"I never knew you; depart from me," are words in Matthew 7 many of us fear we will hear from Jesus. Should we live in fear that we will finally be rejected by Christ for not doing enough? Was that his intention? Or did he mean something else?
Members' Podcast: Jon and Justin talk about the importance of law/gospel distinction in the Sermon the Mount, as well as how to love and care for those with a tender conscience.

You guys hit the nail on this one! The only thing I would add to the conversation is the description of the people he's talking to on this day: Prophesy, cast out demons and perform miracles. All three of these are signs of an Apostle, and I would imagine in those days of Jesus and the apostles that if anyone was saved, it would be the 12, but as you know, Judas Iscariot was an Apostle and look how that concluded. This further explains the point he's making. Just because you appear "apostolic" doesn't mean you're saved. Just because you practice righteousness doesn't mean you are. Salvation has never been about behavior modification. It has been about broken sinners, bankrupt of any righteousness clinging to Christ and Christ alone for their salvific need.

@@brywalker7199 - Yes, it is pretty hard stuff sometimes when it comes down to THAT debate. That is if you are talking about Calvinism vs. Arminianism. I think I can provide better insight on this. Not to be prideful anything but it is something I see in many conversations that goes ignored. And with that being ignored, we have badly missed what the Bible says. For instance, in Matthew 11:20-24, Jesus pronounces woes or curses upon cities because they didn't repent. What we should see here is that Jesus delivers the blame of the void of their repentance on them. But then in verse 25, Jesus says something interesting. He prays, thanking the Father of His doing of revealing these things to infants, rather than the wise and intelligent. This is Jesus giving all glory and credit to God for the understanding they have that led to repentance. So, to conclude this. Anytime sinners reject Christ and His message. Neglect the call to the Gospel, "Repentance and resting faith in the Gospel", Jesus says it's there fault, not God's. But when sinners do come to Christ, our Lord clearly over the course of His ministry spoke in a monergestic language, giving glory to God. So, when it comes to the question, "Is God Sovereign Over Salvation or Is Man Responsible For His Sin?" The answer is both. To make this even more true, the next thing Jesus does is present a loving invitation to come to Him and find rest from the weight of the law and sin. So, this is how I approach that discussion.

I was going to ask the theocast gang if they could speak to a scripture which I sadly just read and can't find again, granted I am 3 weeks post partum with a toddler so my is mush. I read something, I thought was in Matthew where it says God can/would erase a name from the book of life. Thoughts or the right direction on this?

Thank you God for coming across your channel, I’ve been in Christ for about five months. Was introduced to the reformed side from very beginning which I thank God for! However I’ve been finding myself questioning my salvation overwhelmingly. More or so realizing I’ve deal with some sins mostly in my mind. I started waiting to see what else God would deliver me from and felt I was on a pause so asked myself is God really working in me like in the beginning. When I heard the Gospel it wasn’t by anyone but just going to buy a Bible for the first time! So it was my own self looking at is God is “working in me”. But going through your channel I reminded myself it’s not the law that motivates but the Gospel! Allows to truly rest in Christ. I keep crying seeing more videos! I was putting my own self in bondage comparing my walk to others. Or hearing how others do not deal with certain desires anymore, I asked myself why I did. But anyway Thank you Jesus!

I just want to thank you guys for this deeply thought out sermon on matthew 7. I've always thought this passage was talking to unbelievers here, and you guys really confirmed my thinking on this! It gives true believers a great assurance in Jesus! I would often hear a former pastor of mine take verses in matthew 7 out of context as if he was talking to Christians. He would make me feel that if im not on the foreign mission field preaching the gospel, then I'm not doing enough.

John 10:1-5,14,26-27 Truly truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way that man is a thief and a robber. 2But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.14 Iam the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 26but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. Only those who have a changed life by repentance are those who are Jesus's sheep and follow him. Jesus uses the word "knows" as in an intimate way just like that word is used throughout scripture. Matt 7:21-23 Why does Jesus say Depart from me I never "knew" you ye that work iniquity He's not double minded The works mentioned are works that He told us to do Matt 10:28 John 14:12 Mark 16:15-17 Paul says do works to show your repentance in Acts 26:20 Clearly they had some type of knowledge of God to do those works He doesn't say you trusted in your works He doesn't say I knew you once and you later rejected me. He says I never "knew" you (in scripture "knew" means intimately) They never changed their minds about their sinfulled life (repented) of their sins. They didn't have a personal relationship with Him. They were pointing to their works as evidence they knew Him. They believed repentance is works God didn't know them because they hadn't been regenerated, forgiven of their sins and died in their iniquity. What is the will of the Father? God wants you saved,He wants you Spirit controlled,and He wants you separated from sin. What is the will of the Father? 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4that each of you should learn to control your own body a in a way that is holy and honorable, 5not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. b The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

Amazing how many pastors get this passage wrong. Those who point to their works as evidence of their faith in Christ are lawless because they wrongly use the law to justify themselves. That's not why the law was given. As you say, it is to show us our sin.

8:00 Instead of concluding it's impossible to do what Jesus says based on unfounded reformed presuppositions you might have gone to Galatians 3 and explained how to become perfect. According to 2 Pet 2:1-14 if you can't cease from sin it's because of false teaching. What do you do with James who teaches us that God is faithful and will not tempt you beyond what you are able but with the temptations will provide a way out? Are you suggesting God is not faithful? Sin is inevitable and James and Peter are wrong? What do you do with Zachariah and Elizabeth, Job, Enoch etc.? Search with word "Righteous" or "Upright before God" in a bible app and see how many people were perfect and upright before God. Your main problem is making claims without supporting data. Stop saying stuff if it's not true.

