my overall needs. The Denon sounded better in AV mode but the Marantz was way better for music. I remember the guy demoing the amps got annoyed when I took out a small stack of CDs to test the systems music playing abilities before the surround sound capabilities. I knew that the amp would be primarily used for music and TV viewing. At the time stereo sound was in its infancy for TV broadcast let alone surround sound which is the norm nowadays.

Hey Kpaceguy, Just got the Denon DRA-800H AV Receiver. I'm using it as the centerpiece of my Basement Studio - created during the Stay At Home COVID pandemic. I have not compared a comparable Marrantz , but did compare it to a Yamaha RN303..... The Denon gives so much more. Would have been nice to compare it to the Yamaha RN 602(?) , but it is out of stock. I have the Denon connected to various stereo components and 2 pairs of Bookshelf speakers: 1 pair of Fluance Signature Reference series and 1 pair of Elac Debut 6.2 . The Denon DOES deliver musical, Clear sound. Just enough subtle adjustments seem just right. The Denon has a Phono preamp, and lots of HDMI connections, as well as a digital cable inputs. I have my Tascam CD recorder unit connected in that manner [digital out toslink cable to Denon's digital inpout]; there IS a difference in the sound from the Tascam CD player compared to the RCA CD input connection. One comment about HEOS .... Man, this is not user friendly. I do not have the Denon connected to a monitor or TV, so following the setup prompts on the Receiver's Screen with the remote control is Challenging. You need to download the full operations manual (Denon / Marrantz saves paper that way ). It is multi- functional , in that, with Network Radio and BT offers ability to listen to Music Streaming services via Airplay , Amazon's Alexa , or via your smartphone with BT. It did recognize my home Wifi quickly and hassle free. I am very happy with Clear Crisp sound that is delivered - it's not over seasoned with too much bass or treble. Of course, the sound delivered by any Receiver is 75 to 80% reliant on your Speakers.... I'm enjoying this Denon Receiver and would highly recommend it.

Depends which model. The 8500 denon is upspeced components wise and gives Marantz a run for its money. Lower down the range I would agree however.

I think the sound of either brand depends on what speaker and connectors you hook them up with. A warmer or more aggressive amplifier/receiver should go with a smoother set of speakers. On the other hand a smoother amplifier should benefit of a warmer set of speakers with deeper bass to balance the sound.

I got my first AVR 3 months ago. I went for the Marantz 1609 slimline silver model because it was small and because I wanted to partner it with the Wharfdale DX 2 5.1 speaker package in white. I used a two-channel 45W Arcam amp previously and was completely satisfied with the fast agile sound and stereo imaging. The Marantz is superb for movie decoding but for music, it is complete crap. There is no stereo imaging when in stereo mode and the sound feels muffled with a lack of highs and unexciting LFE bass. The multi-channel mode is what sounds ok for music but even then with all speakers playing it's not the same as a stereo amp. I ended up overdriving 2 speakers in the stereo mode because they sounded dull and lifeless and now need to get them repaired. The Marantz is 90W a channel at 4 ohms and the Wharfdale speakers are rated at 25-100W at 4 ohms so how did I end up overdriving them? pissed off $$$. Also, does anyone get a second of skipped sound every so often from Marantz or any AVR?

I have to decide the same and I`m almost sure that I`ll go for the Marantz, mainly because of the Pre-Amp-Outputs and the warmer/darker sound it should have after some reviews I`ve read. With those Pre-Outs it`s possible to upgrade the system later with a power amp like the Parasound Zonemaster 2350.

I have both the Marantz SR8015 and the Denon AVR X8500HA. The Denon can hit better on home theater (movies), but the Marantz is such a musical receiver enhances the home theater experience. The 8500HA is an amazing receiver if you know how to how to tweak it for home theater. The bottom line I like both because they offer the home theater fans a lot in terms of performance for movies & music. So, either one would be great choice for home theater applications.

