In this week's video I will be unboxing, swatching, demonstrating and giving my honest opinion on the Derwent Black and White drawing set. This is a unique set of 3 black and white pencils with varying colour undertones.
To demonstrate this pencil set I draw a stunning grey wolf on toned paper.

Hi friends! I've been noticing a lot of comments on my older videos where people tell me to turn off the background music! Thanks for the feedback- the advice was heeded a while back (November 2017-ish, around the time I was able to upgrade my audio quality), so be sure to check out some of my newer videos. 😊

This was a mass comment I put on lots of older videos- audio quality back then was a little inconsistent. It also isn't just the potential loudness of the music compared to narration; turns a lot of people just don't like the background music at all.

I have the same pencils. They are fine. But you are the Amazingly Talented Artist!! I guess you can do a masterpiece with the simplest and the minimum of supplies!

Thank you so much Guru! Your comment means a lot to me :) I definitely believe that a good piece of art is about the artist rather than supplies- I've seen people create beautiful pieces of artwork just from sand! But no doubt, good art supplies makes the process easier- depending on the result you want to achieve of course!

wait... did you go through half the raven black pencil for just this one test and one drawing alone? :O Ok got to the end of the video and no, apparently you did more than just that one drawing and the test haha. Aaaaanywayyy, tnx a lot for the review. was thinking of getting the set, but after this review, I know it's not what I'm looking for and I'd probably be better off with another set, or maybe get highly pigmented white single pencils. or maybe even white charcoal (like the derwent fine art.) So yeah! many thanks!!!

Turns out that paper blending stumps are called "Tortillons" (pronounced more like "torti-yon"). The more you know! I'll call them by the right name from now on ;)
@mkreeder
@mkreeder Жыл бұрын
Just discovered your channel today and I absolutely love it! Now to further complicate matters...there is a difference between tortillions and paper stumps: the former are the rolled sheets of paper with ridges along the tapered end (the other end being nothing) to be used just at the tip for more precise blending, whereas the latter is double-ended and very smooth, made from molded paper pulp, allowing you to angle the stump and blend in broader strokes. I always forget which is which though, and had to look it up to give you the right info. ;)

Nice video! I bought these about 2 months ago, tried them once, didn't like the result. I think it was the paper. I'll have to give them another try with some better paper I think, after seeing what you were able to accomplish. Going to try a tan or gray toned paper I think.
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 7 жыл бұрын
David Rooks Thank for watching and commenting! I definitely think toned paper is the way to go with these pencils, I can imagine it would be tricky to get the level of contrast on white paper. I'd love to hear what you think of them when you try them again :)

it does make sense that they make the pink cool and not warm because in watercolor for example you have a warm and cool Version of the primary colors alziran crimson is a cool red and its very pink it leans more towards blue and a color like cadmium red light is warm and leans toward yellow and orange the same with blue ultramarine is warm and Prussian blue is cool and is more green. Hope that makes sense I was trying to help. :-)
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 7 жыл бұрын
Clariece K I understand that, but it doesn't seem like a very cool red, and the blue doesn't seem like a particularly warm one either- noticeable when it's blended out with white. And sure, there are warm and cool variation of all colours, but I've always been under the assumption that you can divide a basic colour wheel into a cool (green, blue, purple) half and warm half (yellow, orange, red). :)

I totally agree with your review.The whites are cxxp!These are supposed to be Artist quality before they bought out the Pro colours,NO WAY are they Artist quality.They are horrible to use.They feel really cheap and scratchy. This probably why they are always on SALE.I got these so I Could have a few more shades.I should have just stuck to my Polychromos and Drawing.I hope you do a review on the 3 tins of Spectrum colour blends I got a few weeks ago.They supposed to be artist quality to.They are really cxxp! I don't know why I got them because they are not even on open stock!Anyway,great review,totally agree with everything you said,and,fantastic WOLF.

