This song in Hammersmith, 1982 was pure art. Fletch, Martin and Alan giving their best with the "tape drummer" at the center of stage. The audience was in front of one of the greatest and pure electronic sound of this decade. God knows how much I wanted to be there, but I was only 9 years old, far away from there.

Hoy no aparece nada igual a ABF,ni cerca... Es una obra inoxidable.Incomparable.Álbum delicado y romántico.Juvenil ,inocente pero no "soso",también fuerte y profundo.Una explosión "goreana".

I for one love A Broken Frame. It was my first DM album, back on cassette. It's uneven as hell, but there are some real gems in there. Right out of the gates, Leave In Silence showcases their new dark style (well, not entirely new, Tora is dark as hell, the extended Just Can't Get Enough, etc), and has that crazy generative synth solo that I still can't believe that Alan didn't write. Monument is one of my favorite songs ever. Just insane. Satellite is just after that. Maybe before it. They are both just so good. Shouldn't have done that, Sun and the Rainfall, Nothing to Fear. Mind blown. Even My Secret Garden has so many things going for it, was almost there. The only thing that let this album down is its unevenness, specifically the bubblegum tracks that don't fit here and some lackluster production. Like, why does Photograph of You sound like it was tossed off in a few hours, could have been decent. I have to be honest: it's See You and Meaning Of Love that kill the mood. I can't even say I know what it is abut them. They both have fantastic bouncy Danial Miller bass lines, some great production in them, but they just come off cheesy/cringey, don't fit at all. I get that See You was written well before the others, and Martin maybe hadn't found his footing yet, wasn't sure what the market could bear. And Meaning Of Love is actually a banger, so I don't get why I still reel away from it. If only they had just taken some of these songs out, A Broken Frame would be recognized as the classic that I know it to be. Daniel Miller, especially, at his best. DM moved from entirely classic analog synths and tape loops to mostly samples after this (albeit with that analog filter still), so this album is a gem for analog purists/fanboys, old school synth-pop with a dark tinge.

I find it very impressive that this song comes from Martin's first self-written album. Back then, nobody had any idea what great songs he would write in the future. His first masterpiece. The melody of the bridge reminds me of Behind The Wheel.

One of the most brilliant track from Martin, the key changes are so sophisticated, completely out of the pop schemes, explaining why the interpretation on piano is so enjoyable.

Always loved the first three albums. As said in the video - Melodies. Nothing To Fear is a big moment in Martins songwriting catalogue. A big favourite of mine since i heard it the first time as a 11 year old boy. If you listen on melodies, A Broken Frame is truly a gem. Leave In Silence and Nothing To Fear is why i become a DM fan.

"A Broken Frame" took hold of me in a way "Speak and Spell" did not, though I was somewhat a fan. The early eighties were a very politically dark time. We were young, our whole lives in front of us, but the grown-ups(?) were playing games with the world's, and our, future. Much of the mood and feeling of "A Broken Frame" resonated with the time. People say it's not a cohesive album, but nothing was cohesive at the time. The band, the politics, our young selves; we were all over the map. For me, there was comfort in the music recognizing the angst, energy and hope we had. "All I wanted to do was see you again...," in case the world ended, prretty much summed it up. The instrumentals with vocal songs were a good mix allowed for the album (US) Your own thoughts and feelings to wander within the music between the songs dark or hopeful. "A Broken Frame" may not be part of the defining canon of Depeche Mode, but it cemented my growing up with the band, as part of the soundtrack of my life.

Brilliant!! Sorry but I had to pause your video half way through to put the album on to track four to remind myself just how good this is. I remember when I first listened to a broken frame having to skip back at least three times to listen to it over again. Listening to you play this puts this into a different class and sounds like a timeless classical piece from a bygone era, so different to the original 80s synth version obviously but it’s still so recognisable. Thankyou for your DM passion!!

Great job. This is a favourite track and has made its way onto all of my DM mix tapes and playlists since I was teenager in the 80s. But this is the first time I've seen it broken down and analyzed as a composition. Now I understand why it's had such strong staying power! It really quite amazing. Thanks for doing this video..

Beautiful, buuuut!… “The sun and the rainfall” at the end of the album. Man, this song made me change my whole concept about music, emotions and mind structures. Accustomed to the powerful and fun endings of pop LPs of the time, this album ends with this sad and beautiful song, but with a positive message… “it must change.” They were the 80s, Thacher and Malvinas, Cold War and Chernobyl... We were in our adolescence, with profound political changes, changes in values and technology as a promise of the future and freedom. The rest is History. We have already learned that everything "must change... over and over again" to return to the same place. That's why, every time I listen to A Broken Frame, I can only feel again that naive innocence that shaped the future “me”...

I only heard this track for the first time justover a year ago, when I really deep dived all their albums and DM really became the backbone and guide through a very tough time. I love classic video game tunes, the old school chiptunes from my youth. This tune has a melody that, reminds me of a video game, and I think that lovely recall it gives me is enhanced by the type of sounds from the synths used at the time. Those early 80s sounds. I could not agree more with your musical analysis. The song has an adventurous spirit to it. Its lively, like you're setting forth on something. But, there is a dramatic key change and darkening lull midway, before a heightened key change back to the main melody geniusly uplifts it again. Its one of those tracks that will always remind me of a certain recent point and time and phase of life, and I thank the song for it. Fantastic interpretation here. Those extra sprinklings you splash out throughout are majestic and classy.

I absolutely agree, it's a great song in many ways and indeed pretty complex chord wise. I may be wrong but I think it's 13 different chords or something similar(?) I remember playing this one live at a school gig back in 1984, and it went down pretty well. Besides this one there's a few really good songs from this period, Leave in silence, Oberkorn (the 12 inch) Shouldn't have done that.
