@DroehnIng that redbook soundtrack was amazing, especially for a game from the mid 90's, i've considered uploading a playthough with the redbook audio because there don't seem to be any with it, nothing like having gunner down or are you descent start playing as you jump into the fray
@pip55285 жыл бұрын
@@oglej Indeed. Most people use MIDI with stock soft synth like Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, which sounds most like SC-55 but is distinctly different, and SC-55 sounds better, even dry. Also, I have seen a few people use Redbook, but only Infinite Abyss/Definitive Collection Redbook, which is nice, but not as expansive as the original release. Nobody has done playthroughs of Descent II with the original 1996 12-track tracklisting that I have seen.

Wouldn't advise it.. That game is just Descent: Underground, which failed horribly even after gaining the $600k from their kickstarter they wasted trying to develop the game. My friend, you and I had a similar childhood LOL. I remember being kind of bummed (initially) back then in the 90s when my Mom and Dad opted for a Mac PowerPC instead of a Windows PC due to the jobs they both had which had them using Apple and Macintosh computers daily in the workplace. I remember the beastly machine came with 32 MB of RAM too, LOL. I remember flipping through the included MacOS Software that came with the computer the very first night we got it home and set up, and included in those endless pages of CD-ROMs was a game I had never played before nor heard of before, called Descent 2. I installed it, started playing it, and was literally blown away at how badass it was. Descent 2 caused a shift in my gaming habits, from casual to full-fledged sweatlord (or gaming god, as my friends and I called it back then). I became addicted to this masterpiece of the FPS genre. Friends of mine would come over during the summer, and WATCH me play this game, hoping to get their own turn on the keyboard and mouse, which they did, well, sometimes. Watching this gameplay brought back so many good memories of my childhood. When I saw your comment about the Mac PowerPC, I was like "Hey another rare PowerPC gamer" and I just had to add my story. We were few in numbers, but we were just as dedicated if not more so than our Windows PC counterparts. Your comment literally made my weekend LOL. Thanks man.

3:29 System 1 - Rock 26:44 System 2 - Water 48:01 System 3 - Lava 1:45:22 System 4 - Ice 2:38:27 System 5 - Gold 3:30:37 System 6 - Emerald 4:07:52 System 7 - Final Boss Best game in the series, I think. I hated the minigun and missile robots of Descent 1 - they usually spelled instant death for me. Descent 2 calmed that down by replacing the minigun robots with gauss cannon robots, and the situations created with any missile shooters allowed more of a response. Descent 3 was just bleh to me. Hee, even in Descent 2, huge bases explode like a moon does in Star Trek 6. 2:40 With my interest in computer graphics and knowing what they could do, I always took notice of how perfectly the ship comes to a stop in relation to the background. I like it when the composition of a scene expresses some technical credence instead of just keeping things moving in an offseting way for a mood.

That was a pleasure to watch. You don't use plasma cannon much. It is better on energy than laser, good damage and faster fire rate (obviously). It is really the most optimal weapon in the game. Flairs are a waste of energy. Better to turn on headlight. Vulcan cannon is useful in lava levels. Laser is good against medium slow moving bots. Helix is a killer on large bots. Same as me on missile use, I always end up with a pile of unused missiles but I hardly ever used fusion cannon. Omega is useful against pesky swarmers. It was really funny when thief actually managed to steal something. Poor bot signed its death warrant. This game was a beast to play online and single player, even on hardest difficulty seemed boring. I remember toying for hours with the last boss before putting out of its misery.
@ellesmerewildwood48583 жыл бұрын
I've beat all four versions but not at this rate. In D1 the the level 7 Boss was the worst of all the Bosses is all the versions, it was bastard to beat ! Highest difficulty I could go was hotshot and it took hours to beat each level and I had to use the guide bot in D2. In D3 the room where the exhaust jets force you back to the floor took a long time to figure out, I think that was level 10. D4 was pretty good too though I was never able to play the game with this level of proficiency. Also played the user designed levels which came on the D1 or D2 disc, can't remember which. Thankfully I beat them all but it took a lot of time and frustration. You sir, are the THE pilot ! My hat is off to you !

These games are awesome. I first heard of Descent when I was 7, and instantly liked the ideas and concept, then immediately thought the sound effects were really cool when I heard them for the first time. I never got much experience with Descent 3, but based on things I've read about it over the years, the response to it seems to be rather mixed. Some people like it, some hate it, and there are even those who can take it or leave it. I have no vision, so playing D1 or 2 on my own was off the table, but I could play with my dad or a buddy of mine. Playing with my friend was always more fun, because my dad would get dizzy and nauseous, then turn into a real jerk, yelling and screaming and cursing at everyone and everything around him, myself included, yet he would keep on going in spite of what it was doing to his eyes and his mood. I can't count how many times he threatened to uninstall/delete the demo versions, or throw the disks of the full versions in the trash. How it worked was I did the shooting of the primary weapon, and the sighted person, either my dad or my friend, would handle all the rest. When I heard the word "fire!" I held down the left control key until I was told I could let go of the key. Over the years, I've occasionally watched Descent 1 and 2 videos on KZbin, just for fond childhood memories. Even though I'll never be able to play this, it's like I'm playing vicariously through whomever is posting the videos. Hell, if I knew someone in my area who had it installed and set up in a way where I could do the shooting, I'd probably play it again... I guess I can't say "play," more like assist lol.

The reason I'd like to update is that the game crashes too often at this moment. Anyone know the solution for this?

So, the retro executables aren't actually patches. You're supposed to throw them into your rebirth directory and use them instead of D1x/D2x-rebirth.exe Hope that helps. ^^

@@Kaizen777 Oops, my bad. I was using wrong terminology here. But yes, this is what I've tried. Even renaming the executables and replacing the original d2x-rebirth.exe (just like oldschool cracks were operated with). This is where I'm getting the error message. Seems nothing is working.

Ok, solved the issue. Just to inform anyone else having the same problem; It seems you need to install the old version of Dxx-Rebirth, namely the 0.58.1. Only then are you able to run these versions 1.3a and 1.4.x3. Too bad this isn't mentioned in the Dxx Rebirth's homepage, so it isn't obvious on the get-go. :/ However, I'm having problems to get my savegames from that previous version working. I wonder if it even is possible to move pilot-data and savegames successfully. I've tried a bunch of things, and failed every time... EDIT: Might have solved it.

Just binged on this cause I remembered the music at each levels. Are you planning on doing D3 even if it was "not that good"?

This is exactly how the Descent games were supposed to be played. Instant DOOM-style action and fast movement with complete 360 degrees freedom on any of the XYZ axis, including rolling and tilting. Back in 1996 graphics cards and the first 3D accelerators on the market were not that powerful as today, so the game ran slower. Nowadays the gameplay looks very smooth and enjoyable at 60 fps in max resolutions!