Find me one of the men from the Old Covenant that God declared righteous and upright, who were without sin. Righteous Lot? The man who offered up his daughter to be raped, disobeyed God in fear, ran to a cave, got drunk, and impregnated his own daughters? Faithful Abraham? Who when told by God that a son would be given to him, doubted with Sarah and committed adultery with the handmaiden? How about David, the man after Gods own heart. The murderer and adulterer. The man who cries to God that his sins outnumber the hairs in his head. That guy? How about Samson? Do I even need to speak about all Samsons issues? Bro, it’s YOU who is off base.

What if your goal in life is just being good at something and useful to someone? What then if your conscience still bothers you? What about the guy that just wants to do a job and do it well? Can that person be saved too knowing that all the good works in the universe cannot save his soul? I mean I know people that are happy at their work and they treat you right and they stay healthy? Would Jesus say to any of these I never knew you even if they simply declared within this lifetime that their good works are inadequate for salvation but hoping they do something good like earn a wage support themselves and simply want to do something right in this world? What then would you tell someone that supported your work in these podcasts? What then would Jesus tell them? Why does everything have to be a surprise when we take our last breath instead of having some feedback from Heaven before we are forced to take our last breath? There are two questions in this. 1) can I know for sure Jesus will not tell me "I never knew you". But why is this the ONLY IMPORTANT QUESTION? 2) What about the value of the way we work and live today? Can we as believers know both that Jesus will both welcome us and approve of the manner we lived here too? Must we always be in the dilemma that if we get the first we cannot have the second and always have to feel bad about our works or if we feel good about our works we may not have the first?

Why do you skip RIGHT OVER the "workers of lawlessness" part ? 1 John 3:4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[b] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother." My goodness, you must have balance. For the person in unrepentant sin, they will leave this podcast comforted to continue in it. Where is the discussion of the Holy Spirit EMPOWERING us to turn from sin? We are NEW CREATURES in Christ!!!! You are peddling defacto easy-believism and you don't even realize it.
@medic4christ777

There is no balance between law and grace. If it is by grace it is no longer by works, lest grace be no longer grace. The answer to a sin problem is grace. Not law. Law does not motivate people to obey. Law is the power and strength of sin. Which is why we are not under the law. No, God is not mocked and He will deal with believers who are in rebellion. But salvation is by grace and it is a free gift. There is no “balance” of law and grace. Sorry buddy. My desire to do what is right and turn from evil is because God loves me. Fear and the law never motivated that in me. People like you never motivated that in me. In fact, people like YOU make me want to give up.

Jesus died for you when you were yet sinners. Was that in your past? For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son. Are you still an enemy? Is a sinner an enemy of God? Do you still consider yourself a sinner? Does your pastor still call you a sinner? Maybe you need a Biblical understanding of what sin is, and what righteousness is. Consider the Greek word for sin, hamartia (G266). The first letter of this word is alpha (you’ve heard of the silent h? this is the opposite. It’s not silent and yet is not even there). Anyway, the alpha is a negative particle which negates the remainder of the word. It is instructive to look at the remainder of the word so we can see what sin is not - that will give us a good idea what sin is. The remainder of the word is meros (G3313). Meros means one of the constituent parts of a whole. To sin means that you are not a part of a whole. What whole is a sinner not a part of that makes him a sinner? God with us. Sin is associated with death. Death is separation from God. Sin is what we do separate from God. Righteousness is associated with life. Life is union with God. Righteousness is what we do together with God; his strength, our resources, his purpose, credited to our account. The law of sin and death is what you do with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. These are the things of the flesh. The law of the Spirit of life is what you do with the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. If you never, by faith, yield your resources to the Spirit of God, allowing him to fulfill the righteousness of the law (of the Spirit) in you, he never knew you. The Sabbath is when you stop doing your own thing and allow God to work in and through you. It is not ceasing all work, just your work. What is the law of the Spirit? As I have loved you, love one another. He loves you in the power of the Spirit; love one another in the power of the Spirit. If you do not allow him to work in you, your righteousness will not exceed the righteousness of the pharisees, which is zero. Is that salvation by works? What about the single-talent servant?

It is ignorance to actually think a person can depart from Christ; from God. Any talk of "seperation" is only symbolic; because God is everywhere. Our physical bodies of course rot away and will not be in His presents for eternity. The argument is not that the fleshly body will remain but if there is an eternal "soul" that remains....the answer is NO. Our spirit does indeed remain forever in God's presence.
@James_no_hell
@James_no_hell 7 ай бұрын
@theimprobableone The only part of any person that Jesus will at that time say "depart from me"; is the body. Besides this is a parable...those words will not really come from Jesus. Thus is just dramatizing the separation of the physical body and the spirit. The physical body goes to the grave and rots to nothing (fire)...and the spirit goes to Heaven.

It's unbelievable that you brought up a scripture where he says he never knew you but he clearly claims that it's because of the way you're living your life because you didn't listen to what he had to say. Lawless & worker of iniquity is not saying it's okay to be a sinful person. Like you once saved always say people believe.

so salvation which is called eternal can enter and leave a person meaning it's temporary and sporatic life not eternal and the only guarantee is if we THINK we are good enough, how can we ever know if we have REPENTED ENOUGH or refused SIN ENOUGH. If he died to PAY for ALL our sins then are they not paid for ALREADY? INCLUDING the sins of the ones that do not believe, why then would God punish them if they have no sin debt? Christianity is what i was raised with and i still believe in Jesus as I can perceive Him it's hard to know anything when every one preaches you must be GOOD ENOUGH to be accepted by God and if I was GOOD ENOUGH why TF did Jesus Die for sins then?
