@charles38402 жыл бұрын
@CRACKBONE MacBeth being white is about as relevant to Shakespearean performances as my ass hair is to me having a tasty breakfast. You're just being racist. Change your view on this.
@charles38402 жыл бұрын
@CRACKBONE It's fucking Shakespeare. This isn't a normal set of stories we're talking about. This is the rule for his work: an actor gets to take a wack at his characters. Shakespeare is considered peak storytelling. I would expect Ulysses to be cast with Irish actors, because that is more limited to Irish culture. But this is Shakespeare. No matter the who they are, every person going through theater school is going to be in one of his plays. And if they become famous, they'll probably be offered a role again at the peak of their career (like Denzel was here). Shakespeare is so divorced from a specific culture it's pointless to limit him to "white" culture. Shakespeare is theater culture, and non-white actors are going to play his characters. (And I'll note you've alternated between saying it should be a white man or an irish man; is it okay for Benedict Cumberbatch to play MacBeth, then? Your own opinion is inconsistant.) Besides, Shakespeare was English. It's not like he was being exactly pure in keeping cultures separate and in their own spheres.

See if I can help. This is written, directed and presented in a different interpretation of MacBeth. It is presented in German Surrealism. It's an art form presented as if what you're seeing is a dream or nightmare. It's black and white in set, costume, charactor and story design. The definition, Surrealism is a cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. So here, the play is appealing to your subconscious. There are no rules in who plays what or what things look like and the laws of physics don't apply. See it as if you are dreaming. It is a beautiful artform. It hits the mark beautifully. In the play, Lady MacBeth goes insane. MacBeth has a mental breakdown. Surrealism is a great way to express what happens when you go insane. My favorite scene in Macbeth... and this is the best iteration of it I've ever seen. The marching armies that can be heard at first, slamming to a halt as Macbeth sits. Siward loudly and ominously taking the stairs to reach him. The way Macbeth is so done with his own ambitions but defends them anyways because he's completely run out of anything else to do. The way he knows he won't die and fights completely whimsically. And of course, my favorite line in the entire story. "My NAME... is Macbeth." Shakespeare is king 👑

We've seen swashbuckling sword fights over and over in dozens of movies over our lifetimes. None memorable. The "sword fight" scene in this movie, however...now THAT is memorable; the young hothead is well armed but impatient and undisciplined. But Macbeth is older, battle-tested, seasoned, and unarmed. The fight is at once blunt and elegant. Unlike any fight I've seen in any movie. Simple, and yet innovative. A joy to watch.

Hands down one of the most fire scenes Denzel has EVER performed smfh. I am a Denzel aficionado and he has some pretty complex scenes…..this one is bar none the most quintessential sum up of his skills. It’s literal perfection.
