I felt Memento Mori acted as a modern day Violator for them. It had hits, and sort of brought Depeche back into recent news. So a follow up album would maybe stand in the same shoes as SF&D

@@discjockeyeIt's also the first time Martin wrote songs with a friend. It was meant to be a side project. But Martin asked his friend if he could use them for the new dm album.

Nah, I feel like Memento Mori got them back on track, even though Spirit was pretty alright to me.

you can tell there was tension in the band at the time. unlike pretty much every album prior, none of the martin demos sound that much like their final results. the band and its associates have said that some of these songs never reached their full potential and i completely agree. the good bits of each song probably got argued over and changed for the worse, while the less good bits appear to be left in the final version. the perfect duo of martin and alan seems to have broken here. its a shame. nevertheless, sofad is one of their best albums

Not sure what you mean. These demos are kept very pared down basic ready to be worked up in the studio, which they really did, SOFAD is maybe their best produced album. Any tension mustve been resolved enough to turn out a great album that to me sounds its full potential. Alan seemed to believe in it enough to want go out on a high with it.
