Wow this is really interesting. My granny (not amish) had all of her teeth pulled and dentures put in as a wedding present. It was seen as saving you future pain and money on dental care at the time. Seems absolutely insane to me now.
@mareezy8 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that 😮 I'm a 37 yr old dentist. Never had a cavity. So besides preventative visits (cleanings) and removing my wisdom teeth, I have not spent money at the dentist. So to hear that they would pull all her teeth to save money at the dentist is crazy because extractions and dentures are way more expensive
@vacafuega8 ай бұрын
@@mareezyno offense, but If you're a dentist you should probably spend some time listening to people who have had a lot of dental problems. Your current perspective is one of complete obliviousness, and as a person who's suffered terribly at the hands of such dentists (dental pain is often very tied in with trauma experiences, imagine you're a gynecologist working on a woman who's suffered severe sexual violence) I implore you to gain a good and deep understanding of how tooth issues can be experienced by a wide variety of people.
@mareezy8 ай бұрын
@vacafuega I am not oblivious. I think perhaps I did word my comment poorly. I'm just trying to say that pulling all the teeth to save money is not a good technique. It's better to follow evidence-based dentistry and never need to spend money at the dentist. Brush, floss and fluoride. Limit frequency of sugary foods if you can't eliminate them. The point I was trying to make is that spending money on extractions and dentures is wayyyyyyy more. I'm sorry she had to go through that. It's definitely not her fault and I wrote her that on a separate comment previously. I was just trying to explain her elder's technique is not good. Has nothing to do with me being oblivious to dental trauma. Fun fact, I get often told women are way more gentle dentists than men and they wish they had a woman dentist like me before but they only had male dentists. Also, a bunch of us who have never had a single cavity just follow the guidelines, aka fluoride toothpaste with ADA seal, brush, floss, etc. Our elders didn't know about good oral hygiene either but there is no reason why people shouldn't know about it moving forward. Conspiracy theories are not good. For instance, oil pulling does not reverse or stop cavities lol
@Rose-jz6sx8 ай бұрын
@mareezy oh yeah it's crazy. But I guess back in the day they didn't know about flossing and fluoride? And it was ofc expected that you'd have loads of kids and that can do a number on your teeth... Many factors that make it totally unnecessary today thankfully.

They can claim ignorance all they want, but brushing/cleaning your teeth on a regular basis has been part of human hygiene for millennia. There’s evidence of tribal societies from thousands of years ago brushing and in ancient Aztec and Rome they even had dental care. Like removing cavities and filling them care. The Amish had to have literally dropped what was known about dental care at some point. When they came to the US, brushing teeth was normal. “Tooth powders” albeit not with fluoride, were fairly widely available. Doctors and barbers provided various levels of dental care.
