Thank you for speaking to it as Mental Anguish, not mental illness, Joni. Dr. Rutland’s story has only validated what I’ve been trying to get people to understand for years . So much dismissing and devaluing that has gone on for people, especially at the hands of believers wielding scriptures as a battering ram rather than as empathetic fellow journeyers.

This is so enlightening and important. My father went through terrible depression for many years. My mother and we five kids I am ashamed to say gave him so little support and understanding. The professionals and doctors back then had awful drugs to offer or electroshock therapy in the 70’s. He is now 95 and his body so accustomed to the Zoloft he is still on it. I praise God he got saved in his 80’s!

Dear Joni, I am new to your show. I really enjoy the content and the guests you have on such as Phil Driscoll and Dr. Rutland. Dr. Rutland was the president of the university I attended in the 90's. I never knew this about him. I only knew he was a great man of God and gifted speaker. It really touches me since I have had struggles with depression too. It was great to see him and hear him speak after all these years! P.S. I am sorry for the loss of your husband. Thank you for continuing your very incredible ministry. Lord bless you

Battling! I can identify with that separation by feeling as if you are NOT like everyone and there’s a barrier around you. I can recall specifically while standing in a grocery line, I looked at the front of a magazine that had a smiling woman holding a cake and thinking …..”She’s probably such a good person, NOT like me.” It is a horrible and lonely feeling. I recognized those feelings that I couldn’t explain as a small child. At that time I was holding a secret from something that had been “being done” to me that I didn’t understand, but knew the responsibility of my family was resting on me.. I went into it again after the difficult birth of my first and only baby. I realized then that I had suffered depression as a child. Maybe my story could help to recognize in children. I kept it in and became an over achiever and wore the happiest mask I could. Thank you for sharing this story and may God bless.✝️

Wow, this is so amazing and beautiful. Thank you all for making this testimony known. I grew up in a Methodist Church and the reason I left it as a young girl was because I started attending a ministry that was strong in the gifts of the Spirit! I believed in tongues and all of of the 9 gifts and so desired to begin with tongues as a young woman, newly coming to Messiah. I was led to tongues and truly blessed...this was in the 70's. When I went to share the excitement of it and my experience, the Methodist minister was so negative and against it. He wouldn't even look at the Scriptures that support it, so I knew I could not stay in that church. I wasn't learned enough in it and strong enough to stay and cause change. The Lord led me on another path and I became very involved in the ministry that taught about the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit they were very strong in this. Fast forwarding to today, I see such a need in many churches and ministries to come into the fullness of walking in the Spirit and making sure they are born of the Spirit and baptized. I think because of the misuse of these things in the spiritual realm and that the enemy has infiltrated, many are afraid to step out in faith, that it might get out of order...and afraid to just ask, as you shared earlier. There is a Scripture that talks about walking in Spirit and in Truth. Many are seeing that we need both and we need both in balance! Every group seems to be out of balance in the sense that they are strong in one area, but weak in another. I pray that all of YAH's true people will experience all He has for them and come into truly walking an obedient and HolySpirit led life. I pray that we continue to seek him with a pure heart in humility and willingness to learn. I thank Him that speaking in tongues builds us up in the inner man, as the Bible says. May we be built up in Him in all the ways of His Way. ❤🙏🔥

