There's a reason 30 years later U2 plays in front of 50,000 people each show! They're fantastic live and sonically are one of the best live performers. U2 always said, their songs are meant for a live audience. Thanks for a great reaction!

One of my favourite songs ever. The way the intro builds instrument by instrument, until Bono's vocals... perfection.

As a little kid I would rifle through my Dad’s music collection while he was at work and found this album. It ended up being transcendent for me and I knew I had to play music. Listening to it took me to another place and it still does today. Thanks for the great reaction!

Ah man… you said they look so young there. Truth. I was 17 in 1987, the Joshua Tree album and tour were massive. U2 was in the stratosphere at the time, radio airplay was constant, CDs were newish technology and this was the first CD I ever bought. And yes, they played this in concert… the Joshua Tree tour was impossible to get tickets for. I remember Ticketmaster ticket lotteries, scalpers, etc. If you snagged tickets you bought as many as you could so you could bring friends. Saw U2 in Saint Paul, MN back then and would love to see them one more time before they hang things up for good. Yes they were young, so was I. Its good to see them still active all these years later.

The band on the day actually did about a 40 minute set before it was shut down by the police, playing live and also miming along to the track along with a few other songs. This version of the video is actually a longer cut more like a making of the video than the actual video played on MTV in 1987.

Thanks for the shout out for The Edge, his playing is magnificent. Best word I can use to describe it. Love love love U2, they are such an important band.

And his backing vocals, which are so similar to Bono but usually a cleaner sound and higher pitch, are the real secret of the band's punch, especially live. Similar to Mike Mills of REM and Michael Anthony of Van Halen...those backing vocals provide so much of the sound

Such a cool song and this video and its filming is indeed iconic. The Beatles' concert on the roof was a different (and more organized) happening and therefore, the raw factor of U2's take of filming their video this way is what made it so worth it.
@dougman23
@dougman23 Жыл бұрын
The Beatles were also playing live, playing a concert. U2 was filming a mimed promo video. The film style is, indeed, guerilla, and everything about the video is true...except the band is not really playing. But that's true of 99% of music videos, even "live" ones. The Beatles were playing live and together for the first time in a few years, so that rooftop show was special in its own way but, yes, a planned concert.

I've been lucky enough to have seen U2 twice in concert, and they DO NOT disappoint! I'm Irish and have seen them play Belfast and in their home town, Dublin☘both concerts were unbelievably amazing, but seeing them play to THEIR DUBLIN was something I will NEVER forget. Bono is so interactive with the crowd and the band just kept on playing for hours! #LEGENDS PS U2 are known for playing impromptu gigs, especially in America - PLEASE REACT TO - 'All Along the Watchtower', from Rattle & Rum - they brought a whole freeway to a standstill🔥 A couple of years ago, for NYE they performed on top of the BBC building in London.

Where do I begin with my comment? I guess that the Joshua Tree album was the reason I became a U2 fan. That being said, they always interacted with their fans and this video is the best example. This place is in one of the worst neighborhoods in Los Angeles. There are lots of homeless, drug addicted, thief’s and some very strange people. I meet up usually ones a year with some of my U2-sisters and we like to explore some of those iconic places. Last year we went to this place, it’s right next to the unwanted famous, super scary Cecil Hotel(which is closed now). This song is definitely one of their amazing iconic masterpieces

Hello *Dereck,* It reminds me of myself in the cold winter of 1987; I was 20, headphones on my ears, listening to this song, sitting on the bus to get to my work's place, the side of my head glued to the window, contemplating the passers-by and the life that's just beginning to bustling about in the cold streets of the sleepy town, between night and daybreak which is beginning to dawn. It wasn't really *"where,"* but rather *"when"* the streets *no longer* have names. Peace, folks. ☮😏

Not a set-up. I worked literally 2 blocks away int he Cal Mart Garment District - it was gritty but only really sketch at night back then. Now it's very gentrified though Skid Row is still just a few blocks away. I saw them later that week at the Colosseum. They were transcendant!

The irony of this video is that nobody had any idea that U2 were about to have success comparable to The Beatles. The radio voice overs of that time note that U2 were starting to sell out their concert tickets. This video was meant as a Beatles reference, but U2 got the ending that the Beatles wanted to their own rooftop performance with the cops stopping them for creating a disturbance. Instead, the cops helped the Beatles complete their performance because they were so popular at that time. The cops stopped U2, having no idea how popular U2 were about to become over the next year. This made the police look bad. Today, the cops offer U2 escorts and essentially give them the same treatment that The Beatles got at the height of their popularity.

All Streets have a name where U2 come from, I remember reading it's because of the 'block' infrastructure in the US. Is there another country who use numbers to name their streets?
@dougman23
@dougman23 Жыл бұрын
Where the Streets Have No Name is about a metaphorical place where you couldn't tell the religion of people based on what street they lived on. In Dublin, if you said the name of a street, everyone knew only Catholics or only Protestents lived there. It was during the height of "The Troubles" in Ireland, when paramilitary groups from the IRA or UDA committed mass atrocities in the name of their version of Christianity. The northern Irelanders tended to be more loyal to the Church of England and remaining a part of the UK/England, and the others were Catholic and in favor of a separate Ireland. The Streets also generally indicated one's class/income, another dividing factor. So Bono wrote of a land where the streets had no name, so you couldn't make value judgments based on where someone was from.
