The 70's ones are the BEST vintage receivers. Followed closely by the early 80's.
@joeygonzo4 жыл бұрын
True that. The 80's was ruined by AV receivers . Pure stereo were the best . HK's AVR receivers were nowhere near as good as their stereo receivers.
@hippydippy5 жыл бұрын
Spraying through the front doesn't "usually" do much at all except waste good spray. You really need to take them apart & spray directly into the potentiometer openings for the best results.

I had an HK PM-665 integrated amp with the same issues. This is problematic for HK receivers, amps and Yamaha components of the same era. I gave my amp away and upgraded. I enjoy my current setup but I really miss the sweet sound of the HK. Fast forward, and now I am aware of Deoxit as a fix. I wish I had known. If it was anatomically possible, I would kick my own ass. Good for you. That receiver will continue to produce great sound for decades to come. Nice video. Respect

correction, it's really great. Superior to any contact cleaner because it doesn't clean lightning fast like many others do, thereby only moving the grude to a spot a micrometer away before evaporating. When my Sony camera won't read the memory card, I use Dexo on the contacts, then it will. It was reported to have saved some audio device during one of McCarthy's concerts. Trust it on any component, I even used it on electric razor, so it's safe on skin.

You used the wrong Deoxit spray on the fader and volume controls. D5 Deoxit is for metal to metal contact cleaning like a switch. Switches have metal contacts. Potentiometers have carbon paths. The right Deoxit you should have used is DeoxIT Fader Spray (F100 or F5), Contact Cleaner/Lube/Protector for Conductive Plastics & Carbon Controls. The Deoxit F5 and F100 will not destroy the carbon paths in the fader and volume controls. The D5 will work in the short term but will deteriorate the the carbon paths in the pots. Which means you will have to replace the pots when the carbon paths fail. Correct me if I’m wrong.

i had same experience had a Kenwood KA 880SD where right channel was out and would crackle when volume was adjusted. took faceplate off applied Deoxit to knobs and switches cleaned RCA connectors on back of AMP and blew out with air.has run like a top ever since.

Like you, I thought I we could no longer get the toxic chlorinated solvents but I found out you CAN. Look for a product called Brakleen, non-flamable version (red can). I think it is available in most states but maybe not California. I use the stuff to clean bicycle chain but maybe I will try in on my collection of old, scratchy sounding receivers. Thanks for the video.

How did you get the deoxIT inside the pots ? many audio ones are almost sealed and if you spray from the outside, you only clean the outside ?

I know I can do this. I have a roughly 36-year-old Onkyo TX-18 receiver. I love it. But for a decade or two it's "fuzzed-out" or blanked on one or the other speaker. I took it into a local guy who's really good, but I knew as soon as I got it home he'd either not understood me and done nothing, or had not been able to fix it. The Onkyo has a cascading set of on-off switches--tuner, phono, CD, Tape1/Video, Tape2/Monitor. Only the last "locks"; the rest are either/or (want the turntable, you press phono; want the radio, press tuner, etc.). I must joggle the Monitor button to try and eke out sound on the left speaker. Perhaps this stuff will work...

Hi, thanks for the vid. I've got a question for you: One of my phono inputs of a Marantz preamp sc500 randomly fades the volume of the left channel. Sometimes it happens, sometimes don't. Never fades the volume to zero but it is very noticeable. If I switch back to Phono1 and back again to 2, the volume comes back. Do you think DeOxit D5 could help with that? Should I spray it on the phono rca inputs too? Thanks in advance.

*Mine is still going strong...not bad for a 35 year old receiver! These smaller H/K receivers with analog tuners remain some of the most buttery-smooth-clean units with a lot of "extra" power engineered in*
@tarstarkusz6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Pay no mind to the marketing bullshit, especially about power. My Harman Kardon 730 from the 70s is rated at 45 watts per channel and it blows away later receivers rated at much higher power. Very sensitive receiver as well, both AM and FM. It weighs a good 25 pounds and everything inside it is well made. Even the metal has been chromated! The wires are all thick and most of the resisters are 1/2 watt. They really don't make stuff like this today, even at the high end in the consumer market. It also has a proper phono input as well.

Hey Chris , I recently moved a friend who had purchased a realistic STA-2000 receiver with Mach one speakers model no. 40-402 4A in 1978. Well, after some research was impressed at the specs on both receiver and speakers impressive at the least, as well realizing that know I'm going to have to clean it, found BN deoxit is the end be all product to clean the contacts, switches and pots, living in Canada it's not as readily available as it is in the US. I've never cleaned a component so it will be my first although confident it should go well, I want to do it right the first time and not have deal with any issues from using a inferior cleaning solution. After more research know that it probably is the best choice as I can purchase it on line. Thanks for the video and any advice you can give on what not to do or do short of staying away from the capacitors would be greatly appreciated, and again thanks.

STA-2000 and Mach One's eh? Now that brings back some memories. I had a pair of Mach One's in the early 80s. Sold them to a friend. That was dumb...should have kept them. As of 2016...35 years later...he still uses them. One of the best speakers Radio Shack ever made. As for the receiver...most of the receivers from the period were pretty warm/powerful. The two power caps may need replaced...which is common and easy to do. Good luck with your restoration.

Nice.. Those old school receivers are the best.i have one from the 90's (2) channels 1 I have for inside speakers 1 for outside full surround sound all the fun stuff.. Now days I don't see that sold locally anymore..just the stupid throw away wireless crap..
@ChrisDIYerOklahoma9 жыл бұрын
fanman1981 YES! Well said. I had one exactly like this in 1983 when I was a freshman in high school. I sold it like a dumbass. So, got on eBay and found THE SAME ONE for $80. That was about two years ago. This 30 wpc Harman Kardon receiver is so buttery smooth and powerful...love it. The cheap shit they make now does not stack up. I do own a modern Harman/Kardon receiver...at 120 wpc...it is a beast of power and clean...highly rated. But, they don't make it anymore and replaced it with something not quite as good. But, paid a pretty penny for it.

I have a old NAD amp and the selector switch is cutting out the sound . I cleaned it several times with Radio Shack contact cleaner and it works for a while then starts cutting out again. I might try a different cleaner .

Nice old amps...NAD made some great equipment. Sounds like it is time to remove/replace that switch. Cleaners can only do so much to prolong the life of mechanical switches.
