The MoD must investigate and remediate. No compromise when it comes to the safety of our lads and lasses.

When a machine ages, there will always be compromises with serviceability, availability and maintainability. The only real solution is to design, produce and enter into service the next generation of totally new machines.

A failure every now and then is expected, thats why we have backup systems like the secondary depth gauge, which did work. The Royal Navy are still world class.

I admire you're enthusiasm, but these things are around 30 years old !!! Because of concessive governments kicking the can down the road and not wanting to commit to the controversial and extremely expensive renewal of our nuclear deterrent they have waited far beyond the point they should have been replaced. Bear in mind how shambolic our defence contracts are, these will ultimately be delayed years before they come out, I can see the ssbns not being replaced for another 10 years at least, making this current crop 40 years old !!!

Why no backups in the control room than? Airliners have 3 altimeters in the cockpit, for a good reason.

@limitlessLtd Ah Grow up China builds new frigates destroyers japan's navy is superior to RN the RN has been run down on purpose if it was run right there would be 15 new destroyers 15 new frigates instead there's 10 type 23 over 30 years old some with busted hulls and 6 45s that need fixed this force could not sustain a war something needs done before your left with a couple of gun boats 👉🤡🤡🤔

Three depth gauge systems needed with an automatic alarm when one starts giving a different reading to the other two? Probably expensive, but peanuts compared to losing a sub and its crew.

There are some really shocking rumours coming from RN Trident crews telling of parts being taken from Vanguard submarines just before deploying having to have equipment taken from other Vanguard sub, so can deploy.

Four is too few and it always was. Five was calculated to be the bare minimum and the fact the submarine service has maintained continuous at sea deterrence all these years with only four is an astonishing achievement. If the UK is serious about the nuclear deterrent and nit just doing it to keep up appearances, then there will be five Dreadnought boats. There won't be five. But five is the minimum credible number.

From largest navy in the world to discussing ‘minimum credible number’ in a few decades is pretty tragic
@lukedogwalker
@lukedogwalker Жыл бұрын
@@HRHooChicken Even at the height of Pax Britannica the Admiralty were having conversations about the minimum credible number of various ship types. They used different terminology back then, but they and every other great navy, especially the USN, have always been wary of overspend and overstretch.

The seas are 'in space' - everything is! 2:10 It'd be nice if ageing defence kit slid slowly over to public domain as far as possible, so domestic engineering training establishments and SMEs could maintain capacity for keeping old kit 'ready' a bit longer. Like space/sea asserting a thick line that can't be crossed between defence/public might simplify presentation, but we shouldn't be losing stuff (like skills, capacity, readiness) to the gap.

More to the point .. a few weeks back .. a V Boat making it's way up the clyde .... when looking at it you would assume it spent it's entire Tour at the bottom of the ocean for period of time in a static position ... . It' was bogging unlike any of the US Boats that come in, they are always visually clean !

Because you don't tend to send your equipment to foreign countries for maintenance, you do it when they're in top shape to keep up appearances for the ignorant masses.

US boats spend little time periods at sea as they have so many boats that are out at one time. The boat you're talking about did like 180 days under water so no wonder it was dirty as hell.

Throwing money around doesn't solve everything. You just end up with more layers of management (jobs for friends and brown nosers) and more cushy retirement directorships for senior officers. What you need is clear policy that is funded and contracts that are managed by people whose degree is not in literature or ancient greek. And you need five boats, because four is too few.

Five separate depth gauges in a Vanguard class control room. All working off different sensors, including direct to sea. In this case FOST shut off main gauge for exercise and forgot about it. XO failed to monitor other gauges. Back afties noticed when hull valves started going funny, looked at their gauge and called control room. CO ordered emergency blow while XO went wibble. Ex-CND member Blair kicked Vanguard replacement into touch. Brown got stiffed with banking crisis, and Cameron delayed a decision under “austerity”. Now CASD is compromised just when we need it most since the end of the cold war. Another ten years before Dreadnaught goes into service, meanwhile our sailors go to sea in submarines that are worn out now let alone their state in a decade. There WILL be a V boat lost at sea unless someone in government catches a grip and pours cash into getting recently refitted and currently under refit boats sorted ASAP.
