On June 11 1992, at 12:31 pm, Conrail NHSE (New Haven-Selkirk) derailed while heading north off the Beacon line and onto the Hudson line. My camera was recording as NHSE passes and captures the moment the train derailed, evident by the emergency brake application and dust cloud. The bulk of the video documents the aftermath, and finishes with various passing trains of Amtrak and Metro North. Metro North was fortunate in that the northern most derailed car (ATSF boxcar) stopped just south of the interlocking signal, not fouling the interlocking. The interlocking was cleared in a matter of minutes with the assistance of the Metro North welders who were welding a frog at the time of the derailment. When I arrived at track side to film NHSE, I was thinking of positioning myself next to the branch, in hind sight , I'm obviously glad I did not. It appears from the video that the MP and Frisco boxcars "picked the switch" to the spur track off the beacon line, resulting in those cars traversing the spur and jack knifing.
