Children should not be exploited on tv for any reason. These people just want $$, with no concern of repercussions for the children.

this is why I have such a problem with children not having any protection on reality tv. They don't have contracts in some states and are not required to abide by labor laws

I as a nurse support being who you want to be. I had a patient at the time 10, born with both genitals. The parents didn’t decide to remove either even though DNA showed the gender. They decided to let her grow up and see what way He -She leaned. They provided both genders cloths & toys. Even though the child was choosing colors like pink, dolls to play with they told me when she was an adult at 18 then The child could-would have surgery to remove the generals he -she did not identify with. I do believe surgery to change genders shouldn’t be made until post 18. I’ve read many stories about adults who have regretted the chance. Those that feel the child mind should be more developed are not attacking ppl changing gender they are concerned for the burden placed on a child mind that lasts forever

I don’t blame him for feeling like Jazz transitioned too early. My husband and I have had a lot of conversations about how we would be extremely cautious with our kids if they came to us and said they were trans. Dressing one way and growing or cutting your hair is one thing but hormone blockers.... hormone replacement... that leaves that child an infertile adult, forever! Look up I de-transitioned... it happens! He shouldn’t have used Jazz to talk about that though and honestly there is a way to voice concerns without calling people out and I hate that he misgendered her. It shows how uneducated he is on the subject.

It’s a big choice because of what you mention. Plus the medications can have side effects. There is also not any data about long term risks because it’s happening as they go. There is data showing a lot of benefits but it would be a very complicated choice

Jacky Brown His point was it was the network doing this to & basically encouraging it &at the least exploring & exploiting children by blasting parents putting chemicals hormones in their body before their brain is even developed. I don't think he was negative towards him & he made a point to say he had nothing bad to say about as a person & child. It was a terrible decision on the network &the parents. BUT his point &comments (&I agree) was on the network doing this damaging many. Honestly, even if it's 1 kid who see this turn or any other irresponsible &harming decisions made to kids, 1 is still too many. We've all seen TLC hurt these kids, not just this fmly. Everything said is all okay w/ that aspect until it's a subject that someone doesn't agree with. It's just not right to judge his or any ones words only bc of the subject. If it's okay& accepted to advocate for 1 child,it should be acceptable to advocate for all of them. It's so hard watching these parents inject life changing health aspects to these kids who can't possibly be 100% until their brain is fully developed& they have life experience, maturity etc. These things cannot be reversed. It's honestly so sad in America or the World that they are even allowed to do this. Respectfully.

Hormone blockers do not leave a child infertile what so ever all it does is put a pause on puberty so they have more time to grow up and make the right decision. It is possible to come off the the blockers and go through puberty naturally

As a medical professional I dont know how it became acceptable to give hormone therapy to a child. I dont care about your beliefs, this is a medical ethics issue that needs addressing immediately before it goes on any longer. It used to be near impossible to get a child hormones unless under strict guidance & circumstances. It's still banned by many practices to allow a woman under 21 to get a breast augmentation without parental consent. But a 13 year old decides they want to be a different gender & suddenly we pump them full of hormones & at 18 we change their body? Sorry, I know I'll receive negative responses but it shouldnt be allowed until you are in your 20s after thorough mental evaluation. Jazz's parents should be ashamed and her doctors reviewed. The drinking age wasnt set at 21 just as a random number, it has to do with brain & body development.

You are so very right about the medical & ethics issues. And what is really important to consider is how different each kid is. A 13 year old "deciding" they are a different gender is definitely a red flag. But another red flag worth investigating is a child that has been telling everyone that they are a different gender since they were a toddler while the parents wait for their child to grow out of that "phase." SweetnLo, huge kudos to your professional community for navigating this crazy time and staying on the front lines keeping people healthy while risking their own safety in the process.

@Gretchen Murray thats not true, no doctor will willingly sterilize an 18 year old male or female without an urgent medical nessesity(like cancer) bottom surgery is sterilization...also Jazzes doctors did exploit her...she should NOT have been given that surgery, they even said that others have had complications from it and that she didnt have enough tissue but then went ahead and did it anyway just because Jazz( at 17 or 18) didnt want to do the other option they presented. She now has had 3 or 4 surgeries because of complications that could have been avioded if they refused the surgery and only offered the alternative. There are transwomen whom are far older who still refuse bottom surgery because of the cons and complications that may arise. At 18, your critical thinking and impulse control still isnt all there..at that age you want what you want and dont consider the bad that may come from it, thats why there are still procedures that simply are not perfomed on an 18 year old despite them being the age of majority. Also therapy has always been a standard of treating gender dysphoria..they need to make sure you fully understand and want to transition and it isnt because of underlying truama. In that regaurd even people in thier middles ages arent given horomones easily. A doctors oath is to do no harm, sometimes that includes not doing something that may causw mental or phsyical harm in the future despite what the patient wants.

