DM Mode’s most creative period was due to Martin Gore’s songwriting, Dave Gahan’s vocals, and from 1982-1995 with Alan Wilder’s skills as a musician, arranger and producer. Alan deserves credit for all his contributions during period, but without Gore and Gahan no one would know who Alan was.

yes, we know... Recoil - not a big fan. I love(d) Alan, I'd still love to see him back in the band. However, I know that DM could not exist without Martin's music and Dave's frontman act, while it DID/DOES live without Alan and, now, Fletch.

When I see Alan, I measure how much he missed to dM. Though the band has kept on doing some good albums, I deeply think its soul and style disappeared after SOFAD. As a keyboard player and drummer, his contribution to the sound of dM would have been incredible. A French listener since 87 ;-)

Oh my gosh such a nice guy. Watching interviews with Alan he is only really animated when talking about or playing music. A true musician...one who it seems was unappreciated by the rest of the band. How could they have let him go? SMFH.

What Alan did with I Want You Now is yet another example of how much of an influence he had on all of their best music. Him leaving was like taking all the bacon out of a cheeseburger. The Devotional Tour version of Everything Counts is still the hardest track in that whole set 🔥🔥

He didn't think he was appreciated after all the work he did for the devotional tour and felt he wasn't getting any deserved recognition working in the studio producing and playing as a member of the band. Recoil didn't really have any bearing on his decision to leave DM.

If you watch the making of the album from 1985, the boys are all in the studio, then suddenly Martin and Dave decide to go on holiday, leaving Alan to finish the rest of the album on his own. Plus Fletch and him got into physical fights backstage, according to Dave. It's no wonder he left, really.
