Here, I interview Derek Lambert of MythVision about his journey into and through religion and addiction, and out through to sobriety and nonreligion. This is the first of two. Apologies for my popping mic.

I went to an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church from the time I was about 12 until about 21. They had alter calls every Sunday, I can't tell you how many alter calls I answered. I remember feeling very emotional and being convinced that the Lord was calling me to preach. Thank goodness that it wore off before I went off to school. Thankfully I backslid. I did experience a lot of guilt throughout my twenties. I didn't finally deconvert until my forties. I think what really helped me deconvert was access to all of the information on the internet. Before the internet so much of the information was only available in books instead of at my fingertips. Thanks for a great interview. You and Derek are two of my favorite skeptics.

Now that I know what alter call is, I can see how easily my vulnerable daughter was sucked into evangelical Christianity. (She was raised an atheist.)

Derek, It is a while I am following your channel, and I am amazed. Believe me, even English is my third language, I try to use words, which honestly describes people, and phenomenons. Having said that, I think your life story is something fantastic, I mean, it sounds not real, but something which only could happen in man's fantasy. A young man falling in three so deep problems, like Alcoholism, drug addiction and religious fundamentalism, and at a sudden, not only stop all three destructive habits, but become a great personality here on KZbin. And that, in a field, which demands a lot from a person, is just unbelievable. Congratulations, and thanks for being here. At the end, on the other day, I thought about you, and I got a wish. I know it is difficult for you to do that, but I wish you doing it anyway. What? I wish, you just stop everything you do now, and start studying at university. You have an extraordinary talent, which I think can make a renown scholar of you. Anyway, I wish the best for you, and your family.

I highly recommend that this become a series: "Deconversion Stories". Please bring in the people we never otherwise truly meet: Darkmatter2525, NonStampCollector, TheraminTrees, etc.

22:33 Actually, WLC flat out says "I'm not an evidentialist", like you say citing the HS as how he knows Christianity is true "wholly apart from the evidence". Why he spends so much effort putting forward evidence, then, is a mystery. I was shocked hearing WLC spell this out, it's one of the major reasons I started to be suspicious of apologetics as a Christian. It's a lot of glossing over a fundamentally unjustifiable belief.

His childhood was a lot like mine but i started questioning church and the belief at like 11-13. Even at that young the old testament god didn't feel like the center of pure morality at all and had many human quality failings, was more a ( Do as i say not as i do) god. Jesus would say this act is immoral and never should be done then old testament god says Watch me. He met his wife in high school? That never happens, probably the luckiest event in his life, I'm glad his hard-line fundamental belief and speaking in tongues church going didn't push her away.
