I visited this ballpark just two months ago and I gotta say, while there was a lot I loved about it, it is in desperate need of a renovation. The seats down the line point toward the outfield, meaning that you have to either position yourself on the edge of your seat, or you need to have your neck crooked for 2-3 hours to watch the game. The concourse is pretty dated and ugly. The outfield seats are completely uncovered, meaning that the sun is bearing down on you (SoCal weather is gorgeous, but after a while you tend to get baked out there. A nice canopy over the exposed seats would go a long way). But I feel like the stadium has good bones. I love the rock pile+waterfall. The amenities are great (love those helmet nachos), and they have a lot of great things do and see around the concourse. I think it's salvageable with a renovation. Maybe do it and have them back at the old Chavez Ravine for a season so that there's no awkward mid-construction season where half the seats are blocked off.

Oh wow, is it still that way? When I went to my only game there in 2000 I sat to the side of 1B and was looking directly at the right fielder the whole game. To see home plate we had to turn and look over our left shoulders. Most awkward seating I had ever experienced. I assumed it was that way because they had not reconfigured the seats after football.

I grew up in Anaheim in the late sixties and seventies with the Angels when they had Fregosi, Knoop etc. I really miss the old Big A scoreboard out there which was very cool. I remember watching Harmon Killebrew hit a home run and nearly smacking a car parked beyond the fence. Funny that you showed the collapsed newer scoreboard on the addition never mentioning it was because of an earthquake. Not sure what you mean about an outdated upper deck. I've been to many MLB parks and its the same as any of those.

I grew up going to Angel Stadium! I never saw its original form, it was multipurpose first in my childhoold, but i loved it. It wasnt polished or fancy, didnt really have extra ammenities besides concession stands, maybe even grimey in its feel, but thays what I loved about it. It didnt feel.clean and to me that was baseball! If your uniform wasnt dirty at the end of the game, you didnt have a good game. The Stadium personified baseball getting dirty to me. That doesnt fly anymore these days for a stadium, and Id take Angels stadium now over then for today. But I loved 80s and 90s Anaheim Stadium. I do think for the outfield scenery, they should move the Big A firther down the freeway so its visible off in the distance in left center field. Right now its hidden outt of sight

I think the Stadium is still good for the most part. Just that dead zone is the glaring issue, but if they wanted - they can gut all the seating and completely redo it all maybe into a new configuration. Also a gutting of some of the interior of the ballpark where age is showing to do major repairs of pipes, electrical lines, etc. I think the big thing for it would be a Tram extension from Disneyland and a change to it's parking lot to a parking structure so that it's more dead area outside the park can be converted for non-Baseball use while updating the Outfield look.

Originally it was ANAHEIM Stadium thus, the Big A. The first stadium they played in as an MLB team was Wrigley Field - this one in LA. The Rams came to Anaheim because they wanted luxury suites at the Coliseum. The Coliseum commission said no. Later, when the Raiders were playing at the Coliseum, Al Davis ALSO wanted luxury suites and (supposedly) was given permission to do so and was in the process of clearing several top rows of seats before being told to stop. This led to the Raiders moving back to Oakland. The 'yellow line home run' was an inexplicable by-product of the 70s cookie cutter stadiums of the upper mid-west. I NEVER understood it - STILL don't understand it. The golf thing was "Stadium Links". We hosted two at Globe Life Field when I worked for the Rangers. The name Los Angeles Angels was the brain-dead child of owner Arte Moreno. He OBVIOUSLY doesn't understand the history of his own team. They dropped LA when they moved to Anaheim - couldn't WAIT to drop LA from the name as they felt like a red headed step child of LA. The Dodgers were King and the Angels were mere court jesters. He should have left good enough alone and called them what they are...Anaheim Angels.
@GregoryFariss
@GregoryFariss Жыл бұрын
The Los Angeles name change were purely financial. Angles were at the bottom of revenue even though being in the largest MLB market. Lakers Kings,Rams and Chargers use/used LA even when not playing in the city.
@careyconley4690
@careyconley4690 Жыл бұрын
@@GregoryFariss LA is the SECOND largest market behind NYC. Changing the name BACK to the LA Angels was a SMART move, something they should NEVER have changed from in the first place. Calling them the "California" Angels was DUMB, and either folks outside of Anaheim don't know where that is, or simply believe it to be an LA suburb. You don't play in the second largest media market in the nation and REMOVE its name from your team! Reverting to LA Angels added MILLIONS to the team's brand/valuation.

