Martin has always played live the main guitar riff along with a pre-recorded one to achieve a fuller sound on I Feel You, nothing wrong with doing that. Same logic as Christian playing live drums with other pre-recorded electronic percussion sounds. Here, Martin's guitar was in a different tunning, and they decided to change the guitar. The pre recorded guitar is the fifth string, ONE string only, playing A C A A A over and over, loud and simple and with special effects to help define the rhythm in a plain and constant way in a loop. Martin's live guitar is a rhythmic guitar riff playing multiple strings in A minor chord, specifically the 3rd, 4th, and 5th strings only, with the 5th one playing A C A in a different way. Check out this video below where they did not use the pre-recorded guitar, but a synth riff instead, so it is easier to distinguish the live guitar that Martin plays to understand what he does live, a rhythmic riff with multiple strings. Remember, for the pre-recorded guitar used in other tours, including Devotional and Memento Mori, they used the pre-recorded ONE STRING guitar riff along with Martin's live guitar. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJuUiX6krdeebsUsi=PnrZqMkITPMYI-kz I am a multi instrument musician, music producer with a pretty good ear, I think I will make a video explaining the difference between both the live and the pre-recorded I Feel You guitar riffs, if this doesn't clarify the confusion.

In this case, Martin’s effects probably got stuck, and the harmonizer wasn’t turned on (different tuning)…. It’s a different tuning but on the A C AAA riff

I am the guy in BLUE! What an awesome night. Once in a lifetime. Row four with my sisters. While watching this I couldn’t help but think back to 1988 and watching the Depeche Mode 101 documentary glued to the screen. Depeche Mode played our LA coliseum! Been dreaming of seeing them ever since. Now…we have. YOLO The most famous unknown band in the world

How did you NOT see them until now, if you watched 101 in 88? That's insane! How? I have never missed a concert in 2 states since I started going to concerts in 1990, at 15yo. My parents were strict about rock concerts. My first was DM and The Cure and I've never missed either of them. I'm 48 now and a grandma and my hubby and I will see Dave, Thursday in Denver. ❤ Will be number 18 for me since I like to attend multiple concerts in the same tour. ❤ I don't expect anyone to part-time groupie like me, but to miss so many great concerts? 😢 At least you went now. I hope you go to more. Will be my hubby's second DM concert because he started loving DM since we've been together. Last one was Denver 2016 or 2017... It was after Bowie passed away in Jan 2016, I know, because Dave did an absolutely GORGEOUS tribute to him. I cried. Big Bowie fans too. ❤ Anyway, glad you got to finally see them, but I would never have made it all these years without going at least once. Lol Dave is so much fun in concerts - I hope you go to more! ❤

Mishaps happen so DM gets a pass because they have been performing incredibly for over 45 years live together. They are raw talent and better than any younger artist today. They are among the best artist to date so yeah Martin is one talented individual and gets credit for showing his human side and so did the rest of the band as they came together as they always do;) ) Great job DM!

Not sure why there's people commenting negatively to this. This is a huge compliment. When you get older it's harder to perform with this same type of energy and passion. People who are older are well capable of this but it gets rarer with age due to declining physical and mental health so it's great to see them so sharp and active in great health. Especially Dave is lucky his health is as good as it is because he practically died from his drug addictions in the 90s

I’ve probably watched hundreds of hours of DM live videos in my lifetime and I’ve never once seen them have to stop and start again, that’s wild!! What a moment… That riff was definitely coming up in the wrong key though lol Absolutely loved watching them handle it. And yeah, pre-recorded bits have always been a part of DM’s love rig all the way back to the very beginning. They used to keep the tape machine running right on stage with them but moved it offstage eventually for practical reasons, so that’s nothing new. Don’t trip lol

I Feel You is in a half note lower than a normal tuned guitar, thus Martin uses a half tone lower tuned guitar for this song. It seems, he got a normal tuned guitar before the song, so it is out of tune a half note. He plays live and real time, but the original sound can not be produced exactly, so that's why he is dubbing, for a thicker sound. We, the audience need the original exact sound, they gives us. Either way, whatever tecnics they use, I have an excellent example:You only have to watch Dave perform with John Frusciante (my favorite guitarist) on Policy Of Truth, in which John finally plays the guitar notes they used to play from synthesizers. What's more; John is so bored - or so creative - (who prefers what) that he plays the rest of the guitar notes and even a few small synth notes with his guitar! So don't be so lazy Martin!!! When I first heard Depeche Mode I used to joke that they weren't real musicians, mostly because they didn't have guitars. It was all keyboard...so the joke was they started all live performances by hitting one key on a Casio that starts the pre-recorded sequences. Flash forward almost 40 years later and their live show is stopped by a 'guitar malfunction' lol. I guess they're real musicians after all.

This annoys me. Why do you need to use guitars to be a real musician? What's a 'real' musician?

If you have guitar you are a great musician? Dont think so. If you make good music you are a great musician. And DM did make..Freddie Mercury did not have any guitar and he was great musician, Michael Jackson even could not play on any instrument and he was one of greatest writing songs like from Dirty Diana to Earth song. Both are based on classical music BTW.Martin Gore hardly play on guitar but he did write songs like In your room, Barrel of a gun, Wrong, Drown, Precious, Home..these are materpieces

@@adala1007 I never said having a guitar makes you a great musician. But I was raised on 70s music, like Eagles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Rush. All of these bands have great guitar solos in their songs. Fast forward to the late 80s and videos of DM come out, People are People etc. Martin Gore has a keyboard. Nobody in the band has a guitar. And Stevie Ray Vaughan is on the airwaves playing David Bowie songs. SRV was more of a real musician than the entire band of DM. When they came out with their electronic music it just sounded so weak and synthetic. Drum machines? No thank you. But when Strangelove came out and I heard them again, I changed my mind. They sounded less like a pre recorded sequence on a Casio and more like a real band, with real drums and a more orchestral sound. I admit I was prejudiced against the new sound of modern bands, but I think you should admit a prejudice against the older bands who had guitars and real drums. And people who could play them.

Someone explained why: "@otroscar - Martin has always played live the main guitar riff along with a pre-recorded one to achieve a fuller sound on I Feel You, nothing wrong with doing that. Same logic as Christian playing live drums with other pre-recorded electronic percussion sounds. Here, the pre-recorded guitar went down in the tuning right after it started and seemed like it created some confusion, and they decided to change the guitar."

The show is still good, saw them in Amsterdam, and yeah, of course there are parts pre-recorded (how would 3 persons being able to pull off all that sound). They are still likeable, but I have to say that the real Depeche Mode (at least in my definition of real) is long, long gone. They are more or less rockers now, performers. It is not about art and beauty anymore. For me they might as well call it a day.

What are you talking about? Depeche Mode has been using pre-recorded elements since their beginnings. These are and have always been an essential, defining part of their music.

😂 You DM fans/fools paying big $$ upto $1,000 for playback/backing tracks on guitar? Wow. This is basically vocals over preset time signatures for most is the string section. LOL!!! That’s why better to watch concerts for free on KZbin with a 52” tv and sit back eating/drinking what you want and no waiting for long bathroom lines.
