The three Denton Homes Eaglets that were re-homed yesterday into a temporary newly build nest were removed today by the local bird experts at Iowa Bird Rehab. They will spend the night at their rehab facility and in the morning will be transported to SOAR (Saving Our Avian Resources) to begin rehabbing. Denton Homes Iowa states: "All three eaglets will be removed today and taken to a rehab center. We do appreciate everyone's prayers. support and love for this nest/ We are all sad but the eaglets are the #1 priority".
Update From SOAR: " ~ tough, but necessary decision ~
SOAR feels the Denton home eaglets need to come into rehabilitation because:
** Parents have not been visiting or feeding.
** The eaglets have spent more than 40 hours without food. We are worried about starvation and dehydration.
** The eaglets' bodies are growing many feathers at this stage and need good nutrition to form properly.
** Structure they are in is susceptible to predation, being only 8 feet or so off the ground.
** Plus, we are in line for more storms tonight with heavy rain and wind.
Thanks must go to Jen at Iowa Bird Rehabilitation for her efforts!
Once these eaglets are stable, have gained weight, and are a bit older, they will join other eagles in the flight pen.
We have been successfully rehabbed eagles of all ages and stages for the last 25 years."
This is the right decision to make for the eaglets to be given a chance at living a normal and full life. Rehabbing young eaglets is a slow process but one that has a high success rate. SOAR is an excellent rehab center designed to handle the needs of the three eaglets.
Many thanks to Iowa Bird Rehabilitation for jumping into action so quickly to care for these eaglets. This violent storm displaced quite a few birds & they are very busy working to care from them as well.
Many thanks once again the the entire Denton Homes Iowa team for their quick response in rescuing the eaglets, rebuilding a nest & returning the eaglets to it! What an amazing effort we are witnessing! Their dedication to the well being of the eagle family is inspirational!

The initial rescue and nest rebuild was rapid and admirable, as well as the speedy decision to take the Eaglets back off the nest and into rehab, to protect their lives and ensure their further development. With the parents not close enough to protect the nest I was worried about raccoons and foxes, and of course malnutrition at this critical stage. Also 1 of the Eaglets was clearly struggling with what appeared to be pain when putting pressure down on the right leg/foot, which is why it was using its wings to alleviate the pressure when trying to move around. Sincere prayers for these Eaglets and thanksgiving for this outcome!

Sad that the parents did not show interest but that’s nature, one is badly Injured so Im glad they were taken away to get the care they need. ​@clicketysplit1817 They had a rough experience being blown out of the nest and then taken to a foreign place spent the night, Sure they were scared and to my understanding none of them were hurt other than bruised and a little banged up. Plus they were placed into a unfamiliar nest. That's been alot for them to handle and deal with.

I'm happy they were taken back to SOAR for all the reasons listed. It seemed like 2 of them had issues with their talons, 1 was obvious and the 2nd had something going on as well. They can get better care and nutrition to heal their injuries without being in that vulnerable nest. It was a great effort to give it a try by DH group and rescuers. Thank you to everyone. Watching dad, wow... he is just a handsome dude. Glad the eaglets were removed. There was a huge raccoon on the nest in the evening and a big storm after the removal. Hoping they are getting plenty of food and love.

All in all this has had a very good outcome. The three youngsters are in expert hands and when they are ready they will be released back into the wild. Meanwhile Mom and Dad Eagles can regroup from the staggering events of the last days. Thank you to the Dentons, SOAR and the Iowa Bird Rehab shelter. Thanks for the video Lady Hawk.

I was out of town for 24 hours and first thing I did was checked in ... As always I'm so very, very appreciative of everything LH does to keep us informed. Sad to see these 3 eaglets needed to go back to rehab; however, much relieved as well. (probably more so.)

I am both happy and sad that they had to take them. I was concerned for the one eaglet that seemed to not be moving much while the other two were moving, that one seemed almost afraid to move or was perhaps in some pain. I can only image the fall gave them trauma and not having the parents there traumatized them more, along with the added trauma of the humans no matter how gentle, I would image it would be like humas seeing real life aliens. I pray for these innocent little beings a happy and successful rehab.

