"Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling features a character unofficially related to "Major Tom", the protagonist of David Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity", the song is about the character breaking off contact with ground control and traveling off into space.

Major Tom 'continues' in Ashes to Ashes. His ultimate fate is revealed in Bowie's next to last video Black Star. His remains make a cameo appearance in David's last video Lazarus. Space Oddity was inspired by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and is not about drugs.

As long as I've known of this song, it wasn't until several years ago that I found out that there's a German version of it, and the fact that the German version is the original. Granted, it was Rammstein that gave birth to my love of German music when I was in high school, and looking back now, I could probably say that this song, which I did know about when I was in high school, would have done it for me had I found out about the German original back then, lol! That said, the German original, I now prefer over the English version. ,,Völlig losgelöst von der Erde... Schwebt das Raumschiff, völlig schwerelos...!"