Now i upgraded to a Denon avr x2400h .The 2400 is really great avr i must say it is from 2017 series i baught it new for 327 Euro. For that money i have a great 7.2 avr wich performs very well.My best Friend has a Marantz 7012 this thing is superb i must say it has 9 channels and so on but is it sounding better ?I dont know?It sounds different.I think it is more a question of taste.I dont want to say it sounds bad it sounds very good......but different as the Denon. For me who has not always the most money the Denon is a absolute great value for the money.Same goes for my speakers Jamo S 628 HCS 5.0 great performance fore the money and fits perfekt with the avr. Same goes for the Projector Epson 4040 not the newest and greatest but baught it for 1445 and it makes a great big Picture it is a 2016 modell baught it new cheap.Bang for your bug .

It is all personal preference. If a sample of people were to go and have their ears tested, one would find that each person would have different sensitivities to different frequencies. As such, they may tweak their stereo systems to their own personal tastes based on the frequencies that bring more pleasure their ears. I would think anyone investing the kind of money in these higher end systems would be taking the time to tweak things to their own tastes, regardless of the "out of box" sound they get. There is, however, something to tuning to a more neutral (flat) sound as a baseline with which to start. To me the more important question, which is the better value? When comparing the Marantz SR6015 to the Denon AVR-X3015H, I see the 3015 being a better overall value, since there is a significant price difference but not what I would call a significant feature difference. I do like the look of the Marantz, as it has a less traditional receiver look, whereas the Denon looks pretty much like any other receiver; however, I am not certain that is enough distinction to justify $500 more in price.

This is like comparing Chevy to Ford. The great thing is, both differ enough to offer what different tastes prefer. I prefer the Marantz for music, but a couple of friends have the Denons. And those Denons sound great for how they crank rock-n-roll in your face. But on my Marantz, I don't get the fatigue from listening to any kind of music, regardless of hard rock, jazz, country etc., no matter how long the listening intervals are.

I do agree about what you say on minute 3:58. I do want also an AVR that could be able to do music and movies with the same quality. In my case with my Denon AVR 1611 is not the case. This Denon do better for movies than music. Also in music does it better depending on the source. For example, you may expect better sound from CDs that KZbin content, but KZbin sounds better.

Im using marantz sr6012 avr. I wanted a 9 or 11ch avr with audessey xt32 and at the time the sr6012 was the cheapest option. I hope to be able to keep it until I'm ready to go separates :D also reason i got it was because both music and movies are very important to me and i wanted a balanced system. I just got two Marantz rcvrs. I used to have one back in the day but ended up with Pioneer receivers. One of the Marantz is the same as my old school 14 year old model that I let go so now I have that model back. It's a beast and sounds great. I could not resist the deal of $100. I also purchased a new model. It's going to be fun to compare the Pioneer Elite model to an old and new Marantz. Out of the box with no calibration I like the Marantz already. But the Pioneer has served me well but it needs calibration to sound good. I would even say that it sounds awful with it turned off. You mentioned classical music. I was forced to listen to and learn that type of music as a kid. I am starting to get back into it. It can push a stereo system for sure because the the wider dynamic range. I also listen to jazz, r&b, dance music, caribbean music, latin music and rock.

Marantz has a flatter sound than any of the big 3 manufacturers. That being Yamaha denon and pioneer. I just like the sound that much more enough to go back to the marantz after years of listening to everyone else

given my track history of unreliable Denon AV receivers... I'm switching to Marantz and hope that they are not too closely related in that regard. By the way... you didn't end the discussion at all. I now have my Marantz SR8012 which runs pretty cool with 5.1 channels, It's a monster for movies and a gymnast for music. It has a significantly better sound presentation than any Denon AVR I've owned including the 7200WA. The Marantz is an impresive Hi-Fi AVR, the Denon isn't.

I thought that I responded to this ... Maybe I didn't so here goes. I saw a vid with some Sound United engineers discussing the difference. These guys should know since they now build both. When it comes to the video section of the rcvrs, they use the same parts and engineering. However for the audio sections, different teams build and design the audio sections. The Denon team goes for the Denon sound which is bright and detailed. The Marantz team goes for the traditional Marantz sound which is warm and musical. This is good news for fans of both brands. The engineers stated that on the mid and high end models Marantz gets pricier parts. That explains why they cost more. I have always considered Marantz to be one of the best rcvr brands for those looking to use their rcvr for both music and movies.

