Located in the county of Derbyshire, and roughly halfway between Birmingham and Sheffield, is the city of Derby (pronounced 'DAR-by').
The name Derby is believed to be derived from 'Deoraby', meaning 'village of the deer' in Danish. The Danes settled here in the 9th century after the Viking raids, when the Danelaw was established. This was essentially a treaty whereby what we now call England was carved up by a diagonal line between Liverpool and London, very roughly speaking. The Danes were given the northern and eastern parts of the land, including Derby.
Geographically Derby lies adjacent to the River Derwent, a tributary of the River Trent. Notable architecture in the city includes Derby Cathedral, whose tower is 16th century Gothic, Derby Guildhall on Market Place, built in 1828, and The Old Bell Hotel on Sadler Gate - the striking timber-framed building seen just before the 20-minute mark. This was built in 1650 and is Derby's last surviving coaching inn, i.e. resting point for horses and coach drivers in the pre-railway era.
Industry in Derby goes back to the 17th century - specifically cloth, brewing and clockmaking. In the 18th century, production of silk and cotton had begun which would carry through to the Industrial Revolution. In 1839 Derby's railway station opened, with Derby itself later chosen as the headquarters of Midland Railway after they formed in 1844.
During the walk we see a statue of one of the pioneers of the brewing industry - Michael Thomas Bass, grandson of William Bass who founded Bass Brewery in nearby Burton-on-Trent. In addition to inheriting the family business, Michael went on to become a member of parliament for Derby, and would make several philanthropic contributions to the city (or town as it was then), including a new library, school of art, recreation ground and swimming baths.
Derby was awarded city status in 1977, having previously been one of the few towns in England with a cathedral. This has made it the only city in the UK whose name ends in the Danish 'by' suffix.
The city's sporting representation includes Derby County Football Club, who play at Pride Park, which replaced their former stadium, The Baseball Ground, in 1997. Derbyshire County Cricket Club also play their home games in Derby.
Derby is the birthplace of Lara Croft... or more precisely Core Design who developed several games here including Tomb Raider, the 3D action-adventure whose protagonist became a sensation in 1996 and beyond. The franchise made the developers a mint, although being pressured for more Tomb Raider games, they ended up making five in the space of five years, arguably resulting in burnout. The franchise was passed on to rivals Crystal Dynamics in the end and Core Design dissolved in 2010, but their legacy remains. Just off Osmaston Road is Lara Croft Way - possibly the only street in the country to be named after a video game character. The only reason it doesn't feature in this walk is, it's a busy dual carriageway between two roundabouts.

some central areas having been decimated by pretty bad planning, dear old Derby still exudes class as her many beautiful buildings and cathedral clearly show. The river is just awesome. THX

Oh yeah, it's beautiful down by the Derwent. I'm amazed Derby doesn't get more recognition, especially with its central location.

Ah cool, I might check it out. It's criminal how little media attention Derby gets for somewhere so central!

@@4KExplorer It is very criminal indeed. Derby has such a great history but often overlooked. This needs to change. We have lots of videos planned on Derby which will help.

A good quality video which I enjoyed watching. Sadly though Derby has always been dowdy and uninspiring and completely left out of the cities' boom which took place further north. Way back in the 1960s it had a few good facilities hiding behind its facade - dance hall (Locarno) and spiritualists' church (13 Curzon St.) to name but two. It's athletics club has always had a passionate core, and it appears that the same can be said for its rugby and soccer clubs. So there's a few things happening behind the scene, but alas the scene needs flattening, rebuilding, and expanding if possible.