I hate that we don't get to see them anymore, but I am thankful SOAR took action - bless their hearts! What a whirlwind for the triplets. I hope they get to stay together---they are the three musketeers! I noticed the third eaglet that was having difficulty standing, and rescued last, was not placed into the carrier with the other two. Seems they were giving it its own special handling or space to lay down, which made me smile to see them giving that one special attention. Saying prayers that baby gets to feeling better soon. Thank you for the video. I sure hope SOAR is able to post regular updates/pics of these three---I'm gonna miss them! Hugs LH ❤

Hello djr6876 both parents have been seen at the nest tree and are not MIA. The parents just have not shown any interest in the new nest or have not come down to investigate the nest or to feed their eaglets. For that reason and for the health and survival of the eaglets it was decided to remove them and send to SOAR for rehabbing.

Yeah I wonder if they can like not recognize that it's their children in there? Or maybe just instinctively? They think it's pointless and that they should start over. It's real easy for us to think about the three eaglet lives, but of course animals driven by instinct sometimes make tough decisions, sacrificing their own children's lives. The eagles aren't really able to recognize that this human intervention could change the odds, instinctively. It might just be best for the survival of the species for them to work on building a new nest mating again and so on. .... But I am just a curious dude who started following bird channels a few months ago so I'm probably wrong.

There are no easy solutions to these situations. Each eagle pair reacts differently to these upsets. This was apparently not acceptable to the parent birds. A judgment call was made to remove them. We can only 'hope' they can be ultimately successfully released.

Yeah I was thinking instinctively eagles might recognize that a disaster like this, the best thing for the survivalist species would be to start over. With human intervention the odds change but these eagles probably can't figure that out!

Thank you for saving them. I hope the parents are OK. Have you seen them? Most parents do not abandon their babies. I hope these parents are not injured somewhere. Will anyone look for them? Also I am concerned about baby birds in the path of the wildfires. In Canada and elsewhere. Will they also be rescued?

So when you say rehab, does that mean they someday be released? What would happen if they happened to run across their parents in a year or so.. would they recognize each other? Sorry some of these questions might be be quite ill-informed or silly to an expert, but just a lot of questions about the logistics here. Release depends on whether it’s assessed that they can survive in the wild. Fly, catch prey, not become prey due to poorly healed injuries, etc. Common thought is they don’t recognize each other in the wild, but subadults and adolescents are often found around nests. Whether it was their nest or not isn’t known, I don’t think.

Excellent decision! Thank you for monitoring them and taking such good care of these little guys! It's sad that the parents did not return but you tried your best. Sometimes these things work and sometimes they don't. It sounds like the eaglets will be given wonderful care and training in their new home!

Where did the one guy take the 3rd Eaglet to? The other 2 were put in the deal right below the nest but i saw the guy take the 3rd eaglet somewhere else...hope its ok...

Hi Lady Hawk - I'm glad S.O.A.R. removed them again to yheir facility. I jad no idea the new nest was only 8 ft above the ground - yikes! I hope S.O.A.R.S. does an X-Ray on the two eaglets that seem to have leg/ankle bruising or injuries. Have a nice Memorial Day - get a little rest. Look forward to updates on the 3 eaglets. Thank you! Hello Stephanie my apologies for not getting back to you sooner! The last report I saw from SOAR all three eaglets were doing good (no injury on that one we thought had hurt its leg) They are eating well. gaining weight. I would imagine they will be moved to a larger flight enclosure for them to start using their wings for strength now! Take care and I hope you are doing well!

Not an expert, but this seems premature to me. The chick (that pushed out its sibling) in MN went close to a week without food because the father was killed and the mother was a lousy hunter. But she got better and was able to feed the eaglet to fledging. Sometime hunting just sucks. And without a ready source of road kill to augment their other catches, its seems there may be some time between kills for a short period of time. Of course there are 3 birds in this nest which probably played into the decision.

Hi Denise no - SOAR is very busy with all their rescue and rehabilitation patients but we do get to see a few pics of them posted every now and then. They are all doing great, eating about a pound of food a day each!! ♥

There were a lot of factors: these three were in a nest that blew down, so they might have been injured. The parents weren't visiting them in the new location, so they weren't getting food, and there was some nasty weather in the forecast. So, for now, they're under human care.
