From what I've read, Motown didn't want him to perform this since it wasn't a Motown song but rather one for Epic/ CBS Records. MJ said he wouldn't do the Jackson 5 reunion if they didn't let him perform this and history was made! I remember being a kid in early '83 and all the department stores would play this performance and the Billie Jean video in their TV departments in order to make people stop and look at the TVs on sale. It always worked; there were always a large number of people stopping then standing in front of the TVs when Billie Jean came on.

It’s important that current and future generations understand the shockwave this performance created. It not only launched Michael into super-stardom, it had a significant cultural impact. It was the first time, on a global scale, that non-black teens by the millions were idolizing a black artist. Kids in predominantly white suburbia wanted to dress like him, move like him and, most importantly, they wanted to buy his music. It was a seismic shift in the culture.

You just don't understand how big it was when Jermaine and Michael came together and put their arms around each other during "I'll be there." i'll never forget this performance. And back in the day i could do the entire Billie Jean dance routine on demand. And would do it lol. Shoot just ask. And i'd break into Billie Jean, at like 14. lol.

In "Billie Jean", MJ hunted in his Mom's closet and found the shimmery jacket shortly before his "hitting-the-stratosphere" performance. A side note: After naming his song, his producer, QJ, was against the title because of the tennis great, Ms B.J. King but Michael refused to change his chosen title AND we're the fortunate ones to enjoy this great song!!! R.I.P. MICHAEL~~~

I love the medley from this performance so, so much. Never can say goodbye gives me goosebumps every time! People like to point out that he used playback for Billie Jean, but in that moment he didn’t need to prove he could sing - he had literally done that just minutes before - the Billie Jean performance was all about the visual. The dance and the intensity, watch his expression throughout...it’s a magical performance regardless of the playback. The King 💕 PS. When Jermaine starts to sing, you can see that he had a dead mic. Michael goes over in what seems like a sweet brotherly moment, but that was also necessitated by Jermaine needing to be heard. Worked out nicely! Love your reaction as always!!! Please don’t stop with MJ ☺️ PPS! You noticed the crowd clapping along...what I love, is the band conductor in the background clapping along! MJ is irresistible!

Never ever in history was or will be a performance close to this... the music ..his energy how smooth and great he dances is like he is gliding on the waves of the rythm. i remember reading his book., he said he was looking for an idea for his perfomance and the show and he had seen before some breakdancer doing a moonwalk kind move..so he invited a breakdancer the evening before the show to show him some breakdance moves and this glidiing backwards. He changed it little bit and moonwalk was born. He decided to introduce his new song billy jean, but he wanted to concentrate on the dancing and the moonwalk for that new song so he decided for a playback for billy jean. And that song and his performance was like a rocket for his career.. Legendary ..

Little known fact...Jermaine's mic malfunctioned which is why he comes in kind of late with his part in "Il'' Be There". But MJ was quick to improvise by moving over to him and allowing Jermaine to use his mic. I was the most excited about Jackie's outfit, especially his sparkly green Nikes. So dope I think Mike borrowed his black jacket from his mother. He didn't know he could fit it, but it worked. The following is not something directed towards you; I just can't help but “hang my head, ” so to speak, whenever anyone nowadays randomly mentions or gets compelled to mention playback getting used during a performance, lol. Perhaps it's due to the decade's worth of people making playback out to be some sort of “symbolism” that someone that they know damn well can sing, “can't sing,” lol. Again, I know that's not your intentions; I'm generally speaking about the certified “playback generals.”. I'm assuming that your reference of playback is for Michael’s performance of Billie Jean; because the Jackson medley was mostly, if not entirely live. Side Note; I just heard him mention Michael likely lip-synching, so duly noted, lol.

The j5 medley was 100% live but only Billie Jean was playback since it was the first time he did it. Most people in this era would sing playback for the first time ever doing a single so the public would hear the version clear and buy it.

Side notes: A night I will never forget. We waited weeks for this to premiere. In my neighborhood, there wasn't a soul on the street, we all were in front of our TV's enjoying the show. The whole show was a classic, never to be duplicated but everyone was waiting for the Jacksons even the other entertainers. MJ said he was not lip-synching except for the background vocals. I saw or either read an interview (Its been so long, I can't remember which one it was) of Rebbie (MJ's sister), after this had premiered where she said that she was the one who yelled out "Billie Jean!" She said her Mother looked at her and rolled her eyes at her, LOL. When they all got home, they replayed that part over and over and laughed. Oh, and the beautiful sequins jacket MJ had on was his Mom's, he took it out of her closet to wear on the show :-)
