Ask An Expert: Oil balancing ensures the correct amount of oil is maintained in the a/c system when the system is flushed or components are replaced. In this video, we share the correct procedure to ensure system longevity.

This exact procedure only applies if the system has not lost any oil. Actual conditions differ. This does not apply if the system has had leaks which resulted in oil loss, which often is the case that causes compressors to fail and a replacement required which could have decreased the overall oil amount in the system. Example 10PA series pumps / I ensure about 100ml goes in every compressor that I physically fit in the car. Run the system once various loads, then let idle with A/C on for a while at high fan speed which tends to return more oil to pump. Recover and remove compressor, then check oil. If very low, you know you will have to add a decent amount to actually balance the system. Example, a system with a large leak could only have a very small amount such as a few drops or maybe 5ml come out of the compressor and the rest of the system may have had hardly any oil left, you sure as hell don't put a brand new pump in with that low amount of oil in. As such doing the oil balancing in this case would give you a overall low oil amount and in this case the right thing to do is add 120ml of oil in - keeping in mind in some large or custom systems you can't add the entire oil charge for the system in the actual pump if need be and you have to split it into another component. Also 120ml that comes with the new Denso compressor (allthough it might physically work and perhaps still last) is not the correct amount for the whole system this is wrong, many systems have much more than 120ml , often 160-230ml in the entire system, often if you read many Toyota service manuals from many larger cars you will see 8 ounces is common spec.

Why on earth would anyone service an AC system that did not ever leak in the first place? This procedure seems reliant on a preventive type of care that cannot be practical or reasonable to most owners. In reality, AC systems are only worked on when they are malfunctioning. Breaking the seals (and shraeder valves) almost guarantees a future failure anyways.

BMW and many others are running into this issue with 1234yf The early machines did not have an "inject oil" feature. So every time someone recovers the system a little oil is lost. eventually there's no oil & the compressor fails, especially on EKK systems.

So do you really need to drain the oil out of the new ac compressor ?? I had bought a denso ac compressor specific for my suv.
@onemoremisfit2 жыл бұрын
Questions: That small plug on the bottom of the unit where you drained the oil, is there a seal on that plug that must be replaced if disturbed? The plug on my Denso unit also looks unusual, as if it were a safety relief valve of some sort, is that the case? I drained my unit thru the line ports by holding it line ports down over a container and rotating the shaft slowly until all oil stopped flowing out, because that seemed to work OK and I was not sure about disturbing that plug. Then I refilled it the same way thru the suction line port, again no problems.
@densoaustralia1362 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thank you for your query. The pressure relief valve must not be removed. The process you explained sounds correct. You should also turn the compressor by hand before fitment and follow all fitment run in procedures by the car maker.

Picked up a DENSO compressor for my 2006 Honda Civic Sedan along with what I understand to be the most common components to do a replacement (new condenser, drier, and expansion valve) and insure that I'm not cycling any old junk in the lines through the new compressor. Will be getting the system evacuated of all coolant and oil before replacing these components. The only thing I'm not replacing is the evaporator, which is a major pain to get out and replace. Am I understanding correctly that with the system evacuated and these 4 new components, oil balancing will not be needed? e.g., New compressor, condenser, drier, and expansion valve means the oil in the compressor is adequate for the system? Or will I be off and need balancing due to the evaporator not being replaced? 🤔 Thanks!
@innocentbystander6 Жыл бұрын
The NEW compressor may come with more or less oil than what your system calls for. It's best not to guess and flush everything that is not being replaced to remove all the old oil and contaminants. Look up your car's AC system oil requirement and make sure you put only that much in your new compressor.
@mutatioveritas4559 Жыл бұрын
@@innocentbystander6 Thanks for the reply! It's interesting because the compressor I got came with a tag that says, "Oil balancing is NOT needed when installing compressor on the vehicle A/C system." Tracking down the Honda repair manual, it notes, "Since the oil separator is equipped inside the compressor for this vehicle, oil drainage is unnecessary at the time of compressor replacement." Does that change things at all? 🤔

I have installed a new Denso 471-1145 compressor, a new drier and new hoses in my 93 4Runner. I vacuumed it down and tried charging it. It wouldn't take a charge and the compressor started to rattle. I pulled the compressor and took the top plate off, turned it upside down and not even an ounce of oil was in it. I added 3 1/2 ounces of mineral oil and reinstalled it. Today I put a new evaporator and expansion valve in it. I am ready to vacuum it and try charging it again. Where did the oil in my new compressor go? Why did it rattle if it came with oil in it? I tried draining oil out of the evaporator. None came out and i flooded it with brake cleaner and poured the evaporator out in a can. A few droplets of oil were in it. I then turned my old compressor upside down and no oil came out. I left it overnight and about a half ounce drained out. The old compressor was barely making any noise and didn't rattle like the new one did. Now i am totally confused where the new compressor oil went to. Is it all in the new drier and old condenser? Is 3 1/2 ounces of added oil to the compressor too much or not enough? If i just added the amount of oil in the old compressor it would have been 1/2 ounce. I wish I would have checked the quantity of oil in the new compressor but i didn't. What should I do next? I am totally lost on where all the oil went. Please help.

I know this is a 2 year old video most likely not responded to when new questions are asked. If i follow the instructions on this video I should empty out my new compressor and put it on empty since my old compressor is empty yet wasn't making noise when removed.

Hi Denis, If the Mercedes manual states that the system hold 120ml of oil and the DENSO compressor contains 120ml of oil there is no need to add the extra 20ml. I suspect that the adding of 20ml would be if you were only replacing the condenser. Be sure to follow the car makers repair procedures.

This problem is not common in my place for cars that come with fixed displacement compressors. Can you help to understand what to do so that my 5se09c compressor to last? Hi, The compressor should be a scroll type. The compressor we have listed for this application is a “SCSA08C” (Specs can be viewed on our website under parts search). It would be a good idea to ensure the system is vacuumed and refrigerant charged to specification. Also ensure you manifold gauges are serviceable. After that it would be easier to diagnose if there is a problem. We hope this helps.

So what I gather from this is if you have a compressor that failed due to no oil, drain all of the oil from the new compressor so it fails too. that's why denso is still in business. I'm going to error on the side of caution & just install my compressor with a full charge of oil.
