One of those rare shows you fall in love with within the first few minutes and yet it just keeps getting better and better!

Amazing characters. Such a perfect tone.

Definitely! The characters are so well-established right away that you can't help but love them.

This show has educated the world so much about Ireland and the Troubles. It’s been so wonderful to see the appreciation of their culture and understanding the nuance. Idk if people look more into the history beyond what the show says, but it’s worth a look. 💙
@watchthiswithjoeandkevin66 ай бұрын
This show and The West Wing have referenced the era so much. We are reading to try and understand it better ourselves (It is absolutely not well-covered in American classrooms).

The nun's name is Sister George Michael and she's maybe my favorite part of the show.

The farther we get into the show, the more we love her. She's so delightfully glum.

The most important thing to know is the difference between Northern Ireland (which is part of the British Empire) and The Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is a separate country and they ARE NOT British (they fought several wars to clarify the point). Derry is in Norther Ireland (UK) on the border with (the Republic of) Ireland. There is a religious element to this divide. NI was largely Protestant, and Ireland was largely Catholic, but as you can guess it’s never as cut and dry as all that.

Thank you! The show handles the messiness of this period so well.

The chaos of the last few minutes of this episode is some of my favourite television of the past 10 years. Everything just goes absolutely crazy at once and it was so much fun.
@watchthiswithjoeandkevin66 ай бұрын
Yes, and every beat of the chaos is laid out and earned for that great payoff.

Love this show. I watched the first episode then pretty much binged the whole thing. It has moments of pure belly-aching comedy, and some small moments of such touching genuine emotion that they bring me to tears. It's fantastic.
@watchthiswithjoeandkevin66 ай бұрын
This show balances the humor and the touching moments so well.

Lots of great musical choices, lots of references to films of the 80’s-90’s, and continual historical references that range from heartbreaking to heartwarming. The writer of the show incorporated her own history when she wrote the show.

The comedy is balanced so well with the darker setting of the conflict. It's great work.

Awwwwwwww hell yes. One of my favorite sitcoms in recent memory. So funny, full of heart and a little time machine for 90s nostalgia. It's a great, too short ride.

At some point J&K started going for my top five of comedy shows(Schitt's Creek, Fleabag, Ted Lasso) and when they started Marvelous Mrs. Maisel I asked myself: "imagine if they did Derry Girls too". Well...

This is a great one. I was the same age as the girls (and James) during this time frame, but in the US. It's a nostalgic watch for me, but with a totally unique perspective. I think you guys will enjoy it.

Yes, we are really gaining an appreciation for the setting.

As someone who grew up in NI and went to a catholic girls school in the mid to late 90s/early noughties, it’s so accurate. The Troubles sort of happens around you, depending on where you grow up but we went through the same teenage bullshit everyone else goes through. It’s just through a slightly different lens because there are some things you can’t ignore and as much as it doesn’t impact you all the time , you’re fully aware of the way the world works for you, as an Irish Catholic in a British Unionist dominated region.

Just watching your intro, it’s a British show…umm well how to explain things without going through the best part of a millennia’s worth of Anglo-Irish history😂.

It is definitely a period of world history that does not receive enough attention in American schools. We are studying up!

I just started to watch and just have to say I've been waiting for this ever since you first announced it! P.S. keep an eye on Orla. She doesn't have as many lines as some of the others but she is always doing something hilarious in the background. They don't draw attention to it so you have to look for it.

The Good Friday Agreement I think ended the Troubles and they just had a 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. I am American (and a Catholic) but I follow an Irish band called Dea Matrona and I know they played at the Good Friday Agreement Anniversary event and I think it was last year. Derry Girls is a great show all the way through.

If you want a really good quality documentary series to educate you on the Troubles, I recommend “Spotlight on the Troubles”. It’s a BBC series, 8 parts from memory and on KZbin. It will give you a firm grounding.
