I absolutely loved this series. I think it’s great the way Gerry says “she hasn’t gone anywhere” when Erin says she just wants her old friend back, a brilliant message to send to young people. Any comedy that can combine genuine laugh out loud humour with real life, serious situations that can move a viewer and make them think is alright by me

I love how consistent this is with the character's flaws. Claire's known to be a nervous wreck and this was likely a moment that made her feel so confident since she was getting the feeling she'd feel less alone, and Erin's narcissism about making a difference with the school paper could end up being overshadowed by Claire's coming out, it makes sense to me that she'd panic and resort to what she ends up saying, even if she definitely doesn't mean it. Love that with Claire's newfound confidence here, she claps back saying she wouldn't fancy Erin. A lesser writer would have made this overly soppy or sentimental with Erin hugging and embracing Claire, or Claire basically winking at the audience about how homophobia is wrong. Lisa McGee is a genius when it comes to character-driven comedy. This show could be taught in screenwriting classes.

This scene is one of my favourites from the first season, as you can relate to both Clare and Erin, and see both of their viewpoints. Clare has grappled with her sexuality for some time, but is disappointed that Erin doesn't have the reaction that she expected her to have. Meanwhile, Erin is just shocked that the image of someone she's likely known her whole life is suddenly distorted. I agree with Erin's actress when she stated that Erin wasn't being homophobic, but was struggling to put the pieces together, and that she's not nearly as worldly or Liberal as she tries to present to others, like a typical teenager.
@TeaReesa26
@TeaReesa26 2 жыл бұрын
I think Erin is such an accurate portrayal of a typical teenager here. She wants to be progressive and open-minded, but she has so little experience with some things that when she’s faced with the reality rather than just the theory she’s thrown completely off-balance. And she stumbles into some status quo bigotry that she immediately regrets. It’s especially common in teenagers who haven’t had a lot of worldly experiences yet, but I think it happens to us all from time to time. It’s a very humbling scene. And Claire is just perfect. Her typical nervous energy, plus the excitement of being open about who she is, plus the disappointment in her friend.

The writers handled this scene perfectly. It was the 90’s in Northern Ireland, so the general attitude towards LGBTQ people would’ve been apprehensive at best. However, Erin is never blatantly homophobic towards Clare. She’s shocked and lashes out, which is very in-character, and she bashes on Clare because she feels blindsided. Yet she doesn’t actually have it in her to penalize her best friend because she’s a lesbian. Notice that none of Erin’s dialogue suggests that she doesn’t support gay rights--in fact, this whole episode proves that she does. She just wasn’t expecting it to be Clare. The way she instantly regrets her reaction and fiercely supports Clare for the remainder of the show is so perfect. It’s true to the time (not as openly accepting) but also doesn’t dehumanize Erin, who is naturally a hot-headed and emotional person.

Erin says she wants to "boke" (vomit), tells her not to have a crush on her, yells at her to go back in the closet, etc, and you're saying she was never blatantly homophobic??
@myrin265
@myrin265 3 жыл бұрын
@@mollybradley6429 in this specific scene, yes, she’s definitely being homophobic. I’m in no way denying that. I meant *from then on,* in the rest of the episode. She’s full of remorse in the immediate next scene, constantly expressing her regret, and tries to find ways to prove her support to Clare (whilst also being extremely careful about what she says as to not hurt her further). Simultaneously, Clare is recognizing her own self-worth leading up to the point where she forgives Erin. It‘s a turning point for both of their characters’ development going into series 2. Looking back a year later, I can see that it seems like I’m only talking about this one scene, but I was just using it as a kick-off point.

@foreverLu13
@foreverLu13 2 жыл бұрын
@@mollybradley6429 I think ppl confuse being homophobic as such, like a person that would NEVER accept LGTBIQ+ populations rights / humanity (VS) having an homophobic moment/attitude. Psychological research has shown that we all have biases. You can call it the struggle between the subconscious and conscious mind, the system 1 and 2, or implicit vs explicit attitudes/behavior/ideas. But the thing is or subconscious/implicit/emotional brain reacts faster than our conscious/explicit/rational one, especially in stressful or everyday/fast assessments. And prejudice and discrimination are not rational, they are very emotional illogical beliefs that go very deep into our subconscious mind. So, you can be a huge LGTBIQ+ supporter rationally/consciously bc you have learned/worked on deconstructing that prejudice. And YET you can still have implicit/subconscious bias against gay ppl, bc of upbringing or just simply bc your brain caught that from your environment. And when you are faced with a stressful situation these biases come out easier than your rational judgement. Best case to describe this. You are in a dangerous area, and see a person that looks as a stereotype of what a criminal is (gender race class etc biases), and this person is coming your way. You could 'be better' and decide to not let those prejudices tell you what to do. Or you could cross the street and just be sure you are safe. Most ppl will do the second. In this video, Erin is a Catholic girl in the 90s Ireland - very conservative even for women, so imagine ab LGTBIQ rights. Despite that, she has been educated to be better. However, being faced to this shocking surprise that could change one of the most meaningful relationships she has, Well, her biased attitudes won over and made her react poorly. Same as when Claire just wanted to hide she was lesbian, despite she knows her friends are LGTBIQ friendly 🤷🏽‍♀️ Someone who says that they've never been racist, sexist, homophobic etc when there's no society in the world that is not, is just lying to themselves. A good ally knows that we all have failed, but we just have to work to do better and train our implicit bias. After all, is not our fault our societies/context put those prejudices on us, but is our work to confront and fight them back.

I think this show surpasses the Inbetweeners in many ways. The show in its first series had more subtle over arching storylines, more pointnent moments especially the last seen during the talent show. realism (I grew up in northern Ireland during this era, it's very true to life). the jokes in some scenes were beautifully brought together, like the detention scene.

Don’t think it’s right to compare the two because while some may see similarities they were two different beasts. One was a show that was essentially a British version of American Pie that worked because it took all the glamour and hollywoodisms out of teenage sexual courtship and showed the crude realities of awkward teenagers in the late 2000s. This whole show is a love letter to the 90s and isn’t about horny sex mad teenage boys but about working class young women and the quirkiness of their shenanigans. It’s like comparing Lady Bird to Superbad because they both take place in America

For mine this scene is the highlight of the series so far. Yes the writing is brilliant but even if you write the best piece in the world, sub-par actors will make it rubbish. And this scene for me shows the incredible depth of talent in not just Nicola but Saoirse too. The hand movement in "go back in" for instance is done as a defensive move instead of an aggressive one, and I think that's an important part of Erin's character to establish here. The facial expressions are spot on too, you just want to give Clare a hug even though you know its acted, and that acting is not as easy to do as it sounds. These great actors are really on point with the subtleties in this scene which make it more memorable than the ones with simply great writing.

I haven't seen this show but literally every clip I've came across is the most hilarious thing I've ever witnessed, this clip especially is a goldmine!

I don't think erin is homophobic, it's important to keep in mind that this is 20 years ago and Erin goes to a Catholic school and has a Catholic upbringing. I think this reaction is very realistic and portrays erin as a flawed character because we have to remember that they're sheltered teenagers in this show

She's comes out to one of her best friends and this is how she acted... I guess it was a way different time back then but this still happens today which sucks.

I'm a couple years late to the Fandom I see but I had a feeling.🌝 It came when the group met Peter. Everyone turned around and was so mesmerized or whatever. They couldn't even speak because they were taking him all in. Even James😭😂 Except one person. Clare🤗