That suicidal spirit is an abominable subtle lurking dark presence. It is absolutely real. Only the precious blood of JESUS kept me because I dealt with this spirit from the time I was 8 years old. I'd experienced so much at that age. My father moved out of state, my mother was broken 💔 and began drinking which wasn't her m.o., my sister was a baby so she wasn't aware of all that was going on. I developed an eating disorder, I was molested by a family member, and there was a Church around the corner from me where they were always giving free lunches and they talked to me about the LORD. I got water baptized Praise Jesus. 🙌 🙏 There was a lot of abuses that I incurred physically, mentally, sexually, verbally, emotionally and I got placed in foster care. I could hear a lot of suggestions 🤔 to hurt myself but they were all in my voice. I know now that the LORD was letting me know that something was wrong with me although I couldn't necessarily convey it in professional jargon, yet I knew. The deep rejection, fear, trauma, and self-hatred was very present. I remember being in 4th or 5th grade right before going into foster care. There were these 2 boys that were really nice to me and at that particular time because my mom was so broken 💔 this wasn't her regular character but I was sent to school disheveled & unkempt, I also was being bullied because of this and I remember just wanting to run away and die. So this boy I remember his name was Matthew and his brother's name was Mark. Matthew had stood up for me and told the other kids to not treat me like that and what they were doing & saying to me and about me was mean. I was crying because I was embarrassed, but I kissed Matthew on the cheek because he was genuinely nice to me. Unfortunately some of the students were taunting me saying I was "fast" and my teacher absolutely had no wisdom and she labeled me "aggressive" which just added to my 💔 brokenness. I've forgiven her within the last 10 years because I do recognize that the Enemy of our souls wrote that evil script to destroy me personally, it was definitely him speaking. 😢 😔 I'm skipping forward the Holy Spirit fell on me when I was living with my dad at this Church that a coworker invited us to. The pastor called me his little dancing girl because the Holy Spirit fire 🔥 had me dancing all over the Church. I have to let you know that unfortunately I experienced more mockery, rejection, bullying in Junior High and High School. You know the LORD is so wonderful and how He takes the foolish things to confound the wise. Its so incredibly interesting to me how the LORD uses things that we can relate to outside of the box and exactly where we live to help us understand. My Mother used to watch the stories *(soap 🧼 operas) so did I, it was a way to escape different things in my life that I couldn't deal with. Anyways, there was this particular main character "Vicki" she was very kind, empathetic, and family oriented. However, she started having these so called premonitions but they were actually memories that her mind covered up because they were too traumatic for her to process. So basically she ended up "splitting" in her personality. Ergo she had multiple personalities that had specific orders to implement. Apparently due to her having been controlled, manipulated, & molested by her father and other men he allowed to abuse her, these issues lay dormant within her psyche. Now in reality we understand that these are demons waiting to manifest. However, from the perspective of the story their job is to protect "Vicki" from further trauma. However, spirits and their manifestations are fluid. So anyways I remember saying in my mind to the LORD that I see myself in a lot of ways like "Vicki" because her so called "alters" did the cleanup work for her because she couldn't face all the pain and shame. Serious, its like one of her personalities loathed being touched, she's very mechanical, but one could see that she was very angry, stringent, and exhibits no emotions, another one was very promiscuous, one was childlike meek & trusting, all these various characteristics working. I know that the LORD showed me myself to help me understand. You see He's so merciful, kind, compassionate although we're so undeserving. LOVE is Who HE Is. I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at 22 years old. I can't lie to you and say that I hadn't still experienced cycles with this spirit of suicide because I'd be lying to you. And I also want to encourage you that even though the cycles come the LORD is greater because as Paul stated, "In our weaknesses we're made strong because of the LORD, He's indeed 💪 our strength." I've experienced being in a mental hospital several times But GOD is still GOD, He's on the throne of my life, not just Savior but also LORD. Sometimes, there's a need for medication 💊 for whatever imbalances are present, and there's absolutely no shame because His Love for us is mind-blowing we can't even begin to comprehend the depths and heights of it. Also, its very critical that we forgive we can't do this in our own strength and dead works, we need the power of the Holy Spirit to help us. Regardless of how 🤔 many times we have to scream into a pillow, cry on the floor it doesn't matter because the LORD will help us, He's our Deliverance, He's a mind regulator and a heart fixer. And also I absolutely know what it is to suffer when guilt, condemnation, self hatred, being a co-conspirator with others that really don't like you, I've done it. But I'll tell you one thing unequivocally that the LORD because He loves you won't allow you to fit in. I tried 😪 so many times but its because He wants you to stand out for His Glory, you're not meant to be like someone else, we're His unique masterpieces. He'll teach you how to love yourself because when you're loving yourself in the right context then you're simultaneously loving Him. We tend to think that if we try adding punishment to ourselves that we're expressing how unworthy we are. Its about what JESUS did 🙌 not us, He already overpaid so why do we try to pay what He already paid, as if we could cover the bill??? When we repent then receive His Forgiveness we cannot add anything to it nor take away anything from it. He loves us, we're here at such a time as this because He purposed in His heart ❤ to create us well before we were ever in our mother's womb He knew us and He calls us His own. We're not accidentally here, He prepared for us, PRE meaning before, we didn't accidentally arrive here, He created us in His image. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher pointing us to JESUS CHRIST. Ask the LORD to fill you with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, He'll keep you even during those times when we don't want to be kept because greater is He that's within us, than he that's in the world. I've been filled with the Holy Spirit for approximately 30 years and I won't dare tell you that I still have had times of the Enemy attacking me in this area but I'd like to say that Paul had it right. My perspective is this my weaknesses are as flags 🏳 & medals 🏅 of commendations from the LORD qualifying me to be used as an example to glorify the LORD our GOD. This applies to you to my sister or brother in Christ, take joy 😂 😊 in this because He said we're overcomers!!!!!!!

