That was the Igbo Language. Anansi is common to the West African Coast. I was born in Jamaica to a Nigerian father and a mother from Louisiana. I grew up in Sweden and England hearing about the African Gods. The reason this scene gets me is because it is TRUE. I have 6 degrees in different fields. From Economics to Biochemistry to Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering. 16 years of experience earned from working in 25 countries globally. I am in Minnesota and finding it impossible to find work as an Engineering Manager. I finally had enough and quit after the third person I had trained was promoted to Principal Engineer while I remained a Senior Engineer. I know it was because of the color of my skin. The reluctance to promote a person of color to lead white folks is real. Deny all you wish. The Manager of the Chemistry Department quit and they dumped the position on me, because I’m also a Chemist. So, I worked as the interim supervisor for a year, while also doing my job as a Manufacturing Engineer without any adjustments to my pay. After 4 times of asking, I just had enough. My partner who is Caucasian said most white folks wouldn’t believe what Black folks endure if they didn’t live with one. I applied at a place and was told most of my experiences were from overseas. So what? Science and Engineering are some of the most transferable skill sets in the world. It’s just demoralizing that we do what they tell us to do and we are still denied opportunities. Like Anansi said!

havent seen anyone mention this yet, but in the show most of the gods are pretty self-serving and selfish, and belief and sacrifice are what give them power. It's heavily implied that Anansi the trickster god here deliberately got all those guys to burn the boat and take their own lives in a sacrifice to himself. Don't get me wrong, in the rest of the show and book he's shown to be furious about the way his people have been and continue to be treated, but he is also just as opportunistic and self-serving as Wednesday (one of the main characters in the story, a con-man and god), and gods getting power from 'technical' sacrifices is definitely a theme in the story as well, so i think it's pretty safe to assume he wanted that boat to burn.

When Orlando Jones interviewed about this scene, he give credits to the Bryan Fuller and Michael Green for this script. No improv, just straight from the script. As well as his co-star in the scene for reacting so convincingly to his performance that he did well as well. The scene Jones wrote himself was in the second season. It was an epic level speech as well. The first season was very good. The second season quality drop dramatically. The third season (current one) is an improvement and a letdown... There is a scene that, I personally, felt was an anti-thesis of this scene.

Anansi is the god of stories, wisdom, knowledge and trickery of the Akan people. Akan people were very often the main participants and leaders of slave rebellions in the Americas so this scene was very apt and resonant.

Some people that are in power could not understand why he would write this scene but, you have to remember that he is a trickster God. He told them that raw truth only to get them to commit suicide in his name. He could have told them all types of ways to defeat the system or get themselves back home but, since he's only about prayer and sacrifice which is most of the old gods it was beneficial to him for them to go out that way therefore, he wasn't helping them. He was only helping himself. Basically, he tricked them into killing themselves to empower him instead of teaching them to be better than the situation there in or just turning around once they were dead. He should have never prayed to a trickster God but, they didn't know at that time that he was a trickster God. It's actually a perfect scene if you look past what's going on in America and looking at the actual dialogue of the show.

Here's the reason why I love this show. This God has all the stories past and present. If he wanted to he could have changed the course of history with just telling them what they needed to do but, they prayed to a trickster God and he doesn't work that way so, what did he do? He told them enough to have them sacrificed himself in his name. It's actually beautiful writing if you can get past the trickery and look at the writing of the story.

On the off chance there is nobody here who has seen the show or read the book - the gods only have power according to how much people believe in or worship them. Anansi will just fade away otherwise. So the 'Old Gods' are fading, while some of the 'New Gods' have become very powerful very quickly. Neil Gaiman said that Technical Boy had to be very enhanced over the book, because everything he represents has grown much more powerful.

In the book, the people carry their gods with them. So the slaves carried there concepts of Anansi to a America, so consequently there are other Anansi in other nations where Anasi Worshipers god. This is why there were so many versions of Jesus in the show. This is a very interesting mechanism in Neil Gaiman's world building... I hated the Casting of Orlando Jones for the part, until I saw this episode. Now no one can ever Play Anansi for me again... He KILLED it!

I thought his character was interesting too. He would motivate people to move in anger and sacrifice themselves for him, usually black people. Part of this scene that I found interesting is when he says they get to be worked to death “for a purple shirt” and then pops the collar of his full purple suit.
