In Venezuela we have a saying that goes something like “Are you doing a Willie Mays?”, meaning someone that is faking not knowing something he’s actually very good at. This comes from a 1950’s Caribbean Series played in Caracas (Mays was playing with Puerto Rico’s Santurce), in which he went 0-12 in his first at bats to later tear the Series with a fenomenal batting performance.

@@jp00423mkVery to Leo Durocher’s famous quote about Willie; "If somebody came up and hit .450, stole 100 bases, and performed a miracle in the field everyday I'd still look you in the eye and say Willie was better. He could do the five things you have to do to be a superstar: hit, hit with power, run, throw and field.”

I wish I could have seen Willie play in person or on TV. If you were able to do so consider yourself lucky.

Check out Willie at the Old Timers Game at Shea in 1981. Ball hit into the gap, at age 50 he still has the wheels to track it down. Had to be helped up but the competitive fire in him wouldn't let that ball fall.

As a sophomore in 1973 @ CSULA I gave a speech on Willie Mays when he retired from BASEBALL with the Mets! I got a standing ovation and rave reviews and there wasn't a dry eye in that predominantly White class. I was one of 2 Black students, and now as I realize that that was over a half century ago... I'm saddened that today there's a much smaller percentage of Black American players in the Major Leagues than there were that very day in 1973.

I think a sign of how great a player is in terms of all time is that you could drop him into ANY era of the history of the game and he wouldn’t miss a beat off of his career averages. Mays would be Mays in any decade from the inception of baseball to right this very moment.
