Departures (2008) film review - Too sentimental?

I review the 2008 Japanese film Departures, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. While many aspects of the film were praised, some critics and viewers consider the film too sentimental.

I saw it as a master craftsman providing/preserving the dignity of the deceased, cleansing and clothing the traveler, to allow the family/survivors a last chance to say goodbye to the loved one as they remembered him/her.

One of my favourite movies. It’s a story about humanity dealing with its mortality. Creating a deep respect and dignity for death and the dead. More often than not people tend to think that after death, we are just a piece of flesh deteriorating into humus… becoming food for worms as Robin Williams character, Mr Keating said in “Dead Poet Society” (another great movie). This movie speaks to me of not just mortality but also immortality… we are more than a character walking on this earth for “three scores and ten” but that there is life beyond… this life. Thanks for your review.
