This is one of the greatest songs of all-time, in my opinion. A true masterpiece. I remember REM's Michael Stipe saying its the one song he wishes he had written himself. The whole of Achtung Baby is U2's masterpiece album. Every track on it is wonderful and the album was a massive game changer for U2 in so many ways. I'd love to hear you react to more songs from it, especially: THE FLY (amazing guitar from The Edge) ZOO STATION (brilliant European industrial rock sounds) WHO'S GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES. UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD. ULTRAVIOLET. LOVE IS BLINDNESS - heck, just every damn track! I adore U2. I love their 80's work too, which was very different but 90's U2 is when they really took chances, were experimental, adventurous, creative.Other songs I adore are: STAY (FARAWAY, SO CLOSE) from their Zooropa album. HOLD ME, THRILL ME KISS ME, KILL ME (a great rock track theme song from the Batman movie in 1995.) YOUR BLUE ROOM (from U2's Passengers side-project with Brian Eno.) DISCOTHEQUE and MOFO, (from their POP album in 1997, shows a more dance/techno sound from the band) Like I said, in the 90's, whether it all worked or not, they weren't afraid to branch out and experiment with different sounds and styles. Some fans adored the new European industrial and electronic sounds, others preferred what they were doing in the 80's, either their early 80s Irish rock and New Wave sound or their later American rock and blues sound) .Some, like me, love it all, but especially 90's U2. :) From the 80's I'd definitely recommend: THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE (song) BAD The whole of the Joshua Tree album (which is U2 in their 'Americana' period) - in particular the first 4 tracks on the album are magic! Plus, DESIRE and ALL I WANT IS YOU, from their Rattle & Hum album. Damn, so many more songs I could recommend but I think I've mentioned enough, lol! Their more recent output has been more conventional and less creative, I guess, more MOR and playing safe (still many good songs though) which makes a lot of people foolishly slag them off and call them boring, completely forgetting about or ignoring the first 2 decades of incredible music U2 gave us, which is such a shame!! Glag you're listening to this iconic band, Dereck. Please delve more into their music, you won't be disappointed! :)

Seeing your love for U2 continue to blossom, as a younger fan myself, is so heartwarming! Was nowhere close to coming into this world when this song came out, but I don't believe, that means it can't touch me just as close as it did anyone who heard it on the radio for the first time in '91! For the next steps on your wonderful journey, "Every Breaking Wave" is a modern U2 MUST (some folks in the comments recommended a stellar live performance already!), "Beautiful Day" for something more positive, uplifting and high-energy, and "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" for another politically-charged U2 classic!!! 💓 Whatever path you take next, I cannot wait to see this journey continue :D

Actually, it’s about a band breaking up, as U2 was on the verge of doing when the Edge proposed a chord progression for the bridge in “Mysterious Ways” and inadvertently gave birth to this song. They thought the magic they once had disappeared. It didn’t. The song is brutally honest…”We hurt each other and we’ll do it again.” Rolling Stone magazine falsely claimed it was about AIDS just ahead of U2 signing off on it being used for charity.

Every Breaking Wave from Songs of Innocence is a career-great, imo!! As great as One, I'd say no, my pick for U2's best composition would have to be New Year's Day or With Or Without You, but just because a newer song isn't as beloved or considered as "great" as the classic stuff, doesn't mean it can't be great in its own special ways.