Hi Paul! I actually really like this set of pencils even though they aren't as pigmented as competing brands. I use the whites for detailing over the top of other pencil layers- their relatively weak pigmentation makes them great for more subtle highlights. I bought a new set because I'm burning through them- I like to use them on layers that have been freshly blended out with solvents so that the pigment is a little stronger but blends into the layers underneath. No, not as soft or pigmented as Polychromos, Luminance, Pablos or Derwent Drawing but what makes them different can make them useful in other ways :) As for me doing a review on the Spectrum Noir Colour Blend pencils... I don't know why you'd want me to spend my money on something you think is rubbish? :P I'd be happy to try anything out if somebody else bought it for me though!
@paulvincent2863
@paulvincent2863 6 жыл бұрын
You never know,you might get some sent to you to review?I must admit,they are an improvement on the Spectrum Noir series.These one's I tried haven't been out that long.Don't get me wrong,not all the colours are bad but,they are a lot like Prismacolor for sharpening.The first one I tried ended up being about 6 cm till I got a good point.But,sadly they are not on open stock.I got these for adult colouring so I didn't have to use my Polychromos.So I suppose they are ok for that.By the way,I can't wait to have a go at your Toucan.It's seriously good.I have the reference photo ready.Good remarks about about the black&whites.I never thought about that.See,learnt something already.

It's a really nice thought, but getting free stuff to review from large and established art supply companies is very unlikely. I simply don't have the social media following to entice a large art supply company to spend their advertising budget on me :P There are bigger fish in the pond!

paul vincent I'm not being negative or hard on myself, I'm being realistic. :P Sponsorship and freebies from large & established companies don't get given to people with small channels, because small channels don't have the reach or viewership that a larger channel has. That just makes business sense. :P It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the quality of art or video I put out, it's that it takes a long time to build a channel. (But I'm not kidding myself, I know that there's a long way to go in regards to video quality before I'll be a "large" KZbinr). And sponsorships and "freebies" are a whole can of worms. I have spoken to arty KZbin friends with much larger channels who are in this situation themselves- and it's often not just a case of "here's a free supply, now say *whatever* you want about it". Maybe if I'm lucky, an art supply company that I already use and love will ask me to be an ambassador, but I don't expect that day to come any time soon. I am getting some supplies from Arteza soon (to review or demo), but this is a different case; it's a newly created company with what I assume to be a much larger advertisement budget than what a larger, more well-known and established company has. As such they're reaching out to a much larger group of artists (even ones with smaller channels like me) in order to get their name out and their company off the ground. I won't be getting paid so there aren't any strings attached, but I know it's not going to be as easy being unbiased as I didn't have to pay for the products. This sort of arrangement won't stop me from using or reviewing other products, and won't stop me from giving my honest opinion. That could be hard to say for other long-term financial arrangements with an art supply company. ;)

These look like great pencils! Do you recommend these for semi-realistic work? I'm looking into pencils thst work best with layering as burnishing with softer pencils have left my hands with some pain... Great review and video!
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 7 жыл бұрын
kitsune_xiii Personally I would recommend polychromos to you from the information you've given me, they're only slightly softer than these pencils but the pigment load is better in my opinion. These Derwent Black & white pencils make a great addition to expand your range of colours though! I feel that a black and white polychromos pencil would have given the same results in my drawing... And the benefit to them is that they're available open stock and have a huge range of highly lightfast colours.
@kitse_xiii8334
@kitse_xiii8334 7 жыл бұрын
Claudia Sketches oh ok! Thank you for replying! I was just wondering about the quality of these, since these seem like really good pencils to compliment the Drawing pencils. Maybe I'll just save up for polychromos instead!
@ClaudiaSketches
@ClaudiaSketches 7 жыл бұрын
kitsune_xiii These 6 are good pencils, but if I recall correctly, the rest of the artists/studio line have serious lightfast issues. I have an old set of Studio (which are apparently the same formula as Artists, just a different shaped barrel) and I don't get along with them at all- in fact, they put me off CP work for a while! I got serious hand fatigue because the pencil hardness and relatively low pigmentation for an artist grade pencil- filling large areas and layering is strenuous work. Perhaps the formula has changed since then and maybe they've improved... the tin I have is at least 10 years old! These pencils (Derwent Studio/Artist line in general) are excellent for detailing work but not for coverage in my opinion. I definitely think that the Derwent Drawing pencils are excellent value for money. These... I wouldn't highly recommend unless you were a collector of pencils or were in desperate need for different shades of black.

Claudia Sketches well, I like to draw somewhat small with color pencils (7x10 inches is the max for me). I'm hoping that Derwent will revamp the rest of their pencils like they did with their Graphic line. Also, hand pain did stop me from colored pencils for a bit. But I'm addicted to them. Thank you for giving your opinion on these!

I recommend Canson Mi Teintes, not a coated paper (so different to Pastelmat in that respect), but has a similarly fine texture which accepts quite a few layers but can still obtain smooth results. It's the paper I used in this video- check out the description on each of my videos as I always leave a list of what I've used :)
