There are actually 12 different variations: RH-LH, RH-RF, RH-LF LH-RH, LH-RF, LH-LF RF-LF, RF-RH, RF-LH LF-RF, LF-RH, LF-LH I like to do all these back to back for 2 minutes each. It takes 24 minutes in total to do that and you could also do whatever rudiment you want and not just singles.

Derek Roddy is amazing. The snake is awesome too. And if you look you can see Jar-Jar-Binks behind Derek in the background too.

Wow! This was the hardest exercise for me. I had to slow the right hand left foot combination down all the way to 130 bpm, and I have been playing for 15 years. LOL!

i'm not into death metal at all but you seem to be a good teacher and have good lessons. not to mention you seem to be a really nice guy. keep it up!

keep trying i remember i couldn't do it for shit and i was like "fuck it", but i didn't give up it took me about a year and a half to master it and now i've been doing it for three years and it's the most easiest thing in the world to me now all it takes is practice

It's a blast beat, basically a single stroke roll between your hand and foot.
@Jimii8915 жыл бұрын
im playing this at 130 atm...just because my right hand and left foot say, are a little uncoordinated when it comes to a single stroke between them...great exercise man!
@olliemedsy15 жыл бұрын
some people seem to get annoyed with all the time and practice you have to put in but i acually find it fun

Hey I can play this exercise no problem. Double bass drum playing in garage bands must have made this easy. I wish I knew about these exercises in the 1990s.

I can see how this would help more endurance and help with alternating strokes between hands and feat. But, and Im being serious, if you want some REALLY awesome hand/leg independence, learn Jazz. It helps so much! I love playing rock, that's my primary style, and I was good at it, but ever since I started learning jazz, my ability to play better fills (in rock) and better beats is amazing! Learn Jazz, it will help u no matter what style u play.

At around 5:10 the snake is like "DUDE, SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!!!"

Bassdrum is on the onbeats, hand is on the offbeats. This exercise is hard, hes even better at this now.
@rasmus-eklund16 жыл бұрын
This is just crazy hard. its really hard doing left fot and right hand.
@wanjanechtangroeger17 жыл бұрын
you have to start with this VERY slow. maybe 100 bpm or so...

@pearldude72917 жыл бұрын
with these, i find its a lot easier to do right hand with left foot or left hand with right foot as opposed to both left or right. thats because im right handed and im generally used to leading with the right on the beat and the left is almost always on the up beat. this is hard to overcome...

@alfalex3815 жыл бұрын
it's right hand then left foot. He's not playing them at the same time, even though it seems. If it's too fast at 170 u just gotta slow the tempo, cuz it seriously hurts when ur not in control.

omg amazing playing BUT look in the back round :P hes got a ja ja binks figureen from star wars :P

Get Axis pedals if you can afford them. Loads of the best death metal drummers use them, check out the album credits of bands like Deeds Of Flesh, Spawn Of Possession, Odious Mortem etc
@KoKaTa17 жыл бұрын
this is FUCKING hard!
@stormblazt9015 жыл бұрын
goddamn this is fucking hard and he does it almost perfectly. I could execute it at like 10 bpm lol
@blueisournew2sun16 жыл бұрын
so that way u can be more flex-i-ble whene ever it comes to using you left foot, have u ever tried just using your left foot it not that easy so i would suggest u try it some time try starting your double bass with your left and practice with your left its just more for you to know how to do

I don't think it's being uneducated at all. He's just giving an analogy that his audience will adhere to. Describing it like that also gives the idea of how this exercise applies practically on the drumset. Often when students are taught an exercise, regardless of what genre/instrument they play, they have thoughts like "why am I doing this?" and "what's the point?". If you can keep them grounded in the practical application of the exercise they may be more inclined to actually do it.
@Blacklorigine15 жыл бұрын

i play my one footed blasts like that its way more comfortable than playing right foot right hand and when people see you play they are like WOW HOLYN SHIT he plays his blast realy weird

it's funny to see how easier it is to do after a while though the concept behind it is simple but its rather difficult to even begin with it.. the only thing that bothers me is the amount of time you have to put forth in order to even get mediocre at these techniques

those people aren't musicians. any musician knows that to get better at their instrument (especially as good as Roddy is) they need to work their asses off to do so. anyone looking for shortcuts should definitely never try playing death metal drums

ok, 4 god sakes everyone whos like *OMG theres a snake behind him1!!!!* grow up! theres nothing wrong with that! i have a ton of snakes and drum so i would know(im not trying to sound like a smart ass) but derek, i would not recomend practicing near them, the vibrations are not good 4 them lol awesome practicing
@guiaanselmo17 жыл бұрын
but he can only play this way because he was bit by that snake and he store his drumsticks on a coffin.
@bizrlee16 жыл бұрын
You know it's sad when he can't just say "single strokes between hand and foot"... He has to say "like a blast beat but take one hand away". Are most metal drummers REALLY that uneducated now?!!!! I thought most of us understood basic drum terminology!! *lol*
