The first couple of times I listened to this song, I didn't "get" its magic. I didn't listen. Like with many things in life, things pass by you and you don't notice how beautiful it is because you are not paying attention. But I went back again and again, attentively listening from beginning to end over and over, and the song opened up more and more. I started not just hearing the words and sounds but listening to them, letting it sink deep in. It's a song of life. It's an adventure. It's a story. The progress in this song is so rare, how he starts out so quiet, almost talking. Building up until almost screaming at the top of his lungs. The power in this song is out of this world. Power is not how strong you are, but how you can go from fragile and powerless to regaining strength. This song is like regaining your power. This song is special, it's a treasure. I did a cover of this (female version), it'll never be in Dermot Kennedys league, but I couldn't not play and sing this song myself, I couldn't just let it pass by me. The things we treasure most in life we will keep close.

When love was found I kept my hope just like I'd hoped to Then sang to the sea for feelings deep blue And coming down And we've had problems that we've grown through But I bet you dream of what you could do At seventeen, I was alright Was like nothing I could feel inside And wishing you were here tonight is like holding on But I still get to see your face, right? And that's like nothing they can take, right? So there won't be no feeling in the firelight Hoping this'll be right Time to show your worth, child I remember when her heart broke over stubborn shit That's no way to be living kid The angel of death is ruthless And I'm always thinking summertime with the bikes out Pushing our luck, getting wiped out Days with nothing but laughing loud Underneath my coat, won't you tap my shoulder, hold my hand Nights with nothing but dark in there You could be my armor then Island smiles and cardigans The nights that we've been drinking in We're here to help you kill all of this hurt that you've been harboring Confessions should be better planned Alone, that night, I'm surely damned Run away,. I'll understand What's important is this evening I will not forget Purple, blue, orange, red These colors of feeling, give me love, I'll put my heart in it And I think about it all the time Lights went out, you were fine You kinda struggle not to shine I still love you, though I still love you, though I still love you always So hold me when I'm home, keep the evenings long Crack and break and part ways I still love you, though I still love you, though I still love you always So hold me when I'm home, keep the evenings long Let's not crack and break and part ways And I wonder if I could let her down It's for real, it's for real It's for real, it's for real

I feel he lost his ways after he got commercially big. This raw feeling got lost after 2018, and it feels like he got pushed hard by producers and record companies to become something he's not. I saw a show in 2017 in a small venue when both him and his band just glowed with pure happiness and joy, it was one of the best shows I've ever been to, so pure, real and honest. I then saw him two times more after that, and the spark just got weaker and weaker, and at the last show I attended, I even left before he played the last song as I realized that the Dermot I once liked so much have changed into something else. I do wish him the best, and are forever grateful for the early songs he brought us.