What I don’t like is that she’s been used by her parents. This young woman was out to the world as a preschooler. Then mom and dad chased fame for her. Along the way, exposing her to so much hate and scrutiny by the world. She is so intelligent, but yet still so controlled by her parents. Her mom basically strong armed her into picking Harvard despite Jazz not wanting it. She’s now had 3-4 surgeries and doctors admitted they screwed up. She got blockers so young there wasn’t enough tissue. It’s just a lot if you think about it. The ethical questions are very valid as there is still not a lot of data and the kids are guinea pigs for the doctors

I disagree with them allowing Jazz to take hormones. I saw an interview years ago, when Jazz was preschool age, with her mother saying that he wanted to be a girl. I find it unethical to give a child hormones for such a life altering choice. I also do not believe that someone disagreeing with Jazz is hateful. You can disagree with transgender surgeries without hating the person. I agree with Derick Dillard....it was wrong to put Jazz's situation on television and his parents making a profit off of it.

My 24 year old transgender son is still weeding through all the therapy required for gender reassignment surgery. It's beyond me how easily it was made to a child. My son and I both agree, that as long as the child isn't at risk for harm in delaying, it's probably a good choice to wait. The hormone therapy can cause permanent damages and side effects and the surgery is a permanent altercation of someone's body. The one thing that we can do is always respect someone's gender pronouns. I hope Derek considers making that change in the future, but other than that I agree with him (with the exception I mentioned).

Gigi Woodlawn I agree! If one of my kids was transgender I would absolutely support them. But would not allow them to take hormones or have surgery until they were 18. Teens have enough hormones. Adding others can’t be good. And I definitely would not allow them on tv. The online bullying and exploiting would cause additional mental health issues. I would 💯 use the proper pronouns and support them dressing for they gender they identify as. But no hormones or surgery until they can consent as an adult.

I would support my kids and fight for their rights at school. I would use the pronouns they prefer and let them express their identity. However, I would wait on hormone blockers so they could plan their fertility. Also, the transition surgery is more difficult for male to female without certain organs being developed. I am pro lgbtq but this is medically sensitive. Slow down! We will love you through the whole journey...no matter how long it takes.

I am absolutely with Derrick on TLC. They have a lot to answer for. Think about Toddlers and Tiaras - totally no regard for these children. They are all about the almighty dollar. As for Jazz Jennings, she has found transition very difficult not only emotionally, but also medically. It certainly is not a decision to be made lightly and she is suffering for the decisions her parents and doctors made when she was quite young as they have had huge repercussions on her physical health.

I feel like everything Derick said, including about Jazz (minus pronoun) is acceptable esp now that we know what TLC did to Jon Gosselin and how they aided Kate in sending Collin away. He is absolutely correct about the way the brain develops and all of that stuff and while Jazz may fully identify as female it is exploitive and we have no clue if there was any financial pressure placed on the family. We also have ZERO insight as to whether Jazz is making a penny or if the contract is with her parents further exploiting her. Our sexuality, even as a straight person, is very private and is not the business of the world. This is something that should have been between Jazz and her parents given her age, her doctors and then any partners she has in life. This isn't even normal exploiting of a child, it is sexual exploitation which makes it 100x worse. Many people struggle with the correct pronouns when referring to people and if Derick didn't mean it in a malicious way then I can even understand his confusing things. Inappropriate and deserving of an apology along with an intent to learn would be great regardless, but that is between Jazz and Derick and may have already happened. Now, if we still continue to see that from Derick he would lose some points as far as whether or not he truly supports the LGBTQI community or not!

