Depression is a serious mental health disorder characterized by perpetual feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities. It affects nearly twice as many women as men and can be caused by various factors, including grief, medical conditions, and substance withdrawal. Diagnosis depends on etiology, severity, and duration.
Brain Impact
Depression affects the amygdala and hippocampus, with the hippocampus shrinking in size depending on the duration of depression.
Symptoms
- Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness
- Loss of interest in activities
- Changes in appetite and sleep patterns
- Fatigue and lethargy
- Recurrent thoughts of death and suicide attempts
Treatment
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was introduced in 1938 but is now only considered when medications don't work.
Antidepressants work by reducing symptoms, but there is no cure for depression.
80% of depressed people can recover without medication, but it's difficult to determine who needs treatment.
Medications target neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which regulate mood, pleasure, and motivation.
How Antidepressants Work
Selective reuptake inhibitors block the reabsorption of neurotransmitters, allowing them to remain in the synaptic cleft for longer.
This prolongs the time for other neurons to communicate with them.
Sleep and Depression
Sleep is a natural antidepressant, especially dream sleep.
Depressed people start dreaming immediately after falling asleep, whereas non-depressed people start dreaming after 2 hours.
Overall, depression is a complex condition that requires a comprehensive approach to treatment, including therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. While antidepressants can help alleviate symptoms, they are not a cure, and more research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of depression.