So many people are confused about what "warm" actually means. Its basically a roll off at the highs en the low end. Sometimes even a slight bump around the 200hz range. Marantz are mostly warm sounding as do Denon's but less pronounced. If you want flat and accurate go for yamaha or pioneer. Or a decent poweramp. Hifi is almost never truly flat to begin with. Thats where monitor or reference equipment comes in 😉

@FullFledged2010 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kpaceguy Well "real" is kind of subjective here. If you're talking about accurate sound than you should aim for flat. Monitor or reference speakers are made to represent the most accurate true to life (some might call it real) sound. And they have a extremely flat response. Most hifi systems are made to sound pleasing and not necessarily "real" . Anything that colors the sound is artificial 🤷‍♂ Than again there are so many things in music that influence the sound of a final recording. Audiophiles spend thousands of dollars on cables while the artist might have used a basic mic cable to record it. And don't get me started on compressors and processing. So a recording is hardly ever true to life 🤷‍♂ In electronic music its even worse 😅

I realize this is a direct comparison BUT why not just buy a Parasound product. Dollar for dollar the easiest to obtain and enjoy the most. I’m more interested in the music aspect of this discussion but if I needed home theater help I’d still take the parasound route for the same reasons. When you pay a little more for the Parasound you will have something of value that others are seeking. Build quality style and design are all superior and really it’s just not that much of an expense particularly for those who seek a higher end sound and product. You will never be stuck with an expensive door stop. Just for the record the vintage Marantz is an excellent product that I enjoy greatly but that’s not part of this discussion.

Kpaceguy. I think you nailed it. Marantz receivers use a specially developed circuit in their preamp section called HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module). According to them, they outperform standard preamp circuits and give their receivers a more musical, pure and dynamic sound. While they are now both under the same ownership, Denon receivers do not feature this circuitry. I also think you're right about the target audiences- Denon receivers have had more home theatre support in the past through features and upgrades over Marantz. I also agree with some of the comments added to the video- the Anthem receivers do sound better to me after calibration and room equalization. While I appreciate the concept of sonic purity- speaker response, subwoofer integration and room interactions almost guarantee that the average user will probably need to use some sort of room equalization.

The new dolby surround that replace it is not as good apparently from reviewer, ( sound on the central speaker). Of course there is new codec now with dts hd and imax enhanced and dolby atmos dtx x, auro 3d. But in terms or musicality, i think my amplifier would be superior. Also it does not heat very much. Burr Brown isn’t a 100% good thing. Some 10 years ago I built a headphone amplifier and I needed an operational amplifier in that circuit. It’s a small chip with 8 legs. I bought several different chips to evaluate the difference. I was really shocked how dull, unarticulated and overly warm the sound came from praised Burr Brown OPA2134PA ($4.50) and how even and precise it was when I switched to cheap Texas Instruments NE5532P ($0.15)! Maybe for some vocal jazz BB would be OK, but for symphonic music - no, thank you.

GO 74 you can find all the review of my avr3803 and everybody praise the quality in cinema AND Hifi of the this amplifier receiver. And the Burr Brown 1791 was the best. Everybody that listen my system was amazed by the quality in both cinema and music with dvd audio, combined with Mission speaker (back classical music). The Burr Brown was very expensive not 4.50$ and there were 16 inside it 2 per channel. None of the current amplifier including 8012 marantz and denon 8500 can compete with it in HIFI. the Avr3803 and Avr5803 were monster and only receiver usable in Hifi. It was another time, of quality component and made in japan. I will never sell my amplifier that also has 7.1 input and output. I will simply buy a denon avr4700h processor (with hdmi 2.1 and all format) and continue to use my amp as amplifier 7.1 and via toslink and audio analogic for music. The new amplifier lose the centerspread feature removed by Dolby. So there is no good 7.1 upmixer mode from 2.1 to 7.1 except by going with auro 3d but with more complex speaker system requiring to change the speaker config.