Katie, I appreciate you being open minded and clarifying Derek's tweet about Jazz. I agree with you that Derek should not have mis gendered her. And I agree with Derek about TLC exploiting Jazz and other children. I support the LGBTQ community, but there are MANY people like me who question allowing a child to transition. Do an internet search, and even a youtube search, titled 'i regret transitioning' and hundreds of stories will pop up. Most of these stories are from people who transitioned as miners. We need to do a better job of protecting children. Also, there is a lot of evidence showing that gender dysphoria is real, and adults should be able to transition if they believe it is the right decision for them.

I know a woman who is in her 20's now. When she was 15 one of her teachers encouraged her to "explore her sexuality" the teacher took the 15 yo girl and a group of teens to a gay and lesbian support group for teenagers. She encouraged the kids to lie to their parents by saying they were going to the sweet shop. All of the parents said it was ok so they went to the sweet shop after the support group. That poor girl became depressed and told another adult what had happened instead of going to her parents. The teacher was fired as a result, but that girl had a very hard time coping for a long time. It was hard for her to figure out what she wanted in a relationship and really struggled for a while. Children should not be given hormone treatments or gender surgeries. They should be adults before they are allowed to make such life altering decisions. If I acted on some of the thoughts I had as a teenager I certainly wouldn't be where I am now.

Interesting that his explanation was couched in protecting children, while simultaneously taking a harmful stance toward Jazz, even simply by misgendering her or calling her out on social media. It brought upon more harm to Jazz. It’s unacceptable that a child should have to deal with the ramifications of his actions and we should all take a hard look at this explanation. Sorry, but this response from Derick doesn't change anything, or absolve him. If he had only criticized TLC for taking advantage of Jazz, that would be one thing. But there is no justification for him referring to Jazz as "he" other than to show his disregard for Jazz's feelings, and transgender in general. And his statement about transgender being a myth, had nothing to do with TLC, either. Those things were purely Derick needing to publicly criticize Jazz and the transgender community. Derick also hurt Jazz by accusing her parents of using her for $$$. He had no proof to make those accusations. Derick should stop judging people, and let God do that.

I admit, I have some questions about allowing children to ‘transition’ when they are so young. Let me say that this isn’t (& I won’t debate it if anyone comments solely to be inflammatory) to say I don’t believe there aren’t transgender people-I am suggesting that the sheer amount of hormones given at increasingly younger ages to stop puberty should be somewhat concerning. If our brains don’t fully develop until age 25, logically speaking, there must be some kind of change to a person (long term effects unknown) if they begin younger & younger. For every good doctor or even those with noble intentions, it’s largely a human science experiment on children. I don’t want to compare it to plastic surgery alone because while it could be argued both are elective, there is a difference (to me.) I’ve no doubt it’s difficult on families from a number of angles. I don’t watch & haven’t seen Jazz’s show so I don’t have even a bit of knowledge with which to form a specific opinion. My biggest fear from the outside is long term effect. I am probably sensitive to that specifically as a friend who was transgender passed away several years back. No drugs or alcohol. No known problems. It wasn’t a suicide. He just went to sleep & didn’t wake up. Everything came back as being ‘normal.’ He’d transitioned, hormones & surgeries, though the surgery had been done earlier & wasn’t related. I understand how it can seem like a miracle to some; I do. I also believe we should be cautious in terms of just how far we let children go in decisions that may be confused simply by parents who are aiming to do the ‘right ‘ thing. How to determine that, I can’t say. I do believe it’s something that should be able to be discussed without automatically assuming it’s transphobia talking. Adding a tv show in to the mix does (in my opinion) shed light while simultaneously creating other potential problems that aren’t necessarily considered until after the fact. I always hope people in general are able to learn & discuss & agree to disagree if necessary, but I’ll always go in to it with an open mind because you never know who may pose a question that will make you think, even if it doesn’t change your fundamental beliefs or mind.

I agree with Deric. We need to be mindful that children are vulnerable. They are dea.ing with hormones, emotions and confusion. We all need to be comfortable with in our own skin. I am a complete different person today then I was during puberty. Time and experience guide us along our path. Protecting your child from making a decision that completely changes them physically, is a great responsibility.

I dont agree with how he misgendered her or how he undermined who jazz is as if she doesn't know. I have also struggled with whether it's ok to let a child make the choice to have major surgery. I wonder if tlc has picked up the tab for jazz's medical expenses when they refused to help with Jill's? I wonder if JB intercepted payment for their birth special? I never caught more than a couple episodes of jazz so I dont know any specifics about her story. But i agree that tlc doesn't give a crap about kids. If his only concern was TLC he could have said that in his original statements. But he didn’t. He insisted that Jazz’s family was taking advantage of her. Without any evidence he made it seem like she was in an abusive household. If his only concern was TLC he wouldn’t have felt the need to repeatedly misgender Jazz. He would have just used the correct pronouns. I don’t know why after so much time has passed he’s finally getting around to clarifying his message.

