Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, or addiction?
Discover the co-occurring disorders of addiction.
ABOUT THE LIVE EVENT:
Depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health issues often push us to adopt negative coping mechanisms-including addictive behaviors.
The relationship between these mental health conditions and addiction goes two ways; these illnesses can trigger addiction, but also, addiction can lead someone to develop depression or anxiety.
The first step in identifying & treating addiction is understanding its causes & effects.
Few know this better than Dr. Kristy Lamb. Dr. Lamb is double board certified in family medicine & psychiatry. She focuses on the art of emotional healing by using compassion, coupled with her clinical expertise, to guide her clients toward unlocking their full potential.
Discover the role that depression, anxiety, trauma/PTSD, bipolar disorder, & more play in the onset of addictive behaviors.
Don't miss this eye-opening information, straight from one of the best psychiatrists in the country.

I always wondered why i would continuously torture myself with hangovers ,,i have a theory i was unconsciously retraumatising myself .only when i gave up alcohol i realised what trauma ide been through as a baby into adulthood .ive had a torturous life but ile find a purpose in helping others understand there addictions , the ones living it are "the experts" ,but only once you give up addictions and do the introspection . Im dealing with a deep grief for the life i could of had ,depression and anxiety are the opposite of what you need to live in this world . Thanks Dr Kristy for the great info .

My now 21 year old daughter self medicated her anxiety and depression from 8th grade through her first year in college. Her drugs of choice were marijuana and alcohol. For this entire time she was under the care of a psychiatrist and a talk therapist. No one would take her drug use seriously. Due to her age I was always reassured that “she’s a teenager, teens smoke weed and drink”. It wasn’t until I researched the idea of dual diagnosis that we found an appropriate treatment program that addressed both her mental health diagnosis and addictive personality traits that she was successful
@Mtz2604
@Mtz2604 4 жыл бұрын
I consider that an addiction sould be treated as a dual diagnosis always. Why a person would go from recreational use to addiction without having any sort of psychological or psychiatric (if not both) condition? People use different ways to self harm as maladaptive ways to cope with life, emotions and our cognition. Drugs is just another way to scape from what is causing that mental distress. If people receive the chance of heal their bodies from the abused substances and their minds from the conditions that might be lurking in one's mind, the chances to relapse are lower.

People who think that substance abuse is the problem are wrong. The problem is the underlying trauma. Fix the trauma, the addiction will get better. Not the other way around.

Excellent explanation of the interplay between anxiety and addiction! I appreciated how she emphasized the importance of therapy to tease out all these issues and help the person tolerate feelings. No Magic’s pills or quick fixes but rather she emphasized a working through of the feelings that were avoided and numbed. I really appreciated her approach of seeing the feelings, the trauma, and the addiction as all connected. Having compassion about where the patient is at and how willing or motivated they are to change was very helpful. Too often as caregivers, therapists, parents, we blame ourselves for the choices which others make concerning their lives.

Well said! So many variables contributing to the restlessness & anxiety majority exhibit. Main aspect is the lack of solution based reflection. Majority feel entitled to their health, freedom, good fortune etc. Even simply reflecting on our eyesight & full functioning limbs (not being paralyzed) is unheard of in our society. Everything has become a meaningless entitlement...even the paramount life aspects. Time to unite and evolve before it's too late

I had a hormonal imbalance called high cortisol for 25 years starting in the 1990s, i did not have medical insurance at the time or the internet. The condition would not let me sleep no matter what I did. After trying every herb I could find that I thought would help me sleep did not work I started using medication. The medication didn't work very long, eventually I started using opiates . Which led to heroin addiction and then methadone which I stayed on for 15 years at a high dose, but it did make me sleep. When in finally found out it was indeed hormonal and the cure was an herb i cured it myself . It all goes back to not having medical insurance in the 1990s. Most drug addiction go back to situations like this, self medicating do to the lack of good medical treatment in this country. Without good doctors willing to treat low income patients properly with real diagnosis and real treatment the drug use is only going to continue.

Not with Heroin but BDP, MDD, RDD, PMDD and C-PTSD... Substance abuse and addiction has been rolling in both sides of my family. Mood disorders, domestic violence, negligence, you name it. I've saw the struggle my brother had with addiction (different drugs, alcohol and nicotine) and for ever I've been traumatized to touch any recreational drug, modulate my alcohol consume (never been drunk) and I cannot take alcohol since 3 years ago and for ever now... And never tried cigarettes. I use my prescription meds as doctor says because I'm afraid to fall into abuse. Has hur my family in such a terrible way. I feel your struggles and I hope in God (I totally respect what your beliefs) with all my heart you can find the help and support you deserve!

I am reminded of the Simpsons where Homer accuses Marge of having a gambling problem. Marge says," Oh my god, I have a problem. I need professional help." Homer says, " No no, that'll cost too much. Just don't do it any more." In the end, that's the only solution, and the goal of all therapy.

when depression/ psychotic events are long term and pills fail to treat it - depression/ schizophrenia / chronic fatigue could be down to the instability of head so called craniocervical instability. If you are hypermobile ( check what Beighton scale is) then more than sure your ilness is down to it. The best option is to buy cervical collar . Aspen Vista seems to me be the best. Please ,please check what EDS is and what craniocervical instsbility is. Due to poor oxygen levels ,depression, schizophrenia occurs and pills do not help.

I have anti-social personality disorder and bipolar 1. I first noticed I was different than other people in 4th grade. We had a special needs student in our class and no one would ever talk to him. I knew he was desperate for companionship. I would rub a gummy bear in the dirt outside and then hand it to him. He would eat it and it would make him happy. it also made me happy for the first time in my life. Now I get angry when people laugh at movies, or show any type of emotion. I isolate myself from the world because I hate everyone. No one will ever notice I'm any different than anyone else though. Theres no cure for my illness but its supposably treatable, can you tell me how to get treatment?
