Thank you dr Ellis for this video. I had been using tretinoid for 25 years. It was really successfull now, I am 70 my skin became more sensitve ans for 2 years I used retinol which is good . I used the Neutrogena for 2 years and now I just change for the new pure retinol serum 0,2 from l'Oréal. I am french and I must tell you that I am very happy with the result!!! It's a light émulsion very confortable serum. Hope your little Theo is fine. You look great. Have a lovely day😍❤🌹

Hello! I just subscribed to your channel and pretty much caught myself up over the last week or so haha. I so appreciate having this perspective in addition to my dermatology appointments. I know dermatologists are busy and mine is really excellent in spending time with me and talking through my skin concerns and treatment options but even still, her time is very precious in the office as is yours. This channel feels like "bonus" dermatology office time where I get to learn about the various aspects of skincare that I likely won't get the chance to cover with my derm during appointments. Also, I was just diagnosed with rosacea so hearing a dermatologist speak from that perspective is really helpful and comforting. I have a few new treatments that I'm easing into over the next weeks and months and I'm oh so hopeful and excited. Thank you for starting this channel. I am getting a PhD in STEM and it's so important to me to have evidence-based perspectives where I can get them and you're it! Best to you :)

I’m a baby retinol user, I tried to use it multiple times before but always quit due to irritation and flakiness. My dermatologist suggested the alpharet overnight cream by skinbetter and my skin has tolerated it very well. Only downside is the price, $135 for a 1 ounce product.

Hi Dr. Ellis, would you please, please do a video on anti-aging for people who truly can’t tolerate retinoids? I used to use tretinoin successfully for years but when my rosacea hit 2 years ago, I stopped being able to tolerate any retinoids at all (and can’t tolerate AHAs or L-aa). My derm wants me to just chill and keep up with my good sunscreen habits, which I’m doing (I’m a bona fide sunscreen lover), but I want to do more and there isn’t any great info out there about how to get those anti-aging benefits when you can’t use the tried and true actives

As I begin to tolerate a higher retinol %, is it possible to progress to adding in (layering) one of the serums you mentioned (with a slightly higher retinol %) along 🎉WITH the milder Olay or Neutrogena retinol moisturizers? Wondering if that's an ok way to bump up my retinol tolerance over time...Thanks for your help!

I stumbled across your u tube Chanel a couple of weeks ago.. I live in Australia. Im 47 and ive always had amazing skin up until 6 months ago. I have rosacea and hate it. I didn’t know what it was at first but through research I figured it out. I had my eye lash tint done at my local beauty spa in June and the beautician confirmed to me that it was rosacea. I went back later that night and had a wonderful hydration facial then she got me on the Medik8 skin range. It has helped with my rosacea a lot .. I LOVE THE C TETRA SERUM. I love my Medik8 skincare routine.. It’s helped with my rosacea but I still get those annoying flare ups with bumps and I’m currently looking into natural remedies and herbs to help before I go to a dermatologist. Wish you were here in Aussie.. love your Chanel

Do you know of ANY “fungal” acne safe retinoids other than Differin? (No oils, fats, esters, etc. in the formula) Differin irritates my skin so badly with even one use it’s unbelievable! If I can’t find one, I did find a safe azaleic acid In could try. I have seen 4 dermatologists, and have been told it’s rosacea, hypersensitivity, and “fungal” acne, but have a hard time using ANYTHING. It’s been so difficult- especially since I went to school for esthetics and LOVE skin care. I refuse to just age gracefully, lol. Love your videos - thanks for all the info!

Curious what you recommend as maximum tretinoin strength for anti aging purposes. I know for acne higher concentration may yield better results but not sure if that is true for anti aging. Thanks for the recommendations and video! I use various retinols on my neck and décolletage because I can’t tolerate tretinoin in those areas. Right now Sunday Riley retinol.

All your videos are great!! Informative, reliable and right to the point. Huge fan here. Thanks to you I’ve started my tretinoin journey 3 month, I’m in my mid 50s. Always took good care of my facial skin but due to menopause I’m starting to see baby jowls, sagging cheeks. In addition to tretinoin 0.5 I’m using every night, I’ve just started incorporating the Timeless Matrixyl Synthe’6 serum 2xday recommanded in another of your videos. Question : what kind of realistic results and after how many months can I expect seeing any lifting benefits by using these 2 products, if any? I’m currently doing some research on the SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum and the Obagi Medical ELASTIderm Facial Serum and would be very interested to know what you think about them before splurging!!! I do not mind the sky high price tag I just want results. Many thanks for your valuable feedbacks Dr. Ellis. Michelle😉

Thank you for the sweet feedback! To be completely honest, I wouldn’t expect much “lift” from any skincare product, but rather an improvement in skin texture and tone. The skin will look more even, less dull, and more supple with use of products that stimulate collagen, but visible and significant tightening of the skin usually requires in-office procedures. Hope this helps!

I started with the NEUTROGENA version. I saw good results right away, but I couldn’t use it on my neck. Since this is pretty much a lifelong commitment, I decided I wanted better control over the moisturizer and how much retinol is in the product, so I switched to FAB’s retinol cream, 0.25%. I still have to use the sandwich method when applying it, but now at least I can also use it on my neck. Thanks again, Dr Ellis❣️

Hi Dr. Sam: This is a bit off topic, but I'm hoping you can lead me in the right direction. My son had suffered from acne vulgaris since age 16. He is now 26 and recently went on his 4th regime of accutane. He went to see a lady in skin clinic and she put him on Dr. obage skin care. One was the daily power defense moisturizer and the second was their gentle cleanser and exfoliating cleanser. He loves these products but he is going into debt purchasing them as they are so expensive. Could you recommend products that would be similar in composition, but are not so expensive. He is cutrently on trifarotene at night and a zone in the morning and really needs a good moisturizer and cleanser. Thank you for your time.

My english is not very good but i'll try it: 1- If you are using other actives in your routine (like glicolic acid for example) stop using for a while. 2- Try to repair your skin barrier not using retinol for a while (few days or 1-2 weeks depending how your skin is feeling), use only moisturizer and/or seruns with ingredientes that helps repair the skin barrier, like produts with panthenol for example, or cica, etc. I like cicaplast by la roche-posay, but there are many others. Even aquaphor, vaseline helps too. 3- Start to introduce retinol to your skin again slowly. Use once a week for 2-4 weeks, then if no irritation happens twice a week for 2-4 weeks, then 3 etc. The days you're not using retinol use moisturizers that helps build the skin barrier like mentioned before. Most important about retinol is consistence, it's better to use only 2 times per week for many years than use it everyday and get irritation. 4- When applying retinol, apply a moisturizer first, wait 20-30 min to dry it, and then apply retinol wait a few min and finish with another layer of moisturizer. Use a simple moisturizer with no strong actives. (Niacinamide can help the usage of retinol too, but don't use it in high concentration, use with 3-5% max. There are some moisturizers with niacinamide). 5- Use a gentle cleanser with low ph (with similar ph to the skin) without actives in it (like salicilic acid for example) 6- Don't forget your sunscreen 7- If irritation persists, consult a doctor. Hope it helps