There is another stadium that has led three lives, here in Atlanta! 1. Centennial Olympic Stadium - the central stadium for the 1996 Olympic Games. 2. Turner Field - home of the Atlanta Braves from 1997 thru 2016. The original stadium design incorporated the conversion to a baseball stadium. 3. Center Parc Stadium - the football stadium for Georgia State University, first used in 2017 after its conversion.

Yes, there were a little over 3,000 temporary seats brought in for the 1967 All-Star Game, and if you look at the boxscore for that game, you'll see that the attendance was 46,309. Anaheim Stadium also hosted the World Football League's Southern California Sun in 1974-75. I'm not sure if extra seats were made available for the football games.

Stadiums like this and Kaufman and Dodger Stadium are aging poorly because they have parking lots around them. Conversely, Comerica Park (which does have a lot of parking around it) is aging better as it is still in a urban zone and some of the surrounding parking lots are (hopefully) being redone as "District Detroit". Make it easy to park, but also make it easy to walk to the stadium and do something before or after the game.
@thephantomeagle2
@thephantomeagle2 Жыл бұрын
Comerica also has two parking ramps, one of which connects directly to the ballpark. On top of that, the Lions play across the street, and the Pistons and Red Wings are blocks away. They'll never have any issues with parking, even if they need to do major work on either parking ramp since the Ford Field(Lions), and Little Caesars Arena parking are available if the Lions, Red Wings or Pistons aren't playing. This means that they can use the other lots if needed. The same is true for the other teams. Parking and access is one of the best benefits of having all four major sports teams within blocks of each others. On top of that the Qline trolley line is across the parking lot from Comerica. That means that it's easy for people who live along Woodward Avenue to get to the ballpark, Ford Field, and LCA.

@@MikeyKaos716 That is exactly with Detroit is "reportedly" doing now in what they call "District Detroit". Even without it, it is still only a 5 minute walk to Greektown or a 10 minute walk to the main part of downtown (Campus Martius). And Midtown just north of it has grown in very well in the last 20 years, with lots of restaurants within walking distance. Rare case of organic growth around a stadium after it has been built.

Team needs a Green Monster, ivy on bricks, something that makes people think hey Angels baseball is on. I can’t wait to see the red infield or the ball hit into the Angels corner in sort of LCF as it caroms in who knows what direction. The Rally Monkey. A shower in the bleachers like in US Cellular Field. An outfield wall in right field like the angled part of RF in Ebbets Field or an overhang. A ballpark for triples.

You mentioned the stadium being open during the 90s renovation, but it was the same in the late 70s when they were enclosing it for the Rams. Also, it's more likely the Angels will build a new stadium, rather than renovate this thing again. The question is whether or not it will stay in Anaheim. I've read Long Beach is a possibility.

I went to what was called Anaheim Stadium, for the first time, in Sept 1988. On our way from San Diego after I graduated from Marine Corps Bootcamp, we stopped at the stadium and I bought tickets to watch the Angels vs the Royals. When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, if I had some time off, I’d drive up and watch a game. The last game I saw there was in 1993, when Nolan Ryan made his last start vs the Angels. I took the afternoon off from the mortgage company I worked for in Tustin. I paid $3 to sit in the left field upper deck seats. I moved out of California ten years later, never having returned to see the new configuration and name change. Now I live up in Minnesota, and I enjoy going to Target Field a few times a year.

I can relate to many of these comments because I also grew up near here a long time ago. Go Halos! I wish the narrator had mentioned the view of the 57 freeway that's visible on TV. Does any other MLB stadium have that feature?

They're going to do a major renovation. It will update the look and feel, bring in modern touches and new features while also keeping the classic feel. It really just needs to shed off that Disney ownership look. Angles can also add a district and hotel in phases. This is completely do able with a new agreement for construction.

All versions of Yankee Stadium & Citi Field also fall into this category as well because with the first version of Yankee Stadium, it was home of the NY Giants in addition to the Yankees. When the second version of Yankee Stadium was built, it was built exclusively for baseball. With the current version of Yankee Stadium, it is home to NYCFC of MLS along with the Yankees & NYCFC also plays a few games per season at Citi Field. This will end in 2027 when NYCFC will move into a soccer specific stadium in Queens & both Yankee Stadium & Citi Field will revert back to having baseball as the main attraction.

One thing you forget to mention KLAA AM 830 their radio station they own is located outside in right field would have to be moved if they left. Roger lodge hosts their afternoon drive time show the sports lodge wide what would happen to that? So if anything were to happen to the big a, the radio station would go along with it.

Being from Orange County, I'm proud of Angel Stadium, because it should be as bad as the Oakland Coliseum or old Candlestick Park, but it's actually half-way decent looking in spite of its dual-purpose history.
