Thank you for documenting this work by the train crew to re-rail the two cars that were still off the tracks and the Maintenance of Way crew's efforts to repair the rails that were under the derailed cars. Both the train crew and the Maintenance of Way crew did excellent jobs working in the weather conditions that they found themselves in. I appreciate your camera work on this video, especially your effort to capture the northbound train in the dark. You chose a spot to with exceptional lighting to capture tthe train. WOW! What a great job with today's video. You did a fantastic job with catching the first of the derailed car moved and all the work and time it took to move it, so the final parts of the repair could be completed. Those MOE crew guys were awesome getting the car moved and getting right to work as daylight slipped away so the last 3 cars could be moved. Thanks so much hanging around to catch all the action as nighttime and snow fell on Iron Mountain and then staying around after all the switching at Alter to bring that long train back north. It may have been dark, but with the lights you found along with the Christmas lights topped off one of the best videos you have posted. Thanks, Jason, for a job well done! I can't wait for the next one.

Thank you for your video at cold temperatures ! I wonder, why they did not use the crane to rerail the center beam inside the curve ?? They repaired the curved track...until the next derailment... Use screws stead of Spikes...they are better... Greetings from Germany from a trainmaster of the museum railroad SELFKANTBAHN...-->>> ask Google ! We do screw our tracks...and the work the MOW crews performed...I do know it very well..working on the track gang as a volounteer.. Our association had enough money to pay for the materials, but not for the guys doing the track work or doing any other task of a railroad....!!. MERRY SNOWY CHRISTMAS and a happy healthy new year !

As a rail fan, to be honest. Looking down the line in the very beginning, this rail bed is at the top of neglect and or need of replacement. How do they get away with it?
@OkanganMadViking25011 сағат бұрын
because they most likely don't have any available or enough rail inspectors in general for that area and before anyone says they don't exist, actually they do, and their main job is to catch defects in the rails joints, etc. as well as maintain switches, defective devices, and anything that involves the railroad.
@erie91011 сағат бұрын
Track costs between $500,000 to $1,000,000 per mile to build. If it's replacement, add the cost to remove the old rail and the ties that cannot be reused. Track infrastructure is a depreciate asset, so the reconstruction cost is not deductible except over 20 years or more. But the railroad has to have the cash to pay for the materials and labor NOW. I doubt that the ELS has all that much spare cash lying around to rebuild 10-20 miles of track. Of course, it could borrow the money, if anyone will lend that much. That involves interest expense, too.

Jason, what exactly is a frog?
@Americal-v6r13 сағат бұрын
A frog is a switch rail on to another track or rail line.
@jasonasselin12 сағат бұрын
A device placed on the rail to help get the wheel back on, the MOW crew and others call it that too. I don't know why others point to a switch, maybe other railroads call it something else.
@stevearcher392112 сағат бұрын
Its also the nickname for an angled piece of metal ramp that the wheels ride up onto and forces them back in line to return on track
@class77sncb12 сағат бұрын

@AlleyKatt10 сағат бұрын
A "frog" is the acutely angled "X" on a switch track - the space where the wheel flange passes through the other rail and it looks like frog legs. What Jason is referring to is also called a frog... actually a "rerailer frog" and sometimes just "rerailer". Unlike the switch frog, the rerailer frog forces the flange up and over the rail... to re-rail it. EDIT: That angled "X" is just one type, a "common crossing". There's also load-bearing frogs, movable point frogs. etc.

People that drive in front of trains must be brain dead in my opinion. I work for the Central Indiana & Western and see people really take big chances at railroad crossings every time we make a run to the CSX yard in Anderson Indiana.
@JohnDoe-sm9hc11 сағат бұрын
No replaced ties - not even replaced rail which clearly is in bad shape. So a few months and it will all happen again. By all appearances, this company spends nothing on actual maintenance - just patch and go. Right down to locomotives with leaky cooling systems. ... penny saved = dollar spent ...
