You chose a fantastic topic to discuss in this episode! It's so true isn't it!? That nothing else quite creates a true Depeche Mode experience other than the band members themselves when they come together. Even though other members have had a huge impact and contribution, it really is Gore and Gahan that are the very soul of the band. Listening to you made me realize that it's been years since I listened to Gahan's solo work (which I do love by the way) but it's only Depeche Mode that I faithfully come back to again and again. It's just pure magic and nothing can replace it! On a different note, I was utterly flattered to hear that you've enjoyed the AI songs I made enough to actually consider making a playlist of them! Aww! As you might have noticed, each song has a different "percentage" of Gahan's voice. I can't know for certain, but my guess is that AI generates the voices by combining several famous singers it has trained upon (from the desired genre) in varying degrees to create a "unique" voice that is never 100% of any one particular singer. In the songs where Gahan's voice is almost pure, it just happened to generate a very high percentage of his voice where in others you can only hear a lingering resemblance to Gahan. I could imagine that this alone would kind of ruin listening to the playlist in hopes for a Depeche Mode type of experience because the voices all sound kind of different. And of course, the songs fall short of achieving true Depeche Mode quality in so many other ways as well. The beauty of these types of songs is much more about a) marveling at the technology itself b) getting into the brain of a fellow Depeche Mode fan. Whilst people creating these AI songs may not be able to play synths or compose a song, they know what they like when they hear it and the end result will be based on that personal taste. I've been listening to many different creators making Depeche Mode inspired AI songs on KZbin and SoundCloud and you really can hear how each creator has their own unique take on DM. At the end of the day, the creation of an AI song is all about building up a song based on personal choices. Which clips to accept, which to reject. Which sections to regenerate, which to leave alone. And while my taste is based on the dark and moody melodies of Depeche Mode's music, some other creators might hone in on the noisier harsher stuff whilst others go for the poppy danceable side of DM's early work. It's really fascinating to hear the differences!

AI should be doing the grunt work so people will have time to make art. Not the other way around.

This is a popular phrase that has been going around a lot on social media. Although it holds true in some ways, it's flawed in that it completely overlooks the following scenario: What if someone would love nothing more than to be able to "make art" but just cannot for whatever reason. Perhaps they have a disability, or don't have the skills, the talent or their life situation blocks them from being able to invest time and money into learning how. However they do have a vision and they've got the ideas - they just don't have a way to implement them. Then along comes AI offering new possibilities for them to finally fulfill these dreams and ideas. For me, AI has been exactly that. A dream come true in finally being able to express myself musically and has brought me much happiness and actually sparked my creativity. AI is not all bad.

I love Alan and what he did for DM but who`s to say had he of stayed Ultra, 100% ,would of been better, it could of been a pig of an album and that`s the thing we don`t know. in actual fact the Exciter album wanted a light, accoustic guitar feel and thats not what Alan is good at at all so conflics come for sure. Every band has a peak DM have been blessed to have had a few peaks so even had Alan of stayed the drop off would still of come and happened. He left the band in 1994, in 2024 yep 30 years later they are bigger than ever, made a brilliant album and had the biggest tour, that can`t happen if you r a rubbish band post Alan. I know many fans that have become fans due to the post Alan albums. I`d love to see Alan join up again.but hay lets give the others a bit of credit for what they have done as it`s amazing.

Unsound methods would of been ace with Dave singing

In my opinion only I`m not into Dave`s solo stuff. I find it a bit too blusey and thats the side of DM I don`t like. A couple of tracks I like. In fact there`s not much of Martin`s and Alan`s solo stuff that I think is brilliant. The magic was or is the collective of those elements working together. The Humanist track umm, I`m not taken with it, prob not listen to it again. Regarding Momento Mori, yes it is a brillant album, best album since sofad imoo.

For me Alan is absolutely at the core of any real depeche mode music. That went away in 1994 or whatever and everything since misses the target (despite sounding close). A few songs definitely hit the mark (it's no good, some playing the angel stuff, etc), but for the most part, the albums don't come close. And the live shows.... nah. they're basically a depeche mode cover band now. It's a shame really. Alan really was the ingredient that put it all together.

Don`t you think that Momento Mori is a masterpeice?. It`s a future classic for sure. I honestly can`t say that about the last few DM albums. but MM is a top top album.

@@easytigeruk123456789 I think it’s pretty good. Good for an “old band”. People are good is a great song. They hit a home run with that one. Couple other songs are good too. But for me it doesn’t come close to music for the masses or violator or even construction time again.

ugh the AI "music" talk is pretty gross and depressing. This tech, and people making songs with it, is just the antithesis of what a music lover or DM fan values. It is the complete undoing of the art that humans make.
