The main reason why he’s really good at the one-string melodies/licks is that he was heavily influenced by and studied the techniques of Ali Akbar Khan, an Indian classical musician who plays the sarod. There’s a lot of Indian music inflection in Trucks’ playing.

In Indian classical music, whether it is North Indian Hindustani Music or South Indian Carnatic music, the solo instrument typically emulates the human voice. This kind of cantabile style is why there are so many runs on a single string. Derek’s study of Indian music shows in his playing.

Derek also does this rake with his thumb between licks. I have a friend who compared this to a gospel singer taking a breath and I thought that was a perfect description.

I’m happy to say I’ve met Derek and had my picture made with him. He is one of the few musicians whose playing has made me cry. There’s a gig he played pre-TTB when it was just the DTB on a show called mountain stage where Susan joined in and they were playing her song: I wanna move away from here. That’s the song and playing that brought me to tears! Derek has something special. He’s been unique almost since he picked up the guitar. I still think of him as the child prodigy with the Atlanta braves hat on. Long live Derek Trucks!

Thanks Ross. Derek is a beautiful musician. The level of virtuosity, but crucially, still with incredible musicality and lyrical quality in his playing, is just mind boggling. The fact that Derek Trucks, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Joe Bonamassa, Zakk Wylde, Al DiMeola (just to name a few) are always performing live in so many diff incarnations lends fuel to the thought that we are living through another golden age for guitar. I'm not a guitar player at all but I really liked hearing you breakdown Derek's guitar licks. As just a TTB fan, it was wonderful to have a technical guitar instructor show me how what it is I'm hearing (and making my own funny faces about every time I see them) is made. Even though I had the privilege of seeing SRV and Clapton and many others I'm glad to have my opinion on Derek reinforced. TTB in concert is a tour de force. Thanks for the video!

I saw Derek play with the ABB in 94...I was 16 so he would've been 15. Started playing when I was six and I would imagine they're probably started around the same time and I was pretty good when I was 16 I had spent 10 years playing 8 to 12 hours a day in my bedroom but he was leagues above me with that slide. It really inspired me to learn to play slide guitar and now at 44 I'm still not a quarter as good using a slide as he is. I would argue in my opinion that he surpasses the Wayne and Warren with ease.

Totally nailed it man, best Derek Trucks lesson I have ever seen. I haven't yet found a slide lesson demonstrating the different slide positions along the neck (like how there are multiple positions for the pentatonic scale) like Derek does, and like you did in this video at the 30 second mark. Have you ever thought of doing an in depth lesson on the different open E slide positions? I feel confined to the small slide box that is so common but I want to be able to move as freely between many positions on the neck as I can with pentatonic stuff in standard tuning and like you did in this video. Maybe you could help demonstrate a few positions for slide playing that aren't just that same normal slide box that everyone knows and starts out playing to help build a better "bag of tricks" for open E slide. Thanks for the great content!

There's so much to Derek Truck's slide that goes beyond the idea of single string finesse. His phrasing, attack, vibrato and a sort of mico-tonal treatment of the notes makes his playing style highly original. I am guessing here, but he sounds just as influenced by gospel singing as he does by the slide players who have come before him.
@STSGuitar165 жыл бұрын
That's what makes him so unique and so good. He sings with the guitar unlike anyone ever.

@Sasketchejuana_man5 жыл бұрын
This works out for Derek well because it’s unique to him, and doing those single line phrases in open tuning gets those great harmonics in there with the note. Also now when you decide to do too many single string licks on slide, you automatically sound like him. Making it so much harder to steal licks like you would from any other player. All this aside from actually trying to learn to have that great intonation he has , the dynamics that I think he and Eric Krasno may be the very best at, just everything that makes him great. I watched DTB play a 17 minute “my favorite things” in an old converted church turned to a theatre in charlotte NC. It was a religious experience.

Very good video! I have been obsessed with playing Derek Trucks style slide guitar ever since I saw him live like 8 years ago now. A couple things that you didn't touch on were his letting the string tone kid of die off as he plays, usually only plucking the string once per phrase, and his slow fade ins with the volume knob. But those are more advanced techniques, and could be used for a secondary video. The beauty of Derek Trucks' playing was best put by John Mayer. He has the ability to turn his guitar into an old jazz singer. Great video, again. This will really help people find fun, new ways to play slide guitar. We need more of it.
