I met him on my first visit to Silverstone in 1983, for the 1000 km Group C race. He was in the Rothmans Porsche, and he was very approachble and willing signed my programme! He won the race also, sharing the car with another legend called Stefan Bellof!!A great day!!

Melanie introduced me to your Father back in the nineties when I had an indoor kart track in London called F1 Chelsea. We had several charity events over the years and Derek never failed to turn up, generously donating his time, over and over again, to give to the causes we supported. I cannot find the words to express my gratitude for his kindness, manner, charm and never ending sense of humour that he presented to me, my staff and especially to the children who were there to enjoy a special day out. You will never believe it but I was researching a UN-1 gearbox upgrade for an esprit and found this.. what a marvelous find, thank you so much Justin and the Bell family for sharing this with us. Your dad is an incredibly young 75..... more like 60 if you ask me... and I was so pleased to see a manual 550. :-) racing drivers are exempt from all road driving regulations, so far as I am concerned, because you know what to do when your facing the wrong way :-) the rest of us including me, need to learn how to drive. My only claim to fame is spinning a radical under race instruction... without damaging it... and that was probably because I was going to slow... :-) I was still learning the meaning of downforce... :-( Thank you so much again.... PS. I bought an R8 V10 plus after your little video.... to go with the RS6 family avant.

It's great that you've recorded this moment with your father. I sure wish I had video of my Dad and Grandfather. Lovely video! Absolutely brilliant! Great father and son stuff. Reminds me of the great relationship I had with my dad. I met Derek and Justin at the Porsche media event at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2015 and asked Mr. Bell to sign his book. He was so very kind and polite. A true gentleman. An honour to meet such nice guys. Happy Birthday and again great video!
