Well trained truck drivers are in increasingly short supply because we are treated like shit and paid peanuts. These kinds of incidents, and the one in Humboldt, are just the beginning! So keep treating us like shit and screwing us out of pay! You can always hire highly skilled cheap labour from third world countries! Or, maybe not!

I drive truck over the road. Been doing this for 35 years. When I seen the guy's video of the live stream. You see smoke coming from under the trailer in front of the tires, as well as a trail of smoke after he passes. Which means he burnt his breaks up. When that happens. A truck can't stop because they no longer have, any breaks. This happens when a driver rides his breaks to keep slowing down the truck. Which they have to do when they are in too high of a gear when coming down a hill. Or at times, riding the breaks in traffic for too long. With speeding up and hitting the breaks again and again in traffic. When this happens. It's all driver error. This driver rode his breaks too hard. Which caused break failure. How his breaks were smoking as he passed that car. He didn't have any breaks anymore. There was no way he was stopping that truck. The driver is at fault, not the equipment.

jas He couldn’t read English, they suspect as he descended Eisenhower pass into Denver he never took any actions to prepare for the grade, he possibly suspected he could ride it out because he was unaware of what was ahead. This is the result of not being able to read the signs and not being adequately trained how to handle such an emergency. Years ago they did teach drivers how to ditch a truck or even lay it over if needed, today they don’t teach anything really.

I'm not taking up for the driver of the truck, but if he didn't do this on purpose, his Diesel Engine could have been a runaway and he panicked by not taking the truck out of gear and slowing down with the breaks. Just a guess though. Diesel engines can go wide open throttle even with the ignition off and become a runaway situation. But that's what the transmission is for unless it got locked up from the torque. He was using the emergency lane until it ran out and at that point it was head on with the embankment of the road overhead. I'm not sure what the better option would have been, heading up that embankment and into the traffic up there, or heading into the direction he went. So sad this happened. I'm praying for these families!
@ffjsb5 жыл бұрын
A runaway diesel engine is an EXTREMELY rare occurrence. The driver clearly didn't know what he was doing and shouldn't have been behind the wheel of a truck.
@midnightryder6115 жыл бұрын
It’s not the engine running away. It is from being in too high a gear. Trucks are designed to use the power of the engine to control the weight down the mountain. If the truck goes into neutral, the brakes will quickly burn up. Now you have neither engine braking or service breaks. The truck is defined as runaway. There’s no coming back. You must ditch on an emergency runaway ramp. The engine remains at idle as 80000 lbs propel you faster and faster down the mountain
@ShaneCarles5 жыл бұрын
In Burgers live stream video when the truck goes by just before the accident, you can hear the engine is loaded up and at high RPM.
@midnightryder6115 жыл бұрын
Shane Carles people will hear it differently, but I am confident that you hear 80,000 lbs rolling across concrete at incredible speed with Doppler Effect. Regardless, investigators I am sure will have access to telemetry. If the engine was opened up you woulda heard it coming earlier. Thankfully you are not making an argument that this driver propelled this truck wide open into stopped traffic intentionally . I do hear your argument and based on my experience I would strongly disagree.

When you say runaway, do you mean like when oil starts getting sucked into the intake and the engine uses it as fuel?

People on here talking trash about how the driver should fry and how he should've sacrificed his own life, are moronic, heartless and clueless. Obviously, the driver didn't know he would encounter a back-up ahead that was due to yet a different crash; and anyone in his situation would be looking for a place to get to safety. If he had driven off the road, his rig would've rolled, and who knows how many casualties there would've been then. Harsh, cruel, and idiotic Monday Morning Quarterbacking does NOT help this tragic situation. Likely, ANY person (human organism) would've responded the way the truck driver did, driving in the Emergency Lane and trying to find an opening into which to drive his truck safely out of traffic. Spare the atrocious judgment, and look at this realistically and kindly. Please.
@newdimension47315 жыл бұрын
Lionswimmer have you ever drove in a semi? do you know HOW FAR you can see ahead? 1 mile ahead even more, so, the semi driver going extremely fast on the service road knew the traffic had stopped. So why did he continue driving fast instead of slowing down tremendously and putting on his 4 ways?
@lionswimmer46375 жыл бұрын
@@newdimension4731 When I wrote the above comment, I'd read that his brakes had failed. Conversely, after I wrote the above comments, I also read that he'd passed two runaway truck ramps; so that changes my opinion. Then again, further complicating things is when I heard the Police Rep state on video that problems to other drives may have been caused if the driver had taken one of the runaway truck ramps. So, I'm now waiting for all the evidence to come in...which is the sensible thing to do in the first place.
@midnightryder6115 жыл бұрын
lionswimmer there is no question his best option after going runaway was to utilize the emergency ramp. These ramps have been used for years specifically to avoid this. No other traffic would have been involved, and chances are his rig would have remained upright and intact.

From what I gather, the state of Colorado and the Colorado DOT is just as criminally wrong in this accident. The investigation officer point blank stated the reason as to why both accidents occurred that day. That reason is: CONGESTION!! In fact, he made it out that just like any other day, congestion on I-70 is a problem everyday. The DOT knew that this interstate area is a hotspot for congestion, and they did NOTHING to alleviate that congestion in the many years that they knew about it. They KNEW that there was going to be slowdowns and stop and go traffic on this freeway, and guess what? The worst thing to have on a freeway with vehicles going 70+MPH is to have vehicles stop!! Go ahead, slam on your brakes doing 70 miles an hour, you will find out real quick as another vehicle is going to rear end your butt doing 70, and you will be dead!! Now, take an out of state driver, who lost control of his big rig, and you want him to know that this hotspot exists? You want him to stop, take evasive maneuvers, slam in the ditch at the last minute with a company vehicle, and not expect this outcome? If you do, you are high on crack, and need serious psychological help!! It is the responsibility of the local, state, and federal governments to provide tax paying citizens with SAFE and RELIABLE road networks, and yet our roads get an "D" rating by Army Corps of Engineering. That is based on a road network that was designed and built in the 19th and 20th century. Fast forward to the 21st Century (the one that we are in now), and the road network in this country get an "F" rating. The fact that this type of accident doesn't happen more often by in itself is an act of god!! Our governments blow trillions of dollars on pork projects, and yet blame the citizens for having to deal with the lackluster attempts by the governments to do what they are supposed to do.

ButteredTank Candy O is right. He had multiple chances to ditch. This is negligence not malicious. He should have been trained better. You couldn’t imagine how fast all this happens. Most likely he come off the top of the mountain in high gear chumming along at 70mph. The engine brake will hold it somewhat, but it continues to build speed. This is where the driver begins to brake. Prolonged and excessive brake pressure will heat up and begin to burn the pads and shoes. This I assume is where he tried shifting to a lower gear, and what resulted in total loss of control. I would wager this happened at exactly the time he went by the emergency ramp and nearly clipped a pick up making that left hander. It appears to me that the driver came out of gear at this point.