I had severe depression for years. It wasn't related to any events in life. I found out it was due to five foods I was eating, one of them which also gave me horrible back pains. One day I had difficulty with catching my breath. The fatigue was bad. My doctor thought I had COPD. There I noticed that my sinuses felt slightly tender. He believed me and gave me three courses of antibiotics. The fatigue left in a day. Then I somehow knew I could eat whatever I wanted. It was true, and I was completely cured of depression.

Depression can be generational in a family but it was never talked about because no one was able to put a label on it. People use to just call it Black Moods that came and went. I was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues and still had severe depressions. A knowledge that God loves you and learning self-love is very important. Psalm 139:14 "I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well." To stay depression free, one must renew their mind in the Word and change thinking patterns.

Saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ "alone" for salvation.

Ugh. Having recently buried a friend who committed suicide, this would have been useless to him, and someone who needs help! Don’t buy into the false teaching on tongues and the need for a second baptism of the Holy Spirit. 100% Unscriptural. The danger in such teaching is that it causes great harm to people chasing these experiences. Please run from these false teachers. Seek a doctor or counseling, have prayer and sound Christian support, do not be afraid to ask and receive help.

Sounds to me like He needed medical treatment for many years. God intervened

Not everyone speaks or can speak in tongues. The Bible says SOME. So if it doesnt happen it does NOT mean you have not received the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 14:5. / 1 Corinthians 1 12 :21- 31.

The Gospel: Plain and Simple “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” - 2 Corithians 11:3 Ask someone today if they are saved and you will most likely hear responses like these: “I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de-termine whether or not a person actually knows the gospel that saves them. These useless phrases don’t describe a thing about what the gospel is and has left a devastating effect of people not knowing what it is that they are saved from nor how they are saved; which leaves a more serious effect of people questioning their salvation. Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salvation that is in Christ with vague church sounding phrases that do not communicate anything. But rather present God’s word with clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel: plain and simple. Sin was passed upon all men by one man Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin (Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good works one might do we are still found sinners in the sight of our Creator God. And all unrighteousness and those who follow get indignation and wrath. We cannot be found righteous for by God’s law we are found sinners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even one law we are found guilty. It is for this reason of not being able to create our own righteousness and being born in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus 3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross 2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath and judgement that was intended for us sinners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial, and resurrection on our behalf that we are able to have peace with God and forgiveness of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good news is unto all but only those that believe in it are made righteous in Christ (Romans 3:22). It is then after we have heard this good news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and we are now part of Christ’s body the church (Eph 1:13) There is nothing that we need to do, no good works that are required, and no bad works that can separate us from our new position in Christ (Romans 8:35-39). Faith and belief in this information from God’s word is the gospel. The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your heart. The gospel is not making him lord of your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not being baptized with water. So next time someone asks you if you are saved. Give them the clear assured answer “Yes! And let me tell you why!” Find more free resources at: www.graceambassadors.com
