Great video. I've been building something similar myself. The one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to give the generated tasks a due date relative to the project deadline. It doesn't seem like relational dates is really a feature yet.

Yeah this is tricky. I've made it possible before but it essentially guides the user through a few more steps after they do this thing in the video. I may expand on that in a future video

Hey man, How did you do that transfer from full camera view, to the cam+screenshare?
@JoshRedd

Hey Tim, it's keyframing in Premiere Pro. I record my face cam and screen separately. The face cam is on top and I use a mask to get it to the shape I want. Keyframing transitions it from normal size, shape, and location over to the final size, shape, and location.

Whoa, I hadn't realized they removed the ability to add default items to a self-referencing filtered linked database view-I need to go back through some old templates now and see if they're borked b/c of it. One thing in that second approach where you're dragging the items-if I'm not mistaken, if you're hosting a database inside of a template vs. displaying a linked view of a database, you're spawning a new database every time you create a new item using that template. I've done that before and ended up with an unwieldy number of spawned databases. Might be ok depending on how frequently it gets used and not a big deal since you're only using that db as a holding tank, but it def created a lot of headaches for me. Thanks for sharing the video!

Good feedback Steve! You can kind of tell I'm working out new behavior live. later in the video, that task DOES pop up related to the template as well as every new project made with it. It's just not showing up in that template view. Strange for sure but it looks like they still act the same so you should be good on your templates. For sure, that's one reason it feels a little clunkier than the button. I would just delete it after I'm done with it.

Looks like you updated your perspectives method slightly in the "slates" area. I like the dropdown being on the left more! Would love an update video (or tweet) on what's been iterated upon!

I've been trying out nav on the right at the same time as perspectives without using databases. There are trade-offs to each. I particularly like nav on right because the actual sidebar doesn't pop out all the time and I see my content first (looking left to right). It also puts nav on the bottom of a mobile page. However, thats just a big preference issue, I've heard 50/50! Which is totally fine. Definitely thinking through content on the next phase of perspectives!

@JoshRedd, I built out specific mobile pages for my most used pages. You could create a page with just your perspectives and databases to maneuver around. This could also be a widget on your phone as well. My mobile pages are also favorites so I can get to them easily. One of my pages for mobile is a quick capture page just using buttons to reduce friction when I need to add a new task, note, idea etc. on the go. Another option is a dropdown table of contents and you can quickly jump to any heading on the page. Just found your channel and really enjoying your content but get a little confused because your terminology is a little different than I’m used to hearing.

Thanks for the ideas and feedback!@@maigallop Ill admit, we're definitely in intermediate territory on this channel. I figure theres enough 101's out there. But I could be better at not assuming that everyone has watched my previous videos and doesn't get all of the lingo. I like the idea of a page of perspectives just for databases to access on mobile. I'm gonna give it a try!

Why don't you use the automation function?
@JoshRedd
@JoshRedd 9 ай бұрын
Yeah that's a good idea and question! It's definitely an option, I think the one piece that would keep me from doing this is that the automation can't be triggered by the template. It can be triggered by new page added in the entire database or new page added in just that view. I'd go for the view one for sure but you'd have to create a view specifically for only the projects using a specific template. Useful for some but not my favorite UI/UX and not sustainable for larger companies. Using my video as an example, you wouldn't be able to use a view that mixed both general projects and lunar soil sample projects. And this compounds if you add more specific project types with their own set of template tasks. You don't want to add template tasks to a project that doesn't need them, essentially. If they added the ability to trigger by the template, then I'm all for it!

We don't need a new perspective. What you need to do is understand what's already known. This video is confusing everyone including yourself. I'm already doing in Notion what you aren't, because I do it in Filemaker Pro and schlepped one over to Notion as a test. I just don't quite understand how Notion works. I believe I need ten transaction templates upon which I can track all todos, tasks, actions, etc. In Filemaker Pro I just pick from one page and everything works perfect.

Maybe start with a simpler notion guide if u want to get into it and understand it better. This was something that I will use, so the video was great for me.

Hey John, I'm sorry you're confused about Notion. I certainly make content aimed at existing Notion users and probably users that are already comfortable with the tool. There are a lot of good resources out there for learning Notion but at the end of the day, all that matters is what works for you so if Filemaker Pro is working, by all means you should use it! No need to solve a problem that doesn't exist for you.
