Derecho in Central Illinois - High Winds, Much Needed Heavy Rain - 6/29/23

A derecho swept across the Midwest on June 29th, 2023, resulting in widespread damaging winds with isolated gusts over 100 mph. Much of the region is now in severe to extreme drought, so the rain was beneficial, but the winds that came with it obviously were not! Footage taken just west of Peoria, Illinois, near the village of Hanna City.

Between 850-700 mb winds, dpva, waa, frontogenesis, bulk shear, cape, outflow boundaries and helicity the atmosphere is scouring out Trumpism. Great video.

@MidwestStormChasing you are welcome. How fast was the wind speed? I honestly never even heard of straight line winds before until last summer in Ohio. We had one hit in my county and next county north of us..I was woken up to a tornado siren at midnight, it was an extreme lightning show, within 5 minutes the winds come flying in. We got 80-90 mph winds with gusts up to 94.. then, at 4 am another round went through.. it was not a confirmed tornado.. lots of damage, power was knocked out for about a week. It seemed like it was worse then a twister.. that was crazy narly thunderstorm 😳 anyways, even though that thunderstorm you chased was pretty narly scary .. in your opinion, which storm is worse? Tornado 🌪 or windstorm? Thank you for the video too

@@cassietroyer1195 winds in this area appeared to peak around 60 mph. I believe tornadoes are more dangerous, mainly because they are much harder to predict/forecast. Though, particularly intense straight-line wind events can certainly cause tornado-like damage, but over a much larger area.

@MidwestStormChasing I have never been through a tornado 🌪 but can imagine the damage could be bad as well. Have always taken the wind for granted, ever since that night last year have never taken them for granted. The way the wind was whipping around it seriously sounded like a tornado. They are both terrible, it makes sense what you say though. Tornadoes can pop up unexpected and on the other hand, the sky turns green, not a good sign. I know storms are scarier in person than on a video. But I've watched several videos of this storm. And in all of them i can't seem to believe these were 80-90mph gusts. They just look like the typical 50-60mph. I see the damage it caused, so there's just something missing here.

I was honestly not impressed at all by the winds, considering warnings were for 70-80 mph winds. But there was damage everywhere!