I agree with Derrick that children are not capable of making such a huge decision like whether or not to transition. I think that these children should be put on hormone blockers to prevent puberty until they are 18 and can make the decision to go on HRT and/or get surgeries.

When I was young, I was a huge tomboy, I would wish that I would wake up and be a boy instead of a girl. I dreaded puberty and the changes that came with it and when I saw my body as it developed, I felt it was disconnected from my head as my body was too feminine. I had short hair and dressed as a boy too..and would perfer when people mistook me for one. It wasnt until I was 14 that I started feeling more ok with being a girl and by 17 I was 100% happy as a woman ans started enjoying mote typically feminine things as well. My family didnt know what trans was, they just thought I was going to be a lesbian(Im straight so even that you cant tell just based on how someone acts)..what scares me is that I know that it took puberty to make me feel like a woman and be happy about being one..and so if that influx of horomones is haulted, there will be children like me, who could have grown into their gender and lived normally without having to go through surgery or unnessary horomones or sterilization and been happy..yet they may not have that and end up transitioning and sterilizing themselves. Or that they would later realize after tranition that it actually didnt make them happy and it wasnt what they needed which also happens to some who choose to transition due to truama. My thing is, the changes that occure during puberty arent just in the body but also in the brain and those changes could sway the person into being comfortable in their own bodies without needing to change.

vianjelos exactly, gender is fluid and doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I think the issue is with misgendering in this case, but these choices are something that needs to be discussed with the persons doctor and made in sound mind as an adult as long as there isn’t going to be detrimental effects to that persons quality of life.

I agree with Derick’s PR answer but I don’t believe for a second that he didn’t have a problem with Jazz herself. There’s a reason he continues to refer to Jazz as HIM. And it’s also funny how he thinks children are too young and not developed enough to make these decisions but he has no problem with parents forcing Christianity down their children’s throat whether they want to or not. He has a problem with Jazz’s parent making that decision in accordance to Jazz’s wishes but has no problem with parents being allowed to deny their kids an education or choice in the name of Jesus. He also doesn’t seem to have a problem with parent denying their kids medical treatments for religious beliefs. You should read about Mariah Walton and what her parent did to her. I also have never seen him have a problem with conversion therapy especially for teenagers. His kids and the vast majority of evangelical kids are bombarded from the moment they are born with the constant venom that they will go to hell if they don’t except Jesus and repent. I think it was Jinger that apparently went to her parent at 14 crying and saying she wanted to give her life to Jesus. He had no problem being in a show that exploited kids because it was in the name of Jesus.

That’s too bad to hear that it’s scripted, but not surprising. The opening is like 10 minutes.

Derrick I hope you happen to see this. I'm not alone in believing you're on a spiritual journey, growing more each day. While dealing with situations most of us can never understand. A lot of support you! Even some who are so liberal and dare I say not even Christian but believe in God. You don't need to belong to any one set of beliefs. People do believe you. People understand your journey and Jill's is still unfolding. Let your heart guide you! We're not all bad people. We're sinners just like you trying to make our way in this world. Apologize to Jazz for yourself and herself, privately. As she ages she may understand. No one wants to be judged. Assuming you neither. Let's create a place of judgement free people. We will embrace you. We just want to know that yourself and Jill don't look down on us all. We all want the same in life, for the most part. Keep growing and evolving - however Jesus deems that fit for you both at this time.

@JeaneaneP despite what you believe or not... he has been a j*rk in his reactions and that is not how God has made him but that was his own choice. I personally am not a Christian, but I think everyone should just tell their opinion in a respectful way. So having said that... therefore I think an excuse would be in place. He has the right to his opinion ofcourse, but there is no need to be disrespectful in my opinion.

I would like to his his answer to mis-gendering Jazz. I'm with you. I'm kinda on the fence about how to feel about his explanation. While i agree with him, I don't agree with his views on transgender people and the way he worded his statement against TLC. Just my 2 cents. You look pretty as always Katie!
