Күн бұрын

DerrMarr Johnson was the player of the year in high school and even had a chance to go straight to the league! After one year at Cincinnati, he left for the NBA. Was it a good move? Depends on how you look at it. Either way, 20 years later, he's a graduate and transitioning into a different life. Although he's lucky to be alive, what stunted his growth?

This really is one of the best series on the web. I wish all young players were required to watch and learn. Two suggestions for future features: my generations Hasheem Thabeet, Yinka Dare. And especially, Chris Heroine Herren. I used to follow him hardcore, then when I was a young news reporter had to cover him when he crashed his car into a Dunkin Donuts. Apparently he's also recently been accused of sexual assault.

Stunned Growth, been waiting on this one. D.Johnson was really nice. I kind of wish he would’ve went high school to the pros. I remember him in Atlanta Hawks with Jason Terry. They played Terry at the 2 guard. As much I liked him, ATL Hawks didn’t know what to do with a young guy like that. Car accident really hurt him. With the roster ATL should’ve let him start from the jump.

I got to see him play against Chris Herren back in the 90s, maybe a tournament or something I don't remember at this point. What I do remember is that it was and still is the best two high school players I've ever seen. New England doesn't produce a ton of big names so it was a big deal. So unfortunate how both of their careers turned tragic so quickly. Only other NBA guy from my neck of the woods was Tom Garrick in the late 80s. His basketball and football jerseys are both retired at my high school. He earned a bit of national fame as a senior, upsetting a heavily favored Missouri team and then Syracuse who had 3 NBA guys and coming off the Final 4 in 87. I say fame because he and his family were heavily featured in the media due to his father, blinded by a landmine in WW2, coming to all of his games and getting the play by play from one of his daughters.

Im proud of this brother for his post career transition. He's also proof why young brothers need to make that leap when it's available. You can ALWAYS go back and get an education like this brother, but you can't always be a NBA lottery pick and you can't predict what can happen with and injury. They gotta get rid of that 1 and done rule and finally create a REAL minor league system like MLB and the NHL.
