Never underestimate how much the "local kid does good" hometown hero thing means to the fans. Chicago is a great fan city and we put up with a lot of garbage. The Cubs being losers for over a century, the Bears not understanding what a quarterback is or what they do for decades, the Blackhawks in the NHL finals and you had to pay for Comcast Sports to see it, the whole Tim Floyd era, Jay Williams, Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler, just all sorts of stuff that we weathered and still love our guys... and now here is this homegrown kid just laying it all out there. He was like our own in-house Iverson. We love him, unconditionally. Wins, stats, going against Lebron and the Heatles, that's all great and all, but we really didn't have that kind of thing before. I never root for the Knicks, but I definitely did while Rose was there. And I loved seeing him on the Timberwolves. It's so easy to look at it through rose colored glasses (pun intended) and completely overlook any negatives along the way.

Dwights mvp case for that season is a really good one i genuinely believe it shouldve been a 2 man race of dwight vs rose. That team had SO MANY injuries that whole season to really key guys and he single handedly kept them afloat, and he was phenomenal in that years playoffs, the rest of his team played god awful and the way he played in that series was the closest thing to prime shaq we’d ever seen at the time.

I think it’s insane to say that nothing relevant happened for Rose after 2012. He was incredible in the 2015 playoffs next to Jimmy, that team probably gave the LeBron/Kyrie Cavs their stiffest competition in the East

I hate to think about that series. Back to back buzzer beaters in games 3 & 4. Yet we folded. Especially game 6 getting blown out at home. D Rose did play amazing. Butler was the perfect sidekick. Gasols injury was an issue but not an excuse for why we lost.

And knowing he was barely 22 before his knees started to fail him and was already Top 3 in the league tells you just how far he had to go. I would say using the music analogy, Derrick Rose is Jimi Hendrix. Just an explosive few years where he is revered by his peers, revered by those who saw him play, revered by those that never saw him play, doing things that amazed us, just didn't have longevity. Is he a Hall of Famer? I don't know, I would say no because his great years were so few but I'm also not passionately against it. I think I'm like a lot of fans, it's almost not important to me because while his prime wasn't long, it was so much fun to watch that the excitement of those memories are all that really matters.
@JoelCruz-ng4rnАй бұрын
The fact that you brought up Lebron shows you aren’t looking at the MVP objectively either. Lebron finished 3rd, not second. He started the season bragging about a run of 8 titles. And then couldn’t even win best record in the East playing with his superstar friends. Teams with PG’s as the best player have a higher degree of difficulty for success. Best record and 3 wins shy of the Finals is awesome

Wild take if you think LeBron deserved MVP over Rose that year. That was year one of LeBron's villain arc and he had Wade and Bosh as teammates. Rose led a borderline playoff team from a year before to the #1 seed in the entire league. Also, and I don't think I'm exaggerating here, he was the only shot creator on the entire team. He drove 100% of the offense when he was on the floor. The starting #2 was Bogans - a 3&D guy role player. The backup PG was CJ Watson - a shaky ball handler at best for that position. Korver, Brewer, Deng, Boozer, Noah, Asik... none of these guys were creators. Rose was a one man wrecking crew who carried a team like Iverson did in 2001, probably more so tbh. Oh, and Rose and the Bulls swept the superteam Heat every game of that regular season. (Sadly, the ECF was a different story but MVP is a regular season award).

Derrick Rose's value couldn't be measured at Basketball Reference because there's no metric for boosting the confidence of your team. There's no metric for "a nominal player is twice as good just by proximity to this guy." It's something you had to see as it was happening. Boozer and Noah had just a little more swagger than before or after. Deng looked just a little more confident. These were guys who were missing games, too. When Taj Gibson walked out onto the court, he looked like a world conqueror. That's why Rose was MVP. Trade him for a run of the mill star and those guys would have a face like "ah shit, I hope the media isn't watching this game too close."
@alperyldrm6385Ай бұрын
Rose deserved that MVP but they gave it to him mostly because Bron's move to Miami was hugely unpopular at the time and they don't do three-peats on MVP's. Last guy who won three in a row was Larry Bird in the mid 80's.
@tmac731Ай бұрын
D Rose is the reason why Tyrese and Anthony Edwards have the money they do now because of the Rose rule for nba contracts. His MVP season alone is the reason why he should make HOF, also if you look at the PG position, they were pass first(CP3, Deron Williams, Kidd and Nash) after Rose we have Lillard Kyrie and Curry who are score first PGs
@acrobatmappingАй бұрын
He should have mentioned how the MVP race has changed. It used to always be best player on best team...hence Steve Nash winning 2 MVP's despite Shaq being the the best. Same thing. Now says analytics comes in as the primary factor with more of just a requirement to be in the top group of teams.

Probably third on my what if power rankings behind 1. What if Walton played for a team that gave a shit about its players instead of running them into the ground and 2. What if Sabonis had come to the NBA in 1988 instead of 1996 once his knees were gone. So another Portland what if. I'll still never forget that epic first round series DRose had vs Boston, some of the most exciting basketball I have ever watched. Feel like we got robbed because Rose would have brought a title or two to Chicago.
@jamesmarshall6619Ай бұрын
I'm sure if we went through other teams histories we could find a lot of big time what ifs but it does feel like the Trailblazers just had more big ones. Walton, Sabonis, Bowie, Oden, Roy, just a collection of some "Holy crap, what could have been!" I don't think Bowie is some all-time great center but if he was healthy maybe he could have been a really good quality center that helps them in their quest for a title.

Pretending that Rose MVP wasnt legit is something I expect a 20 year old to say who wasnt there.
@Mamba219Ай бұрын
Surprised Russillo didn't mention this, but unless the Heat had gone 67-15 that year, there was no way LeBron was sniffing MVP. Everyone except Heat fans despised that Miami team, and the perception was of him and Bosh going to join Wade's team. There was always the retroactively stupid question that year of whether or not LeBron or Wade was the #1 on that team, too.

Here's how Lebron didn't win MVP that first season with the Heat: there was real debate as to who was actually the more important player on the team, Lebron or Wade. In 2024, people can think that's stupid, but that's irrelevant. In 2011, when they were figuring things out and Wade was still in his prime, it was a real question. Rose, on the other hand, was unquestionably the best player and guy who the rest of the team gathered around. It also didn't hurt the Bulls had the number 1 seed over the Heat, who had 2 of the best 4 or 5 players in the league, and 3 of the top 15.

LeBron wasn't going to win MVP that year, he had a stacked team, he had good stats but he wasn't driving the team. D-Rose did everything one would expect a competitor would do and more, with less talent around him, and him playing a bigger role toward winning, and the Bulls actually finishing with a better record than the Heat. Dwight Howard was coming off a stretch of dominant two-way basketball. Yes, voter fatigue and narrative had something to do with it, but the league did as it should - reward the player who did the most for the league.

It sucks he was injured, but maybe he would have held up better if he wasnt eating candy lime a 6 year old and treating his body right...his choices play into his legacy. His heights were amazing, though he probably shouldn't even possess the one MVP he had. Reggie became an all time shooter and closer....Rose was great for a couple years. Walton was an all-time great who won when it mattered most(rewriting history is a slippery slope with no stopping point).....Rose made a playoff team better, and had a stand-out year. Mcgrady or Rose is a toss up....but Mcgrady will likely be listed higher on all time lists because he was more unstoppable for more of his career. Rose was great...for less time than a college education. He will probably make the Hall of fame, but I think it's questionable, and he most definitely isn't as impactful as those you listed....sans Mcgrady. They are neck-n-neck.
