So glad to hear this…stress reduction and protecting sleep is so important. Huberman Lab has a “sleep toolkit” that helps anchor circadian rhythm. 4-5 fruits/veggies a day is goal.

I've recently heard that diversity of the microbiome occurs in people with skin disorders like acne, rosacea, eczema etc.

Please could you make a video on how to balance your skin microbiome when you have developed skin disorders such as seborrheic dermatitis (malassezia + staph overgrowth) and rosacea (Demodex overgrowth)?

Such a great question. I will work on some video content surrounding this, but just wanted to give you some info to start with here: prebiotics and postbiotics are really important when it comes to rebalancing the skin microbiome. Live probiotics in skincare is not as important, nor as practical in terms of formulations. I'm working on something for the New Year that will dive into this more deeply, so check out my instagram channel for that link @drwhitneybowe which should go live the first week of Jan!

Just recently found this channel, love the material! Not sure if you’ve talked about this already in a video, trying to find a solid tinted moisturizer with SPF for my wife, she has the same skin tone as you. Thanks!

Has she tried the Colorescience line? They really do an excellent job of skin tone matching!

Hi, I stumbled across your video after studying seborrheic dermatitis for about 6 years. Really struggling with it. Now this is really interesting and I’d love for you to weigh in. I had a horrible diet my whole life, even from youth to now at 28. Ate fast food at least once a day, then one day around 21 got persistent facial seborrheic dermatitis which will never go into remission. As I’ve studied gut health, I’ve wondered if that is the cause of my skin issues and if it’s usually the cause in most peoples skin issues aside from acne or cancer. I’ve also heard the etiology of seb derm can be Parkinson’s. Thyroid, gallbladder, hormones, etc. I do not think skin conditions are actually related to the skin, yet something that is coming from inside always but that is just my opinion. I’m pretty active, just always thought you could out work a bad diet.

I've had atopic dermatitis my whole life. I'm 25 years old. I discovered that my gut is the main reason for my skin issues, when my gut is irritated and inflamed from eating certain foods (wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, sugar), it has a direct effect on my skin: causing flare ups, itchiness, dryness and general discomfort. I find that when I stay away from those irritating foods, my skin is calm and cool and less aggravated. Working out may help to keep your weight down when eating a lot of fast food, but it doesn't change the content of the food, if the food is irritating to your gut, it can cause inflammation and bloating in your gut which will ythen cause inflammation of the skin.

@@Kaykay-jh1zu how did you figure out it was gut? Have you been to naturopath or TCM for it? Abe you been able to cure it? Do you think you will be able to?

Hi Dr Bowe. Thanks so much for your thoughts on this subject. Am super interested in hearing more. One question: I'm looking for a soap that is bug friendly. I'm using Mother Dirt now but wondering what you think of that product or any others you might recommend. Also, are essential oils based soaps harmful to skin bugs? I've seen conflicting info on that. Also interested in your thoughts on the skin's microbiome part in the immune system. I've read the skin bugs play an important part in defense. Thank you!

I LOVE these questions! In terms of products that support your microbiome, I have a good number of them shared here: shopmyshelf.us/collections/6769. Mother Dirt is completely on point - that's a great choice. These are others that I use myself and recommend to my patients. Please note that I do make a small commision if you purchase directly from here, so you absolutely do not have to do that. You can purchase them anywhere if you chose to do so!
