Welcome back to channel 11 news: A westbound commuter train has derailed at around 12:00 PM today. It appears someone has messed with/changed a switch the train crossed over.

BREAKING NEWS!!! Exactly at 4:00pm a MetroLink train derailment occurred in LA California. Sadly 16 people died, only 5 survived. Hopefully this never happens again. The cause was that the switch was sent to the wrong track and kids gathered together and put a big hunk of ballast on to the tracks. Now back to you GUSTAVTIME.

We have breaking news for today. A metrolink derailed because the switch wasn't on the right tracks. Well some passengers got injured but no dead bodies. This derailment is caused by a single switch. Back to you Gustivetime

Hitting a misaligned switch from the trailing end would not cause a derailment. You'd split the switch and break the switch arm, and that's about it...

Derek Zhang It wouldn’t, trust me. All the tonnage and force of a train at any speed is enough to break or bend any throw mechanism holding the points over. Running through a switch is a relatively common occurrence in railroading.

What’s with that horn valve? The MPI’s don’t have that, it’s a button. Actually none of the Metrolink motors have that, they’re all buttons. Maybe the 800, but that’s not really in service anymore anyway

It's a repaint of the Caltrain MP36. They have the joystick horn valves.

Jonathan Clark German ICE {check rail admittedly But Still...] There was a accident when The ICE still used Wheels That Had Rubber on the Inside of the Rim To make the Train ride Smoother

trains can and can't derail when ripping a switch, depending on wether the switch has a locking mechanism. Manual switches aren't equipped with locking mechanisms (I would not even imagine where they would since you need two levers for it). The way they work is to keep the blades in one place in order for trains not to derail when going front onto them instead of them not being locked and potentially moving loose.
