Peter Schilling is German. Originally the song was in German language also. The music style is something special. For a short period of time we had this kind of music and it was very popular, cause singers came back to german language. It was called " neue deutsche Welle ", which is translated 1 to one new german wave ( in terms of new movement) lots of these songs were very funny and kind of dadaism... but some were more lyric. Like this one

This is one of the great 80s songs that make me time-travel. Truly encompasses that special vibe of that time (what other commentators also stated). The 80s might not come back, but I am certain that there will be other times in the future where we will experience a likewise outburst of (pop-)musical creativity as it was back then. With new great vibes.

When you said the song sounded familiar, you've probably heard the cover by Shiny Toy Guns, which was the version that was used for a popular car advert (for the Lincoln MKZ). Although the vocalist is female, it's otherwise a relatively like-for-like cover without too much stylistic deviation.

If I'm not mistaken, the song was created in the 80s in the NDW movement. It was a movement in which people wanted to do something against the American market. Also because the local and national record industry wasn't doing particularly well. They tried to go in a new direction. somehow poppier and yet somewhere, unique. This resulted in this song as well as others by other singers, Da, Da, Da, with Steffan Remmler, or Nena as well as Starry Sky by Hubert K.

Didn't realized the English language version did so well on the international market. The German language version suggests he maybe makes some kind of contact ... or maybe he just starts hallucinating. The 1994 Bommbastic remix was released in both versions, the German and the English one. Die Wüste lebt (English version The Noah Plan) and Terra Titanic (released in German & English too) are worth a look too.

The original version - in german - is a lot better. The chorus sounds so much more natural. In german the start of the chorus are just 2 words ("völlig losgelöst") while in english its 5 words ("Earth below us Drifting, falling"). For everyone who knows the original the english version is just a little bit clumsy...
