@@Michael-wy6fh To a kid, You're a (seemingling) 7 foot tall giant with a weird mask wearing weird cloths, and covered in weird gear that makes weird noises. It's not so much they're scared, more so.. confused. A lot of kids that age are also scared of loud sudden noises, and when fire fighters are brought up, the first thing that goes through their minds are Fire Alarms. Which are about as loud and sudden a noise as you can get.

It's awesome to see, that Denver apparently has a welcoming attitude towards female firefighters. I counted at least four between engine/truck 26 and engine 10, which is way above the nationwide average of 2%. I never understand those departements with resentments or downright discrimination, because - as my old captain put it in his 'unique' style - as long as you're doing your job and have my back, I don't care what's between your legs.
@Howard3S7 жыл бұрын
I have little to no respect for female firefighters or police officers. I discovered that the police entrance physical tests are laddered by gender and age. Basically a woman can run the 1.5 miler at the time of a 60 year old male. Ridiculous. when you're overcome by smoke and need a ladder resuce to you want a local firefighter with the nickname "Peter Pan" coming to get you or a guy with the nickname "refrigerator". Ya ya, its not all strength, being smart is important, but strength and stamina is a pass/fail issue, not a lets pretend we are all the same issue. This willc ost lives. The guys only dare talk about it after they have their pension. ONe trainer released a video of men vaulting over a wall with full gear on, every female basically clogged up the wall because not one could get over it. ON day 3, the trainer was given "a few days off". the wall was lowered and everyone got over it. He retired a month later. He said he could not play social experimenter with the lives of his trainees or the public. Maybe, just maybe a few women are truly physically qualified, but we will never knkow for sure as long as the standards aren't there. NOw, this is at young ages, the rpime, as women age, much more than men, any muscular decline is marked. Good luck with a 50 year old female firefighter with the nickname "Mrs. Diubltfire".

Dude seriously? I was a volunteer firefighter for a while and we had 3 female firefighters on our department. They kicked ass just like the men did. Female firefighters deserve the same respect that the male firefighters do. Shame on you for not having respect for female firefighters
@Corvid7 жыл бұрын
100% for sure! When I did my physical section test (Oxfordshire, UK) I trained absolutely specifically for the role... I'm 6 foot 1, but I'm a very small guy (156lbs) and I aced the test, just like every woman there (some of whom were a LOT more muscular than me!). What shocked me was the number of personal trainers, and absolutely hench guys who struggled with the final hurdle (carrying a 33kg dumbell 100m after a grueling equipment carry test) because they simply didn't have the endurance needed overall, let alone in their hands. Hammered home by one of the watch managers (ex navy) who in typical military style bellowed at us "NEVER in the history of the fire service has a chair been hauled aloft with a bootlace". Our fuckup? We were messing up on the training ground because we'd nailed all our knots in the classroom with shoe strings, which didn't translate so well to hauling aloft a CO2 extinguisher with 11mm line! Agreed 100%... benching 400lbs won't help you run out a mile of 70mm hose when that's how far the nearest hydrant is. Same goes for the other emergency services... I've seen a tiny female police officer dodge a right hook sucker punch and knock a massive guy out stone cold with a full force open handed slap on the jaw. Each gender has strong points, and there's nothing better than a well balanced team!
@MrPaglissi7 жыл бұрын
Howard It started with FDNY after the '70s. Now it's a nationwide EO issue. I don't really care about these other commenters "one time at band camp" stories. Just arbitrary anecdotal nonsnese. The absolute truth is that standards have been lowered to accommodate for a more diverse environment. It's not without it's benefits and I believe in equal rights. However, you can spare me the "men are just as strong as women" BS. Half of the MEN in this video don't look like they could do ten pullups. There in the real problem is revealed. Lowering standards to acoomodate The weak makes for a weaker overall force in any capacity.

I've read most of the comments here and what bothers me (a retired DE/Paramedic) is the disparity between states concerning EMS/EMT and ALS procedures. Back in the 70's when ALS was just coming on line with the fire and Pvt ambulance services. It was frustrating but understandable why one state allowed certain procedures and another state would hang back and see what happens when those procedures were performed. Here we are, 48 years later, and there is still no reciprocity between Paramedic and EMT training and procedures. An RN can travel from state and carry out what she learned in nursing school. All they need to do is produce their records and transcripts to their prospective employers. To me, this disparity could be alleviated by standardizing the curriculum so each state is teaching the same thing. As it is, each state, county and city control their own little EMS fiefdom. This makes it hard for EMT's and Parameds to move around the country, plus the level of care also suffers. And, oh yeah, the Capt is hot.

I mean, I get that a pulse-ox is needed for medical stuff.. but.. they're not particularly useful when it comes to CO poisoning... They tend to overestimate SpO2(it can't tell the difference between free hemoglobin and CO), so it doesn't tell you a whole lot. it could read 99% sats but the CO might be binding to say.. 20% of the hemoglobin making so the patient would be hypoxic even with good sats.

Heh welcome to the land of lawsuits! I agree, I'd go with oral if conscious, and IM Glucagon if conscious but compliant/aggressive. Had one guy who was like a zombie with a hypo, GCS 14, but threatening to kill us if we approached him. Projectile vomiting round the room, staring into space, not well. We eventually did a "prison cell" job, bomb burst into the room, pined him down with a sheet, jabbed him with IM Glucagon and got the fuck out! 35 minutes later, he was making us all a cup of tea, no memory of what happened! Amazing how fragile the brain is without constant oxygen and glucose!

To me ti always feels like American FDs are the classic example for how overpreparation can distract you from your goal. These guys are so entombed in their procedures and saftey crap that they totally overlook the fact that if they could put water on a fire within one minute of arrival, like the Dutch for example, the fire would be much smaller to begin with, and the damage could be kept to a minimum. Instead, these guys arrive on scene and need about 10 minutes until everything is safe... and then they put water on a fire about 5 times the size than before. Sad....
